Taxonomy & naming

Valenciennes described the species in 1842 in Cuvier and Valenciennes's Histoire naturelle des poissons, from Jakarta. It was first placed in another genus, so the authority is in parentheses. Labiobarbus is in the family Cyprinidae. No widely used English common name is recorded.

Morphology

An elongate, silvery cyprinid with a fleshy lip. FishBase gives a maximum of 12 in SL for males and unsexed fish.

Habitat

FishBase records it from the Mekong, Salween, Chao Phraya and Xe Bangfai basins and from the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, Java and Borneo. It is potamodromous, moving within river systems, and lives from midwater to the bottom in rivers and streams. It enters flooded fields in the wet season.

Feeding

FishBase lists phytoplankton, periphyton, benthic algae, zooplankton, detritus and insect larvae.

Mating

Mating behaviour is not described.

Breeding

Reproduction is not described, and no captive spawning has been documented.

In the aquarium

FishBase gives 75–79 °F and no pH or hardness range. A migratory, 12 in river fish needs a long tank with current and open swimming room, kept in a group, with vegetable foods and algae in the diet.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List category is Least Concern, assessed on 6 April 2020. Specific threats are not described.

Where it has been recorded

80 georeferenced records (GBIF). Each point is a field observation or museum specimen — pan and zoom to explore where this species turns up. The coordinates come straight from GBIF and are often rounded or tied to the nearest town or river landing, so a dot can sit just beside the actual water rather than in it.
