Taxonomy & naming
Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus was first described by the Austrian-born ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1866 as Mormyrus pauciradiatus, based on a specimen collected from coastal Angola. It sits in the family Mormyridae, Africa's weakly electric elephantfishes, within the order Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, one of the oldest surviving lineages of bony fish, a scattered, deep-time radiation found today on four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) and united by that toothed lingual bone rather than by any shared modern habitat. The Mormyridae are the family's exclusively African branch, and every member is weakly electric — a sense convergent with, but entirely unrelated to, the electric organs of South America's Gymnotiformes knifefishes.
The species' generic placement has shifted repeatedly since Steindachner's original description: it was moved to Marcusenius by George Albert Boulenger in 1898, to Pollimyrus by the Belgian ichthyologist Léon Taverne in 1971, and finally into a genus of its own, Heteromormyrus, which Taverne erected for it in 1972. The parenthetical authority "(Steindachner, 1866)" attached to the name today records that history, signalling the species was first described under a different genus. Heteromormyrus remains monotypic — pauciradiatus is its only species. The genus name combines Greek heteros, "different, other", with Mormyrus, the family's type genus, and can be read as "the divergent mormyrus", a fitting label for a fish that took over a century of reshuffling to find a stable taxonomic home. The species epithet pauciradiatus is built from Latin paucus, "few", and radiatus, "rayed", referring to its reduced number of dorsal and anal fin rays compared with Mormyrus discorhynchus, one of the species it was originally distinguished from.
Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus is among the least-studied fishes in the entire order: known from little more than the original 19th-century holotype and a single additional non-type specimen held in public collections. A 2022 study extracted and sequenced a complete mitochondrial genome from the historic holotype material, confirming its taxonomic placement with modern molecular tools even though almost nothing else about the living fish — its ecology, behaviour or precise range — has been documented since Steindachner's description a century and a half ago.
Morphology
Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus is a small mormyrid, reported to reach only about 3.9 in total length (FishBase) — modest even by the standards of a family whose members rarely grow large. Diagnostic notes from its taxonomic history describe a body that is shorter and deeper, and a head that is deeper, than in the similarly built mormyrids it was originally grouped with and split away from; combined with its reduced dorsal and anal fin-ray count — the character behind the species name pauciradiatus — these proportions are what separate it from Mormyrus discorhynchus and its other former congeners.
As in other Mormyridae, an electric organ near the base of the tail almost certainly produces a weak, pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD), the sense mormyrids use to electrolocate prey and obstacles in dark water and to recognise their own species — though no EOD waveform has ever been recorded for this particular fish, since it has never been captured alive for study or seen in the aquarium trade. Mormyrids as a family are also noted for one of the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, built around an enlarged cerebellum that processes a constant stream of electrosensory input; whether Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus shares this trait to the same degree as its better-studied relatives is presumed rather than demonstrated.
Habitat
The species is known only from Angola, from the Cuanza (Kwanza) River basin — a coastal river system that rises in the central Angolan highlands and drains west to the Atlantic. FishBase lists it as a freshwater, demersal fish, meaning it lives and forages near the riverbed rather than in open water, consistent with the bottom-oriented, dark-water lifestyle typical of the family.
Beyond that basic placement, essentially nothing has been published about its specific habitat — the depth, flow, vegetation or water chemistry of the stretch of the Cuanza it occupies. With only two known specimens in scientific collections and no follow-up field survey, any description of its habitat beyond "a coastal river in Angola" would be guesswork, and this account deliberately stops short of inventing precise conditions.
Feeding
No feeding observations exist for Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus specifically. By extension from its family, it is presumed to be a nocturnal invertebrate forager, using its electric sense to locate insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans hidden in soft sediment after dark — the general Mormyridae pattern documented in far better-known relatives such as the elephantnose Gnathonemus petersii. Whether this species follows that pattern exactly is inference, not observation.
The species has never been kept or fed in captivity, so there is no aquarium feeding record to weigh against the wild picture. This account can describe what is typical of the genus's relatives; it cannot describe what has actually been confirmed for this fish.
Mating
Nothing has been recorded about courtship or spawning behaviour in Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus. In mormyrids generally, the electric organ discharge is thought to carry information used in mate recognition and courtship alongside other cues, but the specific waveform, timing or behavioural role it plays in this species is entirely unknown — no live specimen has ever been observed, let alone studied through a breeding season.
Breeding
As with the great majority of mormyrids, Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus is essentially unbred in captivity — unsurprising for a fish that has never even been recorded in the aquarium trade. Wild mormyrids are generally seasonal, flood-triggered spawners, breeding in step with rains and rising water, and it is reasonable to presume this species follows a broadly similar pattern given its coastal Angolan river habitat, but no direct evidence confirms it for this fish.
Parental care, if any, is unknown. Some mormyrids are thought to scatter or loosely guard eggs among vegetation, but this has not been documented for Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus, and given how few specimens have ever been examined, any breeding account for this species should be read as inference from its relatives rather than established fact.
In the aquarium
Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus has never been recorded in the aquarium hobby. It is not an oddball that occasionally turns up in African fish shipments — so far as the record shows, it is absent from the trade entirely, represented in the world's collections by a 19th-century holotype and a single additional specimen. There is no husbandry record, no captive-care history, and no basis for tank-size, tankmate or water-chemistry recommendations specific to this fish.
If a specimen were ever obtained, the only responsible starting point would be general Mormyridae husbandry: soft, dim, tannin-stained water; a soft sand substrate for foraging; stable, non-fluctuating water chemistry; and equipment positioned away from where the fish forages, since electrical noise from heaters and powerheads can interfere with a mormyrid's electrolocation. Mormyrids as a group are also notably sensitive to medications and to poor water quality. All of this is drawn from the genus's better-known relatives, not from any observation of Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus itself, and should be treated as a starting hypothesis rather than tested guidance.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Heteromormyrus pauciradiatus as Data Deficient, in a 2022 assessment. The reasoning is straightforward: the species is known from only the original holotype and a single additional non-type specimen held in public collections, with no subsequent field survey, population estimate or habitat assessment to support any other category.
That data gap cuts both ways — the species could be perfectly secure, or it could be genuinely rare and exposed to pressures on Angola's coastal rivers, and there is currently no way to tell which. A dedicated survey of the Cuanza basin would be needed before any more meaningful conservation status could be assigned.
