Enteromius matthesi is a large African cyprinid described by Poll and Gosse in 1963 from the Congo basin. A member of the genus Clypeobarbus — a small cluster of big-bodied, deep-water riverine barbs endemic to central and western Africa — it belongs to a group of fishes that are rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and remain relatively little known outside ichthyological literature. Like other members of its genus, it is a robust, likely omnivorous fish of large river channels and their tributaries, and almost nothing has been published on its ecology or reproductive biology.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius matthesi was described by Max Poll and Jean-Pierre Gosse in 1963. The parenthetical authority reflects that the species was originally placed in a different genus — earlier African barbs of this broad type were often assigned to Barbus, a large and historically over-broad catch-all for Old World cyprinids. The genus Clypeobarbus, as recognized in the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names), encompasses a small number of large African barb species primarily from the Congo drainage and adjacent West African river systems.

The genus name Clypeobarbus combines the Latin clypeus (shield, in reference to the large, shield-like scales of these fishes) with Barbus, the older barb genus. The species epithet matthesi honours the person to whom Poll and Gosse dedicated the description, following the standard practice of naming newly described species after collectors, naturalists, or scientific contemporaries. Data for this species remain sparse in the primary literature, and no synonyms are listed in the Catalog of Fishes under the current valid combination.

This fish was long listed as Clypeobarbus matthesi; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Enteromius, and the current combination Enteromius matthesi is followed here.

Morphology

Enteromius matthesi shares the generalized body plan of the genus: a large, robust, laterally compressed cyprinid with a relatively high back, large scales, and a subterminal to inferior mouth suited to benthic feeding. The genus as a whole tends toward silvery or brassy coloration, often with darker markings or a dusky lateral stripe, though specific colour details for this species are not well documented in accessible literature.

As a member of a genus of larger African barbs, E. matthesi is considerably more substantial than the small shoaling barbs familiar from the aquarium trade. Precise maximum length data are sparse in the published record. The species carries two pairs of barbels as expected for Clypeobarbus, with the maxillary pair typically more prominent.

Habitat

Enteromius matthesi is associated with the Congo River basin, one of the world's largest and most biodiverse freshwater systems. The Congo and its vast network of tributaries drain much of central Africa, ranging from fast-flowing rocky headwaters in the highlands of the east to large, slow, sediment-laden mainstem channels and seasonally inundated floodplain forests. Large riverine barbs in this system typically occupy the deeper main channels and larger tributary rivers rather than small forest streams.

Water chemistry in the Congo basin varies considerably by locality — from the highly dilute, extremely soft and acidic waters of the upper tributaries draining ancient shield rocks to the slightly harder and more turbid lowland reaches. Seasonal flooding drives a strong annual pulse in water level, temperature, and food availability, which likely shapes the reproductive cycle of resident large barbs. Feeding

Enteromius matthesi is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Like all cyprinids, it neither constructs a nest nor provides any parental care; eggs and larvae are entirely independent once released. In large river systems such as the Congo, broadcast spawning over clean gravel substrates during the seasonal flood pulse is the most probable strategy, with fertilized eggs and hatched larvae drifting into flooded marginal habitats where zooplankton and other food is abundant.

No captive breeding of this species has been reported in the hobby or scientific literature, and it is essentially absent from the aquarium trade. Fecundity, incubation duration, and larval development details are undocumented.

In the aquarium

Enteromius matthesi is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is absent from the trade and is known only from museum specimens and ichthyological surveys. The size attained by members of the genus Clypeobarbus would in any case make most domestic aquaria unsuitable; these are fishes of large rivers rather than community tanks.

For the dedicated specialist or public aquarium with very large facilities, any Clypeobarbus species would require ample swimming space, good filtration, and water conditions broadly reflecting the soft-to-moderately-hard, warm waters of the Congo basin. No husbandry information specific to E. matthesi exists in accessible sources.

Conservation

Enteromius matthesi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; no formal conservation status is available for this species. The Congo River basin, while still one of the least disturbed major river systems in Africa, faces increasing pressure from artisanal and commercial fishing, hydropower development, and land-use change in its catchment. Large-bodied rheophilic fishes are often among the most vulnerable to dam construction, which fragments populations and alters downstream flow regimes.

Given the limited published data on E. matthesi — its precise distribution, population size, and ecological requirements remain poorly documented — any conservation assessment would be highly uncertain. Continued ichthyological survey work in the Congo basin is essential to establish the true range and status of this and many other little-known congolese endemics.
