Taxonomy & naming
Imparfinis nigropunctatus was described in 2026 by Gabriel S. C. Silva, Maridiesse M. Lopes, Kaylane R. Carvalho, Claudio Oliveira and Luisa M. Sarmento-Soares, in Zootaxa (volume 5814, issue 2: 259–275). It was named alongside two other new Imparfinis species from Amazonian drainages of the Brazilian Shield — I. melanopterus, from the middle Araguaia River, and I. tessellatus, from the Papagaio River drainage in the upper Tapajós basin — after the authors combined morphology with a species-delimitation analysis of molecular data and recovered all three colour-based morphotypes as independent lineages showing high genetic divergence, rather than variation within one species.
The species is placed in Imparfinis within the family Heptapteridae, tribe Heptapterini, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Imparfinis nigropunctatus Silva, Lopes, Carvalho, Oliveira & Sarmento-Soares, 2026 as a valid, currently accepted name. The holotype (DZSJRP 3087) and paratypes (held at LBP and MZUSP) come from Alto Araguaia, Goiás, Brazil (17°24'36.0"S, 53°22'26"W), in the upper Araguaia River basin.
Morphology
The describing paper's full morphological description — measurements, fin-ray and vertebral counts, and a formal diagnosis — sits behind Zootaxa's subscription paywall and was not accessible in the sources reviewed here; only the abstract and reference list could be consulted. What the abstract does establish is the species' key diagnostic trait: Imparfinis nigropunctatus carries conspicuous black spots on the body, the character used to separate it from its two new sister species and from other congeners with broadly similar colouration. As general context for the genus, not a measurement of this species: Imparfinis is one of the more species-rich genera in Heptapteridae, and its members are small, elongate, scaleless catfishes with three pairs of barbels, usually told apart from one another by combinations of colour pattern and fin or vertebral counts rather than by size alone.
Habitat
Imparfinis nigropunctatus is known only from its type locality, Alto Araguaia, Goiás, Brazil, in the upper Araguaia River basin of central Brazil — part of the wider Tocantins–Araguaia drainage, which runs north through the Cerrado savanna before reaching the Amazon basin's eastern margin. No further collection sites and no published water-chemistry figures (temperature, pH, or otherwise) are available in the sources reviewed here.
