Ophichthys hodgarti was originally described by the ichthyologist B. L. Chaudhuri in 1913 under the genus Amphipnous, a name that was long used for Asian swamp eels before being folded into Monopterus as a junior synonym. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences — the authority for valid names) records the species as Ophichthys hodgarti (Chaudhuri, 1913), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the original combination in a different genus. The type locality is not explicitly cited in available sources.
Monopterus is the principal genus of the family Synbranchidae, the swamp eels, placed within the order Synbranchiformes alongside the spiny eels (Mastacembelidae). The eel-like body plan shared with true eels (Anguilliformes) is convergent: the two orders are not closely related, and the similarity is a product of independent adaptation to a burrowing, elongate way of life in shallow or subterranean freshwaters. The genus Monopterus is distributed primarily across South and Southeast Asia, with several species introduced elsewhere — most notably Monopterus albus, which has become invasive in parts of North America.

A soft sand substrate allowing burrowing, caves or pipes for shelter, and warm, still water would be appropriate. As with all scaleless or nearly scaleless fish, the species should be assumed sensitive to copper-based medications.
