Taxonomy & naming
Hyperopisus bebe was first described by the French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacepède in 1803 as Mormyrus bebe, one of several West African mormyrids he named from specimens and local accounts gathered in the Senegal region during the early years of French naturalist exploration there. It was later transferred to its own genus, Hyperopisus, erected by the American ichthyologist Theodore Gill; Hyperopisus bebe remains the only species placed in that genus today, making it monotypic.
The species sits in the family Mormyridae within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — an ancient, deep-time radiation of fishes found today on four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) and united not by habitat but by a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth. The Mormyridae themselves are an exclusively African family of several hundred weakly electric species, entirely convergent with — not related to — the electric knifefishes of South America (Gymnotiformes); the two groups evolved similar electric senses independently on opposite sides of the Atlantic.
The genus name Hyperopisus is built from classical Greek elements of the kind common in nineteenth-century ichthyological naming, though the precise sense Gill intended for this particular genus is not well documented in the sources consulted here. Hyperopisus bebe reaches a documented maximum of about 20.1 in total length, with sexual maturity reported at roughly 13 in — considerably larger than the small mormyrids that dominate the aquarium trade. The body is elongated and only moderately compressed, and the genus's defining feature is a distinctly elongated, downturned snout, giving the fish a more pike-like profile than the blunt-faced Mormyrops or the trunk-nosed Gnathonemus.
