Taxonomy & naming
Hamilton described the species in 1822 as Cyprinus latius, from the Teesta River in West Bengal. It is now placed in Tariqilabeo, a genus of labeonine cyprinids, with the authority in parentheses. Stores list it as Crossocheilus latius.
Morphology
A slender, grazing fish with a ventral mouth, similar in shape to flying foxes. FishBase gives a maximum of 7 in TL; colour has not been described in the sources the atlas uses.
Habitat
It lives in streams and rivers of the Himalayan foothills, from the Ganges and Brahmaputra drainages. FishBase gives the range as India, with reports from Bangladesh, Myanmar and China, and lists it as potamodromous and tolerant of brackish water. It gives a temperature of 72–81 °F and a pH of at least 8.0.
Feeding
Related labeonine cyprinids graze algae and biofilm from rock. The diet of this species has not been described separately.
Mating
Mating behaviour has not been described.
Breeding
Captive breeding has not been documented.
In the aquarium
A cool to moderate tank, within the 72–81 °F range FishBase gives, with strong flow, high oxygen and hard surfaces to graze suits it, with a group and a tight lid. Care notes come from related species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List category is Least Concern, assessed in 2009. Threats have not been described.
