Taxonomy & naming
Barbodes sealei was first described by the American ichthyologist Albert William Herre in 1933, based on specimens from Sandakan, British North Borneo (now Sabah, Malaysia). The original combination was Barbodes sealei Herre, 1933, with the name appearing in Herre's checklist of fishes from Sandakan. Subsequent revisions moved the species into Puntius, the broadly defined genus that has long served as a repository for Old World cyprinids of this body plan. The Catalog of Fishes records the current valid combination as Barbodes sealei (Herre, 1933), the parenthetical authority indicating its transfer from Herre's original genus.
The large restructuring of the genus Puntius carried out by Pethiyagoda and colleagues in 2012 split many South Asian and Southeast Asian species out into new genera such as Pethia, Dawkinsia, and Systomus; Puntius itself was retained for a residual set of species. Barbodes sealei was retained in Puntius, where it currently stands under the Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology
Barbodes sealei is a moderately large barb, reaching up to 5.4 in total length according to FishBase, which is considerably larger than most aquarium barbs of the genus. The body is laterally compressed and deep-backed, as typical of the group. The most distinctive feature is a row of four round to oval black spots running along the lateral midline, giving rise to the common name Bornean spotted barb.
The last unbranched dorsal ray is serrated along its posterior edge — a trait shared with several Bornean Puntius and used as a taxonomic character. The overall colouration is silvery with the spots providing high contrast against the flanks. Detailed coloration notes for live individuals are sparse in the literature. Sexual dimorphism has not been well documented in the published record, though as in related egg-scattering barbs females likely become noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid.
Habitat

As a Bornean river species it is best kept in warm, well-oxygenated water with some current, subdued lighting, and a substrate of fine sand or gravel with driftwood to reflect its natural habitat. A group of six or more is recommended, as with most social barbs, to distribute intraspecific chasing and allow natural schooling behaviour. Robust, similarly sized tankmates are appropriate companions. The species is not a regular stock item in the ornamental trade and is likely encountered mainly through specialist breeders or importers with a focus on lesser-known Southeast Asian cyprinids.
