Taxonomy & naming

Paracrossochilus vittatus was described by Boulenger in 1894 as Crossochilus vittatus. The Catalog of Fishes spells the genus Paracrossochilus, and stores use the variant spelling Paracrossocheilus. The Catalog of Fishes gives no type locality for this species. FishBase records Borneo as its range.

Morphology

A slim, bottom-hugging stream fish. FishBase gives a maximum of 3 in SL for males or unsexed fish. The epithet refers to the stripe along the body.

Habitat

FishBase records the species from Borneo, in fast-flowing clear waters over a stony or gravelly bottom. It classes the fish as demersal and tropical.

Feeding

Diet is not recorded in the FishBase entry. Related stream cyprinids with a broad mouth rasp algae and biofilm from stones.

Mating

Courtship and spawning behaviour are not recorded in the FishBase entry.

Breeding

Fecundity, egg type and spawning season are not recorded in the FishBase entry.

In the aquarium

A fish for a stream-style tank with strong current, rocks and cobbles, plenty of oxygen and a group. FishBase gives no temperature, pH or hardness range for it, and the atlas sets none. Stores sell some stock only as 'cf.', so the identity of a given shipment is not settled.

Conservation

FishBase lists the species as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, assessed 22 March 2020.

Where it has been recorded

20 georeferenced records (GBIF). Each point is a field observation or museum specimen — pan and zoom to explore where this species turns up. The coordinates come straight from GBIF and are often rounded or tied to the nearest town or river landing, so a dot can sit just beside the actual water rather than in it.
