Taxonomy & naming

Nichols described the species in 1930 from Hokou in northeastern Kiangsi (Jiangxi), China. The Catalog of Fishes records the original genus as Barbodon, which is why the authority is written with that name in parentheses. It is now placed in Sarcocheilichthys, in the family Gobionidae, the gudgeons. No widely used English common name is recorded.

Morphology

A small, slender gudgeon with fleshy lips, as the genus name indicates. FishBase gives a maximum of 3.5 in SL for males and unsexed fish. Colour is not described in the sources the atlas uses.

Habitat

FishBase describes it as a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of subtropical climate in China. Specific rivers and water parameters are not published beyond the type locality.

Feeding

Diet is not described in the FishBase summary. Gudgeons generally pick small invertebrates from the bottom.

Mating

Mating behaviour is not described.

Breeding

Reproduction is not described, and no captive spawning has been documented.

In the aquarium

FishBase gives no temperature, pH or hardness range and marks the aquarium use as potential. A subtropical gudgeon suits a cool to moderate, well-filtered tank with sand or fine gravel and small live or frozen foods, kept in a group.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List category is Least Concern, assessed on 22 January 2011. Specific threats are not described.

Where it has been recorded

7 georeferenced records (GBIF). Each point is a field observation or museum specimen — pan and zoom to explore where this species turns up. The coordinates come straight from GBIF and are often rounded or tied to the nearest town or river landing, so a dot can sit just beside the actual water rather than in it.
