Rakthamichthys indicus, Eapen's swamp eel, is a minute troglobitic swamp eel endemic to a handful of hand-dug wells in the laterite country around Kottayam in Kerala, south India. It is not a true eel: it belongs to the family Synbranchidae, the swamp eels of the order Synbranchiformes, whose elongate, limbless bodies are a product of convergent evolution with the unrelated true eels of the order Anguilliformes. First collected in 1963 by K. C. Eapen (for whom the species is named) and formally replaced under the name Rakthamichthys indicus by Talwar in 1991, this tiny, sightless, depigmented fish has spent its entire evolutionary history in lightless groundwater voids a full ten metres below the surface — making it one of the most narrowly restricted vertebrates on the subcontinent. A 2020 osteological revision transferred it to the new genus Rakthamichthys, though the Talwar combination remains in wide reference use.

Taxonomy & naming

The fish was first described by K. C. Eapen (1963) under the combination Monopterus indicus — a name already occupied, which required Talwar (1991) to propose the replacement name Rakthamichthys indicus in Eapen's honour. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) has carried it under Rakthamichthys indicus, and that combination underpins most of the distributional and conservation literature.

In 2020 a detailed osteological revision recognised that the Amphipnous group — including the south Indian troglobitic species — differs sufficiently from typical Monopterus to warrant its own genus, and the new name Rakthamichthys was proposed; under this revision, the current valid combination is Rakthamichthys indicus (Eapen). The genus Monopterus itself has long absorbed the synonym Amphipnous, whose species were folded back in on morphological and molecular grounds. Workers citing FishBase or older checklists may still encounter the Rakthamichthys indicus combination, so both names appear in the literature for this animal.

The species sits in Synbranchidae, family of the swamp eels, within the order Synbranchiformes — closer kin to the fire eel and other spiny eels than to any true eel. Its eel-like body is a consequence of adapting to burrowing and moving through narrow substrate voids, not of shared ancestry with the Anguilliformes.

This fish was long listed as Monopterus eapeni; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats that name as a synonym of Rakthamichthys indicus, the valid name followed here.

Morphology

Rakthamichthys indicus is tiny by swamp-eel standards, reaching a maximum recorded total length of 6.3 in. The body is greatly elongate and cylindrical, tapered toward the tail, and entirely lacking external scales — the smooth skin is the first thing that unites it visually with the rest of the family. There are no paired fins; the dorsal, caudal, and anal fins are reduced to a continuous low ridge around the tail tip, as in all synbranchids.

The most conspicuous adaptations are to permanent cave life. The eyes are sunken and covered by skin — functional vision is absent. Body colouration is pale or whitish to pinkish, with little or no pigmentation, reflecting the complete absence of light in the laterite groundwater voids it occupies. The fleshy snout is present but not strongly developed into the proboscis-like organ of the larger, surface-dwelling Monopterus species. The gills are reduced and the fish breathes air through its highly vascularised buccopharyngeal lining, which is the defining physiological trait of the swamp eels as a group.

Habitat

The entire known range of Rakthamichthys indicus is the laterite-rich groundwater system around Kottayam district (approximately 9°30′N, 76°30′E), Kerala, where the species has been collected from hand-dug domestic wells drawing on a water table lying up to ten metres below the surface. The laterite aquifer is a porous, iron-rich rock layer characteristic of the Western Ghats foothills, and the small groundwater voids within it represent the entire available habitat for this fish.

The species co-occurs in the same wells with Horaglanis krishnai, a hypogean catfish, indicating a stable, if extremely limited, subterranean community. Groundwater conditions in laterite wells are typically stable in temperature and chemistry year-round, and notably oxygen-poor — the swamp eel's air-breathing mode is an advantage in this setting. Precise water-quality measurements for the type locality have not been published in the available literature; pH, temperature, and hardness data specific to Rakthamichthys indicus are not documented.

Feeding

The diet of Rakthamichthys indicus in the wild has not been documented. In the absence of published stomach-content or observational data, its diet can only be inferred from what is known of its relatives and its setting. Surface-dwelling Monopterus species are opportunistic predators, taking aquatic invertebrates, small fishes, and organic detritus probed from the substrate.

In a laterite groundwater void with no photosynthetic primary production, prey availability is severely limited. The most likely food sources are groundwater invertebrates — small crustaceans, oligochaete worms, or organic particles washed in from the surface. The fish's reduced eyes and reliance on chemosensory and mechanosensory cues fit this feeding regime. No aquarium husbandry data specific to this species are available.

Mating

Specific mating observations for Rakthamichthys indicus have not been published. The broader Monopterus lineage is protogynous hermaphroditic: individuals are typically born female and undergo a sex change to become male as they mature or as local sex ratios demand. This mode is well-documented for Monopterus albus and several close relatives, and is inferred to apply within this clade generally.

In surface-dwelling Monopterus species, courtship is associated with burrow construction and bubble-nest building at the water's edge or bank margin. Whether the stable, seasonally invariant conditions of a groundwater well alter or abolish the seasonal reproductive cues typical of surface populations is unknown. Data sparse for this taxon specifically.

Breeding

No confirmed breeding observations for Rakthamichthys indicus have been reported in the scientific or hobbyist literature. Extrapolating from Monopterus albus and other well-studied relatives: the male builds and guards a floating bubble-nest of mucus at a bank burrow or shallow margin, deposits eggs into the nest, and tends the eggs and newly hatched larvae — a genuine form of parental care unusual among fishes of this body form.

Whether a groundwater-adapted population retains this behaviour — a bubble-nest requires access to air at a water surface and a burrow with some airspace — is an open question given the wholly subterranean life of this fish. No captive-breeding records exist. Its extreme rarity, restricted distribution, and sensitivity to disturbance make this one of the least-studied synbranchids in the region.

In the aquarium

Rakthamichthys indicus is not, in any practical sense, an aquarium fish. It is an obligate cave dweller that has never been offered in the hobby, cannot be legally collected without scientific permits, and is so narrowly endemic that any collection pressure would constitute a meaningful threat to the species. It is included here for completeness, not as a guide to acquisition.

Any future scientific study that required temporary holding would need to replicate groundwater conditions: constant temperature, very low light to total darkness, high water quality without the aeration typical of aquarium practice (the fish breathes air directly and does not need surface agitation), and a soft substrate with hiding spaces. Like all swamp eels it is an air-breather and would drown in a fully sealed, non-surface-accessible tank, but it equally needs a tight lid as all Synbranchidae are capable of escaping through any gap. Copper-based medications and other treatments known to harm scaleless fishes must be avoided absolutely.

Conservation

Rakthamichthys indicus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (2010 assessment). The DD status reflects the near-total absence of survey data, not an absence of concern: the species is known from a single locality — one small cluster of wells in Kottayam — which under IUCN criteria alone meets the Vulnerable threshold for criterion D2 (restricted area of occupancy at a single location). One unpublished assessment reportedly rated it Critically Endangered, though without stated justification in the available sources.

The threats are straightforward. The laterite aquifer is vulnerable to contamination by agricultural chemicals, domestic waste, and altered groundwater drawdown as well use intensifies across Kerala's densely populated lowlands. Deepening or capping of traditional dug wells, or drilling of bore wells that lower the water table, can eliminate habitat directly. The co-occurring Horaglanis krishnai faces the same pressures. No formal conservation or monitoring programme specific to this well community is documented. A targeted survey to assess population size, current well status, and water-quality trends is an obvious priority for the species.
