Labeobarbus nzadinkisi is an African barb described in 2018 by a team of Belgian, Congolese, Kenyan, and German ichthyologists from the Inkisi River basin in the Lower Congo region of the Democratic Republic of Congo — its name comes from Nzadi Inkisi, the Kikongo name of the river. Known from the Inkisi above the Zongo Falls and reaching about 20.5 cm standard length, it belongs to Labeobarbus, the yellowfish and large-barb assemblage widespread across sub-Saharan river systems, and it emerged from an integrative revision of the basin's Labeobarbus that examined the group's striking 'rubberlip' and 'chiselmouth' mouth polymorphism. Data on the species in life remain sparse, as is typical of recently described fishes from Central African watersheds, but its placement links it to a group of powerful, largely herbivorous river barbs that play important ecological roles in large African rivers.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus nzadinkisi was formally described in 2018 by Vreven, Musschoot, Decru, Wamuini Lunkayilakio, Obiero, Cerwenka, and Schliewen in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, in an integrative study of the Labeobarbus of the Inkisi River basin led from the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Tervuren) with Congolese, Kenyan, and German co-authors. The type locality is the Bongolo River at Kinsende village in the Inkisi basin, Lower Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo; the holotype is in Tervuren (MRAC A7-009-P-1180). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records it as a valid species under the genus Labeobarbus.

Labeobarbus is a large, species-rich African genus encompassing the so-called yellowfish of southern Africa and a diverse array of large barbs across the continent's river systems. The genus has undergone considerable revision as molecular and morphological work has clarified species boundaries within what was historically a loosely defined "Barbus" aggregate. Several nominal species long lumped under Barbus or Varicorhinus have been reassigned to Labeobarbus as the genus has been more rigorously circumscribed, and the describing study itself is notable for documenting Labeobarbus-like ('rubberlip') and Varicorhinus-like ('chiselmouth') mouth phenotypes side by side in the Inkisi basin.

The species epithet derives from Nzadi Inkisi, the Kikongo name of the Inkisi River, the basin to which the species is native. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the spelling nzadinkisi, which is followed here (the epithet occasionally appears garbled as 'nzadinkski' in secondary listings).

Morphology

Labeobarbus nzadinkisi reaches about 8.1 in standard length according to FishBase — a moderate size for the genus. The original description provides detailed morphometrics (dozens of measurements and counts), though little of this has yet filtered into accessible secondary sources. The genus Labeobarbus typically encompasses medium to large, robust, deep-bodied cyprinids with a distinctly fleshy, sometimes plicate lower lip characteristic of the group — an adaptation associated with grazing on aufwuchs, algae, and detritus on rocky and sandy substrates in fast-flowing rivers.

Members of the genus frequently reach substantial sizes; species from the Congo basin and its tributaries are often large-bodied fish well suited to strong currents. The coloration in the genus tends toward silvery or brassy flanks, sometimes with a yellow or orange suffusion near the belly and fins, though precise coloration for this species in the wild is unrecorded in the available data. Standard barb characters — a single dorsal fin, paired barbels at the corner of the mouth, a subterminal mouth, and a complete lateral line — are expected.

Habitat

Labeobarbus nzadinkisi is known from the Inkisi River basin, a left-bank tributary system of the lower Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo; the Catalog of Fishes gives its distribution as the Inkisi above the Zongo Falls. The type locality is the Bongolo River at Kinsende village.

Large Labeobarbus in Central and southern Africa are typically associated with the faster, more oxygenated reaches of rivers — riffles, runs, and rocky stretches — where their deep bodies and strong musculature allow them to hold position in current. Water in the Inkisi system is generally warm to moderately warm, with conditions varying seasonally between wet-season spates and dry-season low flows when fish may concentrate in deeper pools. Specific physicochemical data for the precise localities from which L. nzadinkisi was collected are not documented in the available secondary sources.

Feeding

Large Labeobarbus are broadly described as omnivores with a pronounced herbivorous tendency, using their fleshy, sometimes plicate lips to scrape algae and biofilm from rock surfaces and to ingest aquatic vegetation, detritus, and invertebrates from the substrate. This feeding guild — effectively that of a large grazer-browser — places these fish in a functionally important position in river food webs, cropping primary production and processing organic matter.

Some large African barbs are also known to consume fruits, seeds, and terrestrial plant material that fall into the river during high-water periods, acting as seed dispersers in gallery-forest systems. Specific dietary data for L. nzadinkisi have not been published in accessible sources, but given its generic placement, a diet centred on algae, plant material, aquatic invertebrates, and opportunistic consumption of other organic material is the reasonable inference.

Mating

Like all barbs, Labeobarbus nzadinkisi is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific reproductive observations for this species have been published, but the genus follows the standard cyprinid pattern: ripe males pursue and drive gravid females, typically over gravelly or sandy substrate in river channels, sometimes undertaking seasonal movements toward favoured spawning areas as water levels and temperatures shift.

Courting males in large Labeobarbus can develop intensified colouration and may display nuptial tubercles on the snout during the breeding season. There is no pair bond, no territory maintained beyond the brief spawning event, and no parental behaviour of any kind. The eggs, once shed and fertilised, are left entirely to chance — sinking among substrate particles or drifting downstream.

Breeding

Labeobarbus nzadinkisi has not been bred in captivity in any documented account, and no wild reproductive data specific to this species appear in the available literature. The genus at large reproduces as broadcast egg-scatterers, with spawning typically tied to seasonal flooding or temperature shifts that signal the onset of the wet season — a pattern well documented in related southern African yellowfish and large East African Labeobarbus.

Eggs are adhesive or semi-adhesive and are scattered over gravel, sand, or aquatic vegetation. Adults give no parental care whatsoever; eggs and larvae must survive without protection from predators or environmental disturbance. Fecundity in large barbs tends to be high, compensating for the lack of care. In the Inkisi basin, spawning likely tracks the seasonal hydrograph, with peak activity coinciding with rising waters and increased food availability.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus nzadinkisi is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is a recently described species from a lower-Congo tributary system, unknown in the ornamental trade, and almost certainly unavailable outside specialist scientific collecting. At about 8.1 in standard length it is more modest than the largest members of its genus — which frequently reach 11.8–23.6 in or more — but like them it is a riverine fish with no history in captivity.

For hobbyists interested in large African barbs, more established members of the genus from southern Africa — various yellowfish — are occasionally encountered in specialist collections, but these too require very large, well-filtered systems with robust water flow and are not commonly traded. L. nzadinkisi itself should be considered a fish of scientific and conservation interest rather than an aquarium subject.

Conservation

Labeobarbus nzadinkisi has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List as of the writing of this article — a status common to many recently described African fishes that have not yet entered the assessment queue. The species was described in 2018, and formal IUCN evaluation of Central African freshwater fish frequently lags behind description by years or decades due to the large number of taxa involved and the logistical difficulty of surveying remote basins.

The Inkisi basin lies in the comparatively densely settled Lower Congo region and faces ongoing pressures including artisanal fisheries, watershed agriculture, and infrastructure development — the Zongo Falls that bound the species' known range host hydropower installations. For large-bodied riverine barbs — which are typically slow-maturing, long-lived, and highly dependent on the integrity of their river systems — these threats can have disproportionate effects on population viability. Until a dedicated survey establishes the species' range, abundance, and trend, its conservation status remains formally unknown. It is prudent to apply precautionary concern to any narrowly distributed Central African endemic described from limited collecting material.
