Taxonomy & naming
Osteochilus pentalineatus was described by Maurice Kottelat in 1982. The type locality is about 31–62 mi north of Sampit, Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia. The Catalog of Fishes gives Osteochilus pentalineatus Kottelat, 1982 as valid in Cyprinidae.
Morphology
A small Osteochilus. FishBase gives a maximum of 2 in SL for males or unsexed fish. The epithet refers to five lines on the body.
Habitat
FishBase gives the range as southern Borneo and classes the fish as benthopelagic and tropical. Water chemistry for this fish is not recorded.
Feeding
Diet is not recorded in the FishBase entry. Other Osteochilus species graze on algae, biofilm and detritus with their fleshy lips.
Mating
Courtship and spawning behaviour are not recorded in the FishBase entry.
Breeding
Fecundity, egg type and spawning season are not recorded in the FishBase entry.
In the aquarium
Small enough for a modest tank. FishBase gives no temperature, pH or hardness range for it, and the atlas does not set one. Soft, slightly acidic tropical water with cover is a reasonable match to Bornean streams generally. Keep a group and offer algae and vegetable foods alongside small invertebrates.
Conservation
FishBase lists the species as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, assessed 20 April 2020.
