Mchenga

Mchenga is a small genus of open-water, zooplankton-feeding cichlids endemic to Lake Malawi, split off from the large utaka genus Copadichromis by Jay Stauffer and Ad Konings in 2006. What sets the genus apart is behaviour written into the sand: the males build cone-shaped "bowers" — sculpted spawning castles — on lake-floor leks, and it is the Chichewa word for sand, mchenga, that gives the genus its name. It is a genus defined less by a single jaw or fin character than by how its males court.

Taxonomy & the radiation

Mchenga Stauffer & Konings, 2006 was erected in their monographic "Review of Copadichromis (Teleostei: Cichlidae) with the description of a new genus and six new species" (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 17(1):9–42). The type species is Mchenga cyclicos. The etymology is deliberately behavioural: mchenga is Chichewa, the national language of Malawi, for "sand," chosen to flag the sand bowers the males construct. The gender of the name is feminine.

The genus sits within the haplochromine flock of Lake Malawi (Cichlidae: Pseudocrenilabrinae, tribe Haplochromini), in the so-called "utaka" — the lake's silvery, plankton-grazing midwater haplochromines historically lumped under Copadichromis. When Stauffer & Konings erected Mchenga they transferred six species into it from Copadichromis: M. cyclicos, M. thinos, M. conophoros, M. flavimanus, M. inornatus and M. eucinostomus. Three of these — conophoros, cyclicos and thinos — had been newly described only in 1993, by Stauffer, LoVullo & McKaye (Copeia 1993(4):1017–1027), a paper that explicitly questioned the boundaries of Copadichromis; the 2006 revision acted on that, pulling the bower-building, sand-arena utaka out into Mchenga and a redefined Copadichromis. The other three are much older taxa moved into the new genus: M. eucinostomus (originally described by Regan, 1922), M. flavimanus (Iles, 1960) and M. inornatus (Boulenger, 1908).

All six are currently treated as valid species of Mchenga by the Catalog of Fishes and FishBase. This atlas profiles three in depth — conophoros, cyclicos and thinos, the trio Stauffer's team described and the behavioural core of the genus — which is an editorial scope choice, not a sign that the six-species composition is taxonomically unsettled. The genus is, nonetheless, a young and lightly populated corner of a flock with several hundred members.

Defining features

Mchenga are small, deep-bodied, laterally compressed utaka built for hovering and feeding in open water rather than rasping rock. In the original description (Stauffer, LoVullo & McKaye 1993), holotype standard lengths run from roughly 3 in in M. thinos up to ~4.5 in in M. cyclicos and M. conophoros; FishBase gives maxima of about 4.4 in (4.5 in) SL for conophoros, 4.8 in (5 in) SL for cyclicos, and a notably smaller 3.1 in (3 in) SL for thinos. So even within three species the genus spans a real size range, thinos being the runt.

Meristics are conservative and overlapping: 16–17 dorsal spines, 10–12 dorsal soft rays, 8–10 anal rays, and about 33–34 lateral-line scales across the genus. The mouth is small and the outer jaw teeth of mature males are small and bicuspid — a planktivore's dentition, not a scraper's. The most useful field characters are colour and gill-raker driven. M. thinos carries yellow ocelli (egg-spots) on the anal fin of females and non-breeding males and hyaline juvenile fins, and breeding males lack black caudal markings; M. conophoros and M. cyclicos lack those anal ocelli and breeding males instead show black markings in the caudal fin. Gill-raker counts separate them further — conophoros runs higher (13–16 on the first ceratobranchial) than cyclicos (10–12).

Telling Mchenga from look-alike genera is the hard part. They are silvery midwater haplochromines easily confused in the field with Copadichromis, Nyassachromis and Mylochromis. The practical separators are the cone-shaped sand bowers and the lek behaviour (Stauffer, McKaye & Konings 2002, Fish and Fisheries 3:213–224, argued behaviour is a legitimate diagnostic tool in this flock), plus the combination of bicuspid male jaw teeth and the species-specific egg-spot pattern.

Range & habitat

The genus is endemic to Lake Malawi (Lake Nyasa/Niassa) in the East African Rift, shared by Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. Within the lake the species are widely distributed; M. thinos, for instance, is recorded essentially lake-wide. They are creatures of the sediment–water interface and the open water just above it, not the rocky mbuna zones.

The three species partition by depth and substrate, which is the interesting part of their ecology. Per FishBase and the original description, M. conophoros forages shallowest, over and just off sand beaches, with males building bowers in arenas roughly 10–33 ft (10–33 ft) deep. M. cyclicos sits at a similar shallow band, bowers at about 10–23 ft (10–23 ft) over open sand. M. thinos is the deeper, rock-and-sand-interface specialist, building bowers at the rock/sand boundary down to about 50–82 ft (49–82 ft). So the genus tracks the lake's classic sand-arena and intermediate-zone biotopes.

Lake Malawi's surface water provides the chemistry every keeper inherits: warm (about 75–84 °F / 75–84 °F in the inhabited shallows), hard and alkaline, with pH typically around 7.7–8.6 and conductivity near 210–235 µS/cm. The deeper, permanently stratified water column below roughly 656–820 ft is anoxic, which confines these fish to the productive, oxygenated upper layer where their plankton food lives.

Ecology & diet

Mchenga is built around one trophic job: harvesting zooplankton in the water column. FishBase, following Stauffer, LoVullo & McKaye (1993), describes all three species as foraging in midwater and feeding mainly on zooplankton, and the small mouth, fine bicuspid teeth, and numerous gill rakers are all of a piece with that. Estimated trophic level sits around 3.4 — a secondary consumer skimming copepods and other crustacean plankton, not a predator of fish.

