Taxonomy & naming
Brienomyrus brachyistius belongs to the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — a scattered, deep-time radiation of freshwater fishes found today across South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia, and named for a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against a toothed pad on the roof. The family Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, is the order's exclusively African branch and by far its most species-rich, with roughly 200 species defined as much by their electric organ discharge (EOD) as by their outward appearance. This species was first described by the American ichthyologist Theodore Gill in 1862 as Mormyrus brachyistius; it was later transferred to the genus Brienomyrus, and the parenthetical authority "(Gill, 1862)" records that change of genus. The World Register of Marine Species lists Brienomyrus brachyistius as the currently valid name.
The genus Brienomyrus honours the Belgian biologist and zoologist Paul Louis Philippe Brien (1894–1975); it groups a few dozen small mormyrids across West and Central Africa that are often difficult to separate on looks alone, since many share a similar slender, unpatterned body plan and are more reliably distinguished by their EOD waveform than by eye. The species epithet brachyistius comes from the Greek brachýs, "short", and histíon, a small sail — a reference to the notably short dorsal fin set well back on the body, the fish's most obvious external field mark.
Morphology
Brienomyrus brachyistius has the elongate, laterally compressed build typical of a small mormyrid: a slender body in plain olive-brown to grey, without the bold spotting or banding seen in many other African fishes, and a small, low-set mouth. The dorsal fin is short and set far back near the tail (14–19 soft rays), the feature the species is named for, while the anal fin beneath it is proportionately much longer (25–31 soft rays), running for a good stretch of the belly. Unlike its relative Gnathonemus petersii, it has no elongated, trunk-like chin appendage — the trademark "schnauzenorgan" is a feature of only some mormyrid genera, not the family as a whole.
The defining organ, though, is internal: a specialised electric organ in the slender caudal peduncle that generates a continuous, low-voltage, pulse-type electric field around the fish. FishBase records measurable sexual dimorphism in that discharge's waveform, and mormyrids as a group are noted for having some of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, built around an oversized cerebellum that processes the constant stream of electrosensory information — the basis for their reputation as unusually "intelligent" fish.
FishBase gives a maximum size of about 7.9 in total length for this species; aquarium specimens are typically smaller, commonly in the 3.9–5.9 in range.
Habitat
The species occurs across the coastal river basins of West Africa, from the Gambia River south to the Congo basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, based on FishBase and GBIF occurrence records. It is recorded from both freshwater and brackish, benthopelagic (near-bottom, open-water) habitats — the lower reaches, floodplains and coastal creeks typical of West African lowland drainages.
These are warm, generally soft, tannin-tinted and often turbid waters, with FishBase citing field temperatures around 77–82 °F. Poor underwater visibility of exactly this kind is the environment the electric sense evolved to read: by day the fish shelters among roots, submerged wood and vegetation, becoming active mostly at dusk and after dark, when it forages using electrolocation rather than sight.
Feeding
In the wild, Brienomyrus brachyistius is a carnivore, taking small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — that it locates by electrolocation rather than vision, probing cover and substrate in the dark.
In the aquarium it is a food specialist rather than a generalist: hobby sources describe a diet built on live or frozen foods — bloodworm, blackworm, whiteworm, Daphnia, Tubifex, Cyclops and mosquito larvae — with the fish rarely if ever taking dried or flake food reliably. A keeper needs a dependable ongoing supply of live or frozen fare, offered after lights-out to match its nocturnal habits; this species is not a fish to keep on convenience foods.
Mating
Courtship in this species runs through the electric channel rather than colour or posture. A study of electrical and behavioural courtship displays in the Journal of Experimental Biology found that the EOD waveform and its duration differ between males and females and are used, together with behavioural displays, in mate recognition and courtship.
Beyond that electrical signalling, the finer details of pairing, spawning-site choice and the act of egg-laying itself remain poorly documented for this species, as for most small mormyrids — general mormyrid biology points to seasonal, flood-cued spawning, but the specifics for Brienomyrus brachyistius have not been well studied in the wild or the aquarium.
Breeding
Breeding in Brienomyrus brachyistius is seasonal spawning that is poorly known and rarely, if ever, achieved in captivity. Wild mormyrids are generally thought to spawn in response to seasonal rains and flooding, which would open up new habitat and food for developing fry, but no detailed account of this species' spawning behaviour, nest site, or egg-laying has been published.
Parental care is likewise poorly known; some mormyrids are believed to guard eggs among plants or roots, but there is no confirmed description of that for this species specifically. Aquarists should treat this as an essentially unbred fish in the hobby rather than expect to reproduce it — its supply is collected from the wild, not captive-raised.
In the aquarium
Sold under the trade name baby whale fish, Brienomyrus brachyistius is a nocturnal, secretive fish that wants a tank built around cover rather than open display space: driftwood, root tangles, PVC pipe hides and dim lighting so it has retreats to sit out the day. Hobby guidance suggests a minimum of roughly 30–75 US gallons and water in the soft, slightly acidic to neutral range (around pH 6–7.5) at 75–82 °F, consistent with the dim, tannin-stained West African coastal waters it comes from — this is not a hard, alkaline rift-lake fish.
Two husbandry points follow directly from its biology. First, its diet is non-negotiable: it needs a steady supply of live or frozen invertebrate foods, and a keeper who cannot commit to that should not keep the species. Second, like other mormyrids it can be intolerant of poor water quality and is considered sensitive to some medications, so gentle, copper-free treatment and stable water chemistry matter more than with a typical community fish. Mormyrids can also be aggressive toward their own kind and similarly shaped tankmates in cramped quarters; keep this species either singly or in a properly sized group with generous hiding spots to spread out any aggression, rather than crowding a small tank.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Brienomyrus brachyistius as Least Concern, an assessment FishBase dates to 2019. It is a wide-ranging species across West African coastal basins from the Gambia to the Congo, and it is not currently considered threatened at the species level.
That said, data on many small West African mormyrids remain comparatively sparse, and the coastal rivers it inhabits face the general regional pressures of deforestation, pollution and damming; none of these is documented as driving a decline specific to this species, but the fish's fortunes are tied to the health of the lowland rivers it calls home.
