Taxonomy & naming
"Hemibagrus planiceps" was described by Achille Valenciennes, crediting the earlier field observations of Heinrich Kuhl and Johan Conrad van Hasselt, in 1840, from specimens collected in Java during the Dutch East Indies expeditions of the 1820s. The name has not held up: the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) lists Hemibagrus planiceps as a junior synonym of Hemibagrus planiceps, along with a second synonym, Bagrus flavus. The valid current name for this fish is therefore Hemibagrus planiceps, in the family Bagridae, not the African genus Bagrus.
This is a common trap in older Southeast Asian catfish literature: nineteenth-century authors described many bagrid catfishes under the broad genus Bagrus before the group was later split, and Hemibagrus (erected for a cluster of Asian species with a short-based adipose fin and a distinctive dentition) absorbed a number of these old Bagrus names, including anisurus. Aquarists and databases occasionally still encounter the old combination "Hemibagrus planiceps" in historical records, but the taxonomically correct label for this fish is Hemibagrus planiceps.
This fish was long listed as Bagrus anisurus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats that name as a synonym of Hemibagrus planiceps, the valid name followed here.
Morphology
Hemibagrus planiceps reaches at least 13 in total length according to Catalog of Fishes measurements, with Seriously Fish citing 10.5 in as the largest officially recorded specimen — either way, this is a substantial river catfish, not a small community fish. It has the classic bagrid silhouette: a flattened, broad head (planiceps literally means "flat-headed"), four pairs of barbels, a short-based adipose fin under 20% of standard length, and 47–51 vertebrae. There is no dark midlateral stripe, which helps separate it from some superficially similar Hemibagrus species.
Like other bagrid catfishes it is entirely scaleless, with tough naked skin rather than scales or bony plates. The dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff, serrated spines that lock erect and can jab a keeper's hand or snag in a net — handle this fish in a container, never a net. Males can be distinguished by an elongate genital papilla that reaches all the way to the anal-fin origin, a useful field character in a group where external sexing is otherwise difficult.
Habitat
This species is endemic to a tight cluster of river systems in western Java, Indonesia — the Ciantern, Cidurian, Cikeas, Ciliwung, Cimanuk, Cisokan and Citarum basins. It occupies the upper reaches of these rivers, favouring clear, fast-flowing water over rocky and sandy substrates rather than the sluggish, silty lowland stretches many other Southeast Asian catfishes tolerate.
That narrow endemism to a handful of river systems on one island, combined with the pressures those rivers face from West Java's dense human population, is central to why the species carries a Vulnerable assessment rather than the Least Concern status typical of widespread, generalist river catfish.
Feeding
Hemibagrus planiceps is a predator, taking crustaceans and smaller fishes in the wild — a nocturnal ambush hunter that forages after dark along rocky and sandy river bottoms. As with other large bagrids, gape size rather than appetite sets the limit: anything that fits in its mouth is fair game, including tankmates.
In captivity it should be offered whole or chunked meaty foods — fish, prawn, and large sinking pellets — rather than flake or small community foods. Any fish or invertebrate sharing its water needs to be too large to be swallowed whole, which in practice rules out virtually all typical community stock once this catfish approaches its adult size.
Mating
Detailed observations of courtship and spawning behaviour in Hemibagrus planiceps are not documented in the available literature; data are sparse for this species specifically. Large bagrid catfishes in general spawn in flowing water during seasonal high-water periods, with no sustained pair bond, but nothing precise has been recorded for this species.
Breeding
There is no record of this species being bred in home aquaria, and that is expected for a fish of its size and biology. Large bagrid catfishes of this kind are propagated, when they are propagated at all, through hormone-induced spawning at commercial or research hatcheries rather than by hobbyists — the fish simply outgrows any tank a home aquarist could reasonably provide long before it would reach breeding condition. Treat this as a species that is collected from the wild for the trade, not one to plan a breeding project around.
In the aquarium
This is a size-trap fish in the fullest sense: small imports look like an easy oddball catfish, but Hemibagrus planiceps grows to at least 13 in and needs a correspondingly large, long-term setup — river-tank dimensions with strong water flow and filtration, not a standard community aquarium. Most home tanks cannot house an adult of this species; anyone buying a juvenile should be planning for a very large, dedicated tank or should not buy it at all.
Because it is scaleless, it is medication-sensitive — dose copper-based treatments and many standard medications conservatively, as with loaches and other naked-skinned catfishes. Its dorsal and pectoral spines lock rigid and are serrated, so move it in a net-free container rather than netting it, both to protect the fish and to avoid a jabbed hand. It is a nocturnal predator that wants rocky cover and dim refuges by day, strong current, and only tankmates too large to be eaten. Given the pressures on its native Javan rivers, prospective keepers should ask whether captive-bred stock exists before acquiring wild-collected fish.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses this species, under its valid name Hemibagrus planiceps, as Vulnerable (assessed 2018, criteria B1ab(iii,v)). That reflects its narrow endemic range — a handful of river systems in western Java — and the ongoing habitat pressure across that densely populated part of Indonesia, including sedimentation, pollution and altered flow regimes in its home rivers.
Because the species is restricted to so few river basins, localised threats to any one of them (damming, water extraction, agricultural runoff) carry outsized weight for the species as a whole. There is no indication in the available sources of an established aquarium-trade breeding programme, so wild populations likely still supply any specimens that reach the hobby.
