Callochromis

Callochromis are the sleek, sand-sifting mouthbrooders of Lake Tanganyika's shallow shorelines — three species of open-bottom cichlid that vacuum mouthfuls of sand and strain the buried invertebrates through their gills, much as a South American Geophagus does. They are small, fast, and endemic to the lake, and they carry one genuinely odd trick: Callochromis macrops is the only Tanganyikan cichlid known to wear true egg-spots on the male's anal fin, a deceptive spawning lure usually associated with Lake Malawi's mbuna rather than the rift's older flock.

Taxonomy & the radiation

Callochromis was erected by Charles Tate Regan in 1920, one of nine Tanganyikan genera he carved out of the lake's then-undifferentiated cichlid fauna in his landmark 1920 revision. He fixed Paratilapia macrops (Boulenger, 1898) as the type species, so the genus is anchored on what is now Callochromis macrops. The name itself is a compound of the Greek kalos/kallos, "beautiful," and chromis, an old word for a perch-like fish — "beautiful chromis," a fair description of breeding males.

Within the family the genus sits in the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae and, more usefully, in the tribe Ectodini (Poll, 1986) — Tanganyika's most morphologically and behaviourally diverse lineage, the radiation that produced the lake's sand- and rock-dwelling "featherfins" and sand-sifters including Xenotilapia, Enantiopus, Ophthalmotilapia, Cyathopharynx and Aulonocranus. Molecular work by Koblmüller, Salzburger & Sturmbauer (2004, Journal of Molecular Evolution) on the Ectodini placed the benthic, sand-dwelling lifestyle as ancestral for the tribe and showed that rocky habitats were colonised independently more than once; Callochromis belongs squarely to that ancestral sand-dwelling core. The genus is small and stable in headcount — three valid species, Callochromis macrops (Boulenger, 1898), Callochromis pleurospilus (Boulenger, 1906) and Callochromis melanostigma (Boulenger, 1906) — a count confirmed by FishBase, IRMNG and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The taxonomy is not entirely settled: melanostigma was long treated as a subspecies of macrops before being raised to full species, and Konings (2019), cited in the species' IUCN assessment, flags that the whole genus "may need revision in the future."

Defining features

Callochromis share the build of an animal that hunts the open sand: a slightly elongate, laterally compressed body, highest at the dorsal-fin origin, with a gently rounded back and a near-straight belly; a low-set, somewhat downturned mouth carrying conical, recurved teeth in outer and inner series; and filamentous pelvic fins. FishBase records 12–14 dorsal spines, 3 anal spines and 30–32 vertebrae for C. pleurospilus, a useful generic signature. The eyes are large — most obviously in C. macrops, whose name means "big-eyed" and whose common-trade name is the "big-eyed mouthbrooder."

Size is modest and a real point of difference among the three: C. pleurospilus tops out around 4 in (4 in) total length, C. macrops at roughly 5.3 in (5.5 in), and the largest, C. melanostigma, at about 5.9 in (6 in). All three are strongly sexually dimorphic — males larger and, in breeding dress, vividly coloured in metallic blues, greens, reds and golds, while females stay a plain, near-silvery brown that helps them disappear over open sand. The closest look-alikes are the other Tanganyikan sand-sifters of the same tribe, Enantiopus and Xenotilapia, and in the trade Callochromis are easily confused with them; the most reliable separator is C. macrops's diagnostic anal-fin egg-spots, which the other sand-sifting genera lack, together with the genus's relatively deeper body and big eye. Several geographic colour morphs exist within each species (the "Goldstreak," "Kigoma" and similar trade forms), which matters less for ID than for the hybridisation risk they create in tanks.

Range & habitat

Every Callochromis is endemic to Lake Tanganyika, the ancient Rift Valley lake shared by Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia and Burundi, and within the lake the three species partition the shoreline almost cleanly. C. macrops is the most widely distributed, found nearly all the way around the lake except the extreme north, while C. melanostigma replaces it in the far north (Nyanza-Lac and the Ubwari peninsula round to Cape Caramba), and C. pleurospilus occupies most of the lake but is absent only from a stretch of the Tanzanian shore between Kipili and the Mahale Mountains. macrops and melanostigma essentially trade places north-to-south — a textbook allopatric pair, which is exactly why melanostigma was once filed as a subspecies of macrops.

The biotope is the defining thing: these are fish of open, shallow sand and silt, typically close to rocks they bolt to for cover, in the littoral zone. The IUCN assessment for C. melanostigma puts the band at roughly 3–33 ft (3–33 ft), and Seriously Fish notes that C. macrops favours quite shallow, sediment-rich water that is murkier than most of the lake, often near beds of Vallisneria and Ceratophyllum. Tanganyika's water is famously hard, alkaline and stable; FishBase lists pH near 7.0–8.5 and temperatures of about 73–82°F (73–82 °F) for the genus, though the lake's open littoral runs warm and clear-chemistried, and keepers target hard, high-pH conditions to match. When alarmed, Callochromis do something few cichlids do — they dive headfirst into the sand and bury themselves to evade predators, a behaviour FishBase records for C. pleurospilus.

Ecology & diet

The genus is built around a single trophic strategy: sand-sifting. Callochromis take in mouthfuls of substrate and strain it through the gill rakers, swallowing the buried invertebrates — small crustaceans, insect larvae, worms — and ejecting the cleaned sand, feeding almost exclusively from the bottom. Seriously Fish draws the apt comparison to South American "eartheaters" such as Geophagus, and the common label "sand sifter" lumps Callochromis with the ecologically convergent Enantiopus and Xenotilapia. FishBase assigns the genus a trophic level around 3.5, the signature of a small benthic invertivore rather than a grazer or piscivore, and the IUCN account adds that C. melanostigma "filters sediment and mud to feed."