This places Mchenga firmly in the utaka guild, the silvery shoaling planktivores that, together with the deeper-water Diplotaxodon, convert Lake Malawi's offshore plankton production into fish biomass and in turn feed larger piscivores. Functionally the genus overlaps heavily with Copadichromis proper — the genera were split on bower architecture and morphology, not on a sharp dietary divide — so it is best read as one slice of a single planktivorous adaptive theme rather than a distinct feeding innovation.

Divergence among the species is mostly spatial and size-based rather than dietary. They eat the same broad food, but exploit it at different depths and over different substrates (shallow sand for conophoros and cyclicos, the deeper rock/sand interface for the smaller thinos). That fine-grained habitat partitioning, alongside species-specific male courtship colour and bower form, is the kind of axis along which Lake Malawi's sand-dwellers have radiated so explosively (York et al. 2015, Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution 3:18, on the evolution of bower building).

Behaviour & breeding

Like essentially all Lake Malawi haplochromines, Mchenga are maternal mouthbrooders with no pair bond and no biparental care: the female alone incubates the eggs and fry in her buccal cavity for roughly three weeks, the male contributing only genes and a good performance. What makes the genus distinctive is the performance itself.

Males aggregate into breeding arenas (leks) and each constructs a cone-shaped bower of sand — the trait that named the genus. The bower is a courtship sculpture, built and maintained by the male, on which he displays to passing females; bower form and placement are species-specific (cone-shaped sand castles for conophoros and cyclicos in shallow open arenas, and at the rock/sand interface for thinos). Lake Malawi's sand-dwellers have evolved a remarkable diversity of these structures, and the bower is thought to be a target of female choice and an axis of reproductive isolation (York et al. 2015; Stauffer, Kellogg & McKaye 2005, Copeia 2005(3):657–660, on female choice in Malawi cichlids). Stauffer, McKaye & Konings (2002) went so far as to argue that such bower and courtship behaviour is itself a reliable diagnostic character in this flock.

Outside the spawning arena these are shoaling, open-water fish rather than fierce rock-territory holders; aggression is concentrated in breeding males defending a bower against rivals. That lek-and-mouthbrood system, driven by male display rather than substrate guarding, is the genus's behavioural signature.

In the aquarium

Honest first point: Mchenga is a genus you will rarely meet in a shop. None of the three species is a trade staple, and they don't have the fluorescent colour that moves utaka like Copadichromis borleyi ("Kadango"). Aquarium-maintenance data is essentially absent from FishBase for all three. So most of what follows is reasoned from their biology and from general experience with utaka, not from a deep pool of species-specific hobby reports — and that gap is itself the truth of the matter.

If you do get them, treat them as open-water shoaling utaka. That means a long, wide footprint, not a tall one: a 4–6 ft tank of 75–125 gal (75–125 US gal) at minimum, with a deep open sand bed (they are sand-arena spawners — bare bottoms and rock-packed mbuna tanks fight their nature) and plenty of horizontal swimming room. Keep them in groups with several females per male to spread aggression, and target Malawi's hard, alkaline chemistry: pH ~7.8–8.6, temperature ~76–82 °F (75–82 °F). Difficulty is moderate; the fish are not delicate, but they want space and the right substrate.

The classic mistakes are predictable. First, diet: utaka are planktivores, and overfeeding rich, protein-heavy or mammalian foods invites "Malawi bloat," so lean toward smaller, frequent feedings of plankton-type and lower-protein foods. Second, hybridisation: silvery utaka cross readily, and mixing Mchenga with Copadichromis or Nyassachromis of similar appearance risks muddled fry — keep one utaka type per tank if you care about clean lineages. Third, temperament mismatch: these are not mbuna, and housing them with boisterous rock-dwellers stresses open-water fish. They are best regarded as an intermediate-to-advanced subject, not a beginner's first Malawi cichlid — partly because of the care, mostly because of availability.

Conservation

Every Mchenga species is endemic to Lake Malawi, so the genus's fate is the lake's fate. The IUCN Red List (assessments dated 2018) spreads the three species across categories rather than lumping them: M. thinos is Least Concern (lake-wide, no major identified threat), M. cyclicos is Near Threatened (a restricted, fragmented range), and M. conophoros is Critically Endangered (B1ab(v)) — flagged for a very small known range and declining mature individuals. That spread is the honest headline: most of the genus is not in immediate danger, but at least one species is genuinely imperilled, and none has a wide safety margin.

These fish carry little direct fisheries or aquarium-trade pressure (FishBase rates fishing vulnerability low), so the real risks are lake-scale. Lake Malawi is under documented strain: heavy artisanal and commercial over-fishing, exemplified by the collapse of the once-abundant chambo (Oreochromis spp.); sediment and nutrient loading from deforested, eroding catchments that smothers the sand and rock biotopes these bower-builders depend on; and warming. Roughly +33 °F of warming in the shallow surface layer has strengthened thermal stratification and reduced the mixing that drives nutrient upwelling and plankton productivity (Chavula et al. 2023, J. Great Lakes Res. 49(6):102241) — a direct threat to a genus that eats zooplankton in the upper water column. Layered on top is invasive-species risk, notably the spread of non-native Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) into the catchment, which Stauffer and colleagues (2022, Biological Invasions 24:1585–1597) warn could compete with and hybridise against native cichlids. None of this is cause to overstate Mchenga's peril — two of three species are LC/NT — but a planktivorous endemic in a warming, stratifying, over-fished lake has every reason to be watched.
