Taxonomy & naming
Mystacoleucus obtusirostris was first described by Achille Valenciennes in 1842 under the original combination Barbus marginatus. The species has since been placed in the genus Mystacoleucus, which belongs to the subfamily Leuciscinae (family Cyprinidae). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid combination as Mystacoleucus obtusirostris (Valenciennes, 1842), the parenthetical authority reflecting the transfer out of Barbus — the old catch-all genus that once contained an enormous fraction of Old World minnows and barbs before modern revisions disaggregated it.
The genus Mystacoleucus takes its name from the Greek mystax (moustache or upper lip) and leukos (white), a reference to whitish features around the lip or barbels that characterise these fishes. Mystacoleucus is a small genus of medium-sized Southeast Asian cyprinids with a distribution that spans Indochina, Myanmar and Sundaland. The species has sometimes appeared in older aquarium and fisheries literature under the Barbus combination; it should not be confused with the many unrelated barbs that were once bundled into that genus.
This fish was long listed as Mystacoleucus marginatus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats that name as a synonym of Mystacoleucus obtusirostris, the valid name followed here.
Morphology
Mystacoleucus obtusirostris is a moderately large barb, reported to reach 7.9 in in total length (TL) by FishBase, with a common length around 3.9 in SL. A field study on a North Sumatran river population recorded maximum standard lengths of approximately 6.38 in SL in wild-caught specimens, consistent with the species attaining the larger end of that range in good habitat. The body is elongate and laterally compressed in typical barb fashion, giving it the streamlined profile of a fish adapted to moving water.
The fin complement and pigmentation pattern follow the cyprinid norm for the group. The species has the barbels implied by its genus name. Precise colour details from wild specimens vary with condition and locality, as is common among widespread Southeast Asian cyprinids, but the fish is generally silvery with darker margin pigmentation on the scales — an appearance consistent with its specific epithet marginatus (margined, edged).
Habitat
Mystacoleucus obtusirostris inhabits rivers and streams across a broad range of Southeast Asia, encompassing the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Meklong basins on the mainland, the Malay Peninsula, and Borneo, Sumatra and Java in Sundaland, as well as Myanmar. FishBase records it from rivers and streams with sand or pea-gravel substrates and clear, moving water — the typical flowing lowland and foothill habitat of a benthopelagic school fish that favours oxygen-rich current over still backwaters.
Water temperatures across this range are broadly tropical, with FishBase citing 72–81 °F. The Baensch Aquarium Atlas notes that Sundaland populations — particularly from peat-swamp and forest-stream localities — may experience softer, more acidic conditions than the mainland populations in the larger Mekong system. The species has been documented alongside a diverse cyprinid community including Danio, Devario, Garra, Neolissochilus and Schistura, confirming its association with well-oxygenated stream habitats supporting a rich fish fauna. It can, however, adapt to impounded and somewhat degraded waters, which partly explains its wide persistence across a heavily modified landscape.
Feeding
Mystacoleucus obtusirostris is an omnivore. In flowing stream habitats it feeds opportunistically on small invertebrates, plant matter, algae and organic detritus, picking food from the substrate and the water column in the manner characteristic of active schooling cyprinids. Its association with sand- and gravel-bottomed reaches and its benthopelagic lifestyle suggest a diet that includes bottom-dwelling invertebrates as well as drifting material.
In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of standard foods — quality flake, small pellets and micropellets suitable for a fish of its adult size, supplemented with live or frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia. Some vegetable matter and algae wafers round out the diet. Like most barbs it is an eager feeder that benefits from variety.
Mating
Mystacoleucus obtusirostris is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the mould of most barbs. No nest is constructed, no territory is held beyond the brief act of courtship, and no parental care follows spawning. The IUCN assessment notes that the species breeds when water levels rise — a pattern typical of seasonal, monsoon-driven spawning in tropical Asian rivers, where rising floodwaters serve as the principal environmental cue.
Courtship follows the barb pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in a brief pressing contact. The eggs are adhesive and settle among plants or onto the substrate, where they are left entirely to their fate. Adults do not guard, clean or attend the spawn.
Breeding
In its native rivers Mystacoleucus obtusirostris spawns seasonally, stimulated by the rise in water level that accompanies the monsoon. This broadcast-spawning strategy — scatter adhesive eggs widely, provide no care, and rely on sheer fecundity — is standard for medium-to-large Asian barbs in flowing-water systems. Eggs settle among substrate materials or fine vegetation and develop without any parental attendance; adults that remain in the vicinity may consume eggs opportunistically.
The species is not commonly bred in home aquaria because of its relatively large adult size, but the general principles applicable to other barbs would apply: conditioning adults on a varied live and frozen diet, providing a separate spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning substrate, using soft and slightly acidic water to simulate the soft-water conditions of at least some of its range, and removing adults promptly after spawning to protect the eggs. Fry would be raised on infusoria and brine shrimp nauplii in the standard fashion for egg-scattering cyprinids.
In the aquarium
Mystacoleucus obtusirostris is an uncommon but occasionally available aquarium fish, better suited to spacious setups than the smaller barbs that dominate the trade. Its adult size of up to 7.9 in TL means it needs a large tank — something in the 200-litre range or more — with good filtration, steady current, and open swimming space. It is a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six to feel secure and display natural behaviour.
Water conditions should reflect its origins in tropical Indochinese and Sundaic streams: 72–81 °F, broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH, and moderate hardness, with clean, well-oxygenated water. A sand or fine-gravel substrate suits it well. It is peaceful with robust tankmates of a similar size but will likely outcompete very small fish at feeding time. Its tolerance of impounded and somewhat degraded conditions gives it a degree of adaptability in the aquarium, though clean, well-filtered water will always bring out its best.
Conservation
Mystacoleucus obtusirostris is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment completed on 28 March 2011 (published 2012; assessor Chavalit Vidthayanon). The species is described as very common and widely distributed across Southeast Asia, with a stable population and no evidence of major range-wide decline. Its habitat spans permanent rivers and freshwater wetlands from Myanmar and Indochina to Sundaland, a large and diverse range that insulates it from the kind of single-basin vulnerability that threatens many narrowly endemic freshwater fishes.
The species is also noted as potentially tolerant of impounded waters and even somewhat degraded stream conditions, which increases its resilience in a landscape undergoing rapid hydrological change — dam construction, irrigation abstraction and agricultural runoff are widespread stressors across its range. While there is no immediate conservation concern for this species, the broader freshwater biodiversity of Southeast Asia faces severe long-term pressure, and maintaining clean, flowing stream habitats across Indochina and Sundaland remains essential for the diverse cyprinid community with which this species co-occurs.