That invertivore niche is the tribe's ancestral condition — the Koblmüller et al. (2004) phylogeny reconstructs sand-dwelling benthic feeding as the base state of the Ectodini, from which other members diverged onto rocks and into the water column. Divergence within Callochromis is more about geography and size than diet: all three work the same sandy invertebrate larder, with the larger melanostigma and macrops simply taking a bigger share of the same prey field than the smaller pleurospilus. Ecologically the genus is a mid-littoral processor — turning over and aerating the sand, converting buried invertebrate production into fish biomass, and in turn feeding the lake's larger predators, the role its schooling, sand-diving, predator-wary habits are shaped by.

Behaviour & breeding

In the wild Callochromis are gregarious, forming loose schools or shoals over open sand, but the social peace is conditional: come breeding, males turn sharply territorial. All three species are maternal mouthbrooders, and the genus follows a bower-and-lek system. A male digs a sand nest — in C. macrops a fully grown male maintains a permanent turret-like "bower" that can exceed 12 in (12 in) across and stand nearly as tall — and displays at it to passing females, often with neighbouring males arranged in a lek of adjacent bowers. The female lays in the depression, immediately mouths the eggs, and is then fertilised by the egg-dummy trick: in C. macrops the male folds his anal fin so the orange-red egg-spots stand out in apparent three dimensions, the female tries to gather these "eggs," and the male releases milt that she draws into her mouth. This egg-spot signalling is, as Seriously Fish notes, unique among Lake Tanganyika cichlids and otherwise a Malawi-flock hallmark.

The female alone broods. FishBase records C. macrops females (about 3.5–4 in) carrying eggs and larvae up to 0.5 in before release, and clutches run roughly 25–60 eggs, brooded for about three weeks; fry are large enough to take brine shrimp nauplii at release. The triggers are simple — warmth, condition, a settled colony, and a male in full bower and colour — and dominant males will spawn almost continuously. There is a sobering field footnote here: Konings (2019), via the IUCN assessment of C. melanostigma, suggests that population densities in the north may now be too low for males to establish breeding leks at all, with lekking behaviour in that species no longer observed — a reminder that this is a density-dependent breeding system, not a guaranteed one.

In the aquarium

Callochromis are rewarding but firmly intermediate-to-advanced fish, and the honest pitch starts with the floor plan: this is a genus that needs a long, open, sand-bottomed tank, not a rockscape. Give a deep sand bed of 2–3 in (2–3 in) for bower building, leave most of the floor clear, and provide only modest rock cover at the ends for females to retreat to. Seriously Fish suggests a 48 in / roughly 63-gallon (65 US gal) tank as a working minimum for one male and a harem of three or more females; multiple males need a markedly larger footprint, ideally 72 in (about 71 in) or more so distinct bower territories can form.

The single biggest mistake keepers make is underestimating intraspecific aggression. In nature these fish school in large numbers, but in a tank that crowding evaporates and males become, in the words of one Cichlid Forum keeper, "very aggressive little fish"; a recurring forum pattern is a group bought as juveniles that dwindles to a single survivor as dominance sorts out — exactly what one keeper reported losing a group of eight C. pleurospilus down to one. The fixes are a generous footprint, several females per male, and a single male unless the tank is large. Tankmate logic follows the niche: pair them with fish that use other water layers — open-water Cyprichromis above, robust rock-dwellers like Altolamprologus — and avoid adding other sand-sifters or shell-dwellers that compete for the same floor. Two further hard rules: never mix Callochromis species or distinct geographic colour forms, because they hybridise freely; and cover the tank, as these are nervous, sand-diving fish prone to jumping when startled. Diet should be substrate-delivered and invertebrate-rich — sinking foods, frozen and live brine shrimp and similar — so it reaches the bottom where the fish actually feed. Of the three, C. pleurospilus and C. macrops are the ones that reach the trade and the better starting points; C. melanostigma is rare in the hobby and now a conservation concern in the wild.

Conservation

All three Callochromis are narrow endemics of a single lake, so the genus's fate is tied entirely to Tanganyika. The IUCN picture is mixed rather than alarming: C. macrops and C. pleurospilus were both assessed Least Concern in the 2025 reassessment (12 March 2025), reflecting wide lake-wide ranges, while C. melanostigma was moved from Least Concern (2006) up to Near Threatened (B1b(iii,v), assessed 12 March 2025) — the one species in the genus with a flashing light. Its assessment is specific and worth stating plainly: a northern endemic with an extent of occurrence of just 4,309 mi², a decreasing and continuing-to-decline population, driven by non-selective beach-seine fishing and by sedimentation degrading its shallow sandy habitat, plus some pressure from the aquarium trade. The honest summary is that two of three species are fine on paper while the third, the most range-restricted, is sliding.

Those pressures sit on top of lake-scale stresses that bear on the whole sandy littoral the genus depends on. Climate warming has strengthened stratification and weakened the seasonal mixing that fertilises the lake; O'Reilly et al. (2003, Nature) linked that to an estimated ~20% decline in primary productivity, and Cohen et al. (2016, PNAS) documented roughly a 38% loss of oxygenated benthic habitat as the oxygenated layer contracts — bad news for benthic invertivores. Sedimentation from catchment deforestation, the exact threat named in the melanostigma assessment, smothers the shallow sand and silt these fish work. Layered over this is Tanganyika's huge pelagic clupeid-and-Lates fishery, which feeds four nations and concentrates fishing effort and non-selective gear along the same shores. Governance is coordinated regionally through the Lake Tanganyika Authority under the 2003 Convention. None of this should be overstated for Callochromis as a whole — most of the genus is not currently threatened — but C. melanostigma's slip from LC to NT is a concrete, recent signal that the shallow sandy littoral is under real and increasing strain.
