Taxonomy & naming
Poropuntius clavatus was described by the Scottish surgeon and naturalist John McClelland in 1845, with the original combination recorded as Barbus clavatus McClelland, 1845. The species has subsequently appeared in the literature under Puntius clavatus (McClelland, 1845), reflecting the long practice of housing South Asian barbs in the catch-all genus Puntius, and more recently under Poropuntius clavatus — the name used in the 2010 IUCN assessment. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Poropuntius clavatus (McClelland, 1845), and that placement is followed here.
The genus Systomus was historically applied to large-bodied South Asian barbs, and its boundaries have shifted considerably as molecular and morphological revisions have reorganised the old Puntius complex. The parenthetical authority in the current valid name signals that the species has been moved out of its original genus since McClelland first described it. Given the taxonomic flux in this group, older regional fisheries literature and hobbyist references may still use the synonymous combinations Barbus clavatus or Puntius clavatus.

Morphology
Poropuntius clavatus is a moderately large barb, reaching a recorded maximum of 9.4 in in total length, which places it among the bigger species in its genus. The body is elongated relative to many of the smaller, deep-bodied South Asian barbs, with a body depth measured at roughly 29.5–32.9 percent of standard length. Scale counts from morphological studies give 41–42 scales along the lateral line, 7–8 transverse scale rows above the lateral line, 3–4 below it, and 14–15 predorsal scales — a suite of meristic characters useful in distinguishing it from allied species in the Ganges foothill fauna.
The most conspicuous colour character is the presence of submarginal black stripes on the caudal fin lobes, a marking that provides a useful field character when the fish is encountered in its native streams. Beyond this, detailed colour data from fresh wild specimens are sparse in the published literature, and the species' overall appearance in life has been little photographed.
Habitat
The Stedman barb inhabits streams and rivers in foothill and low-elevation terrain draining the southern slopes of the Himalaya and the ranges of northeast India. Its confirmed range spans the Ganges basin — including tributaries in Assam, Manipur, Sikkim, and West Bengal — and extends into Bangladesh, with additional records attributed to Nepal. The IUCN assessment characterises its habitat as freshwater inland wetlands, specifically running-water environments of streams and rivers rather than still-water bodies.
As a foothill species in the Indo-Gangetic and Brahmaputra drainages, it likely occupies stretches with moderate current, reasonably clear to slightly turbid water, and a substrate of gravel and larger stones typical of montane runoff systems. Water temperatures across the foothills of northeast India are seasonal, with cooler conditions during winter months. Detailed water-chemistry data for this species are not available in the published literature.
Feeding
No detailed dietary studies specific to Poropuntius clavatus have been published, and the species' feeding ecology must be inferred from its benthopelagic habits and its membership in a group of large-bodied South Asian barbs that are broadly omnivorous. Large riverine Systomus typically exploit a range of food sources — benthic invertebrates, plant material, algal films, and detritus — using their terminal or sub-terminal mouths to browse and pick from the substrate and the water column.
The species is noted as of minor commercial fishery importance in its native range, which suggests it is edible and locally significant but not a major target species. In the aquarium, large barbs of this type are best offered a varied diet of good-quality pellets and live or frozen foods, with some vegetable component to reflect the plant matter likely consumed in the wild.
Mating
Like all barbs, Poropuntius clavatus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No courtship or mating behaviour specific to this species has been described in the scientific or hobbyist literature, but the pattern universal to barbs applies: when in spawning condition, a male pursues a gravid female actively through the water column or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, pressing contacts rather than in a structured nest.
There is no pair bond, no territory defended over the season, and no parental investment beyond the spawning act itself. In large river barbs such as this, seasonal hydrological cues — rising water, warming temperatures, or changes in flow associated with monsoon onset — likely trigger reproductive activity, as is typical of riverine cyprinids across the subcontinent.
Breeding
Poropuntius clavatus has not been established in the aquarium hobby and has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions. Its size — up to 9.4 in TL — places it well outside the range of the small community barbs that are standard aquarium subjects, and it is unlikely to be encountered in the trade except occasionally as a wild-caught specimen from its native range.
In the wild, reproduction presumably follows the egg-scattering model universal to barbs: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered over the substrate or among aquatic vegetation during seasonal spawning runs, and the adults provide no care to eggs or larvae. Fry are entirely independent from the moment of hatching. The specifics of clutch size, spawning season, and preferred microhabitat for egg deposition remain unstudied for this species.
In the aquarium
Poropuntius clavatus is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever available in the trade. Its maximum size of 9.4 in makes it unsuitable for typical community aquaria, and it would require a large, well-filtered tank with strong current and good oxygenation to replicate conditions in the foothill streams it inhabits in the wild. There are no established husbandry guidelines, diet data, or compatibility notes for the species in the hobbyist literature.
Anyone who does encounter a specimen — likely a wild-caught import from northeastern India or Bangladesh — would be advised to provide a spacious tank with neutral to slightly alkaline water, moderate hardness consistent with foothill river conditions, and a diet of meaty foods and vegetable matter. The species' conservation status (Near Threatened) and rarity mean that sourcing it from responsible, legal channels is essential.
Conservation
Poropuntius clavatus is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 20 March 2010. The justification notes that the species is rare and seldom recorded in surveys, with a population trend listed as unknown. The primary threats identified by the assessment are mining and quarrying operations in its foothill habitat, destructive fishing practices including blast fishing, logging, and deforestation that destabilises stream banks and increases silt loads, and the damming of foothill rivers that fragments populations and alters flow regimes.
The combination of a restricted range — essentially the foothills of the Ganges and Brahmaputra drainages in northeast India and Bangladesh — with low encounter rates in field surveys and multiple active threat categories makes this a species that warrants continued monitoring. It qualifies as Near Threatened rather than a threatened category because the available data do not demonstrate quantified population declines, but the threats are real and ongoing across its geographic footprint.
