Stomatorhinus puncticulatus is a small mormyrid described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1899, one of a long series of diminutive Congo basin mormyrids he named around the turn of the twentieth century. Like its congeners it is set apart from better-known relatives such as Gnathonemus by a small, inferior mouth positioned near the tip of a short, unproduced snout rather than an elongated chin barbel, and it carries the weak electric organ near the base of the tail typical of every mormyrid. Taxonomy & naming

Stomatorhinus puncticulatus was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1899, part of a long run of small Central African mormyrids he named around the turn of the twentieth century from museum material assembled during Belgian survey and collecting expeditions into the Congo Free State. It belongs to the family Mormyridae — the elephantnoses and mormyrids — within the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongue fishes, one of the oldest surviving lineages of teleosts, named for a bony, toothed structure on the tongue that bites against toothed plates on the roof of the mouth. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists Stomatorhinus puncticulatus as a currently valid species; the precise type locality is not confirmed in the sources reviewed for this account.

The genus Stomatorhinus was erected by Boulenger in this same period for a distinct group of small, blunt-snouted Congo basin mormyrids, distinguished by a small mouth set low and near the tip of the snout rather than on an elongated chin barbel.
