Taxonomy & naming
The species was first described by Francis Day in 1869 as Barbus ambassis, with the type locality recorded as Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, southern India. It was subsequently synonymised with Puntius guganio by Talwar and Jhingran (1991) in their influential checklist of Indian freshwater fishes. Menon (1999) re-elevated it to full species status as Pethia ambassis, the combination that appears in FishBase and that the IUCN used for its 2010 assessment.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the governing authority for valid names) now records the valid combination as Pethia ambassis (Day, 1869) following Kumari et al. (2024), reflecting the broad post-2012 revision of the South Asian barb genera by Pethiyagoda and colleagues that pulled many species out of the old catch-all Puntius into smaller, more natural genera. This article retains the slug and trade-familiar name Pethia ambassis as used in current database records. The genus Pethia groups small, non-banded Indian and Sri Lankan barbs of Smiliogastrinae.
The parenthetical authority (Menon, 1999) marks the specific combination under Puntius; the original authorship for the species as a whole is Day, 1869.

Morphology
FishBase records a maximum total length of 3 in for Pethia ambassis, placing it among the smaller plainland barbs of peninsular India. As a member of the Smiliogastrinae and close kin of the Pethia assemblage, the species would be expected to carry the general body plan of that group: a laterally compressed, relatively deep body, a terminal or slightly subterminal mouth, and the fine-scaled appearance typical of small South Asian cyprinids. A well-planted tank with open water and a small shoal would suit its gregarious plainland barb lifestyle.

Pethia ambassis (as Pethia ambassis) is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated in 2010. The Data Deficient listing reflects an absence of sufficient information on the species' abundance, distribution trends and ecological requirements to make a threat assessment, not necessarily that the species is secure.
Southern peninsular India faces significant freshwater pressures: agricultural water extraction, damming of rivers, pollution from agricultural runoff and urban development, and the seasonal fragmentation of lowland watercourses. A species confined to Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu with questionable records elsewhere occupies a geographically restricted range within a heavily human-modified landscape.
