Reganochromis

Reganochromis is a monotypic genus of Lake Tanganyika cichlid containing the single deepwater species Reganochromis calliurus. It belongs to the Limnochromini, the lake's tribe of benthic, biparental, deepwater mouthbrooders, and lives a quiet life over sand and mud on the coastal slope, far below the famous rock reefs. Its most interesting true feature is evolutionary: molecular work shows Reganochromis is the close sister of the genus Baileychromis, and the whole Limnochromini radiation appears to have been driven not by the colour-based, habitat-island speciation of the rock cichlids but by competition for scarce food in the structurally featureless deep — a different engine of diversity in the same lake.

About the genus

Taxonomy & the radiation

Reganochromis is a genus of one. The type and only species, Reganochromis calliurus, was first described by George Albert Boulenger in 1901 as Paratilapia calliura, from material collected by J.E.S. Moore at Kalambo at the south end of Lake Tanganyika (the syntypes are held at the Natural History Museum, London). The genus name itself has a tangled history that is worth getting right, because Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Van der Laan, accessed 2026) spells it out: in 1920 C. Tate Regan placed the fish in a new genus Limnochromis, but the name he initially used, Leptochromis Regan 1920, was preoccupied by Leptochromis Bleeker 1875 in fishes. Gilbert Whitley supplied the replacement name Reganochromis in 1929 — "by being a replacement name," so the type species is automatically Paratilapia calliura Boulenger 1901. The genus, fittingly, honours Regan himself, the British ichthyologist (1878–1943) whose early-twentieth-century work on cichlid classification FishBase cites in noting the eponymy.

Reganochromis sits in the subfamily Pseudocrenilabrinae within the tribe Limnochromini, erected by Max Poll in his 1986 classification of Tanganyikan cichlids. The Limnochromini are the lake's deepwater, benthic, biparental mouthbrooders, and their membership has been actively revised. Duftner, Koblmüller & Sturmbauer (2005, Journal of Molecular Evolution 60: 277–289) showed with mitochondrial data that the tribe as traditionally drawn was polyphyletic — Gnathochromis pfefferi falls among the Tropheini and Benthochromis is an independent lineage — but the remaining core, including Reganochromis, is monophyletic. Within that core they recovered Reganochromis and Baileychromis as monophyletic sister genera. Takahashi (2014, Journal of Fish Biology 84: 929–936) later synonymised the tribe Greenwoodochromini into Limnochromini on infraorbital-bone characters, leaving a tidied tribe of roughly ten species in about seven genera (Reganochromis, Baileychromis, Limnochromis, Greenwoodochromis, Tangachromis, Triglachromis and Gnathochromis permaxillaris). All of this places Reganochromis firmly inside the so-called H-lineage of the Tanganyika flock rather than among the ancient lamprologine or ectodine lineages.

Defining features

Because the genus is monotypic, its "defining features" are simply those of R. calliurus: a slender, elongate, silvery cichlid built for life over open soft bottoms rather than for clinging to rock. Adults reach about 6 in (6 in) total length according to FishBase and the Eschmeyer-tracked literature, with females consistently smaller than males — field and aquarium reports (tanganyika.si) put mature females nearer 4.7 in (4.5 in). The body is laterally compressed and fairly low-slung, the head pointed, and the eyes large, as is typical of fishes that hunt in dim deepwater light. The common name in trade, "blue-tailed" Reganochromis, points to its best field mark: a coloured, often blue-edged caudal fin (the species epithet calliurus literally means "beautiful tail") set against an otherwise plainly silver-to-pearl flank.

Telling Reganochromis from its tribe-mates is mostly a matter of proportion and mouth. It lacks the grossly enlarged, scoop-like upper lip of Gnathochromis permaxillaris, the stout body of Limnochromis auritus, and the eel-like, sand-burrowing form of Triglachromis otostigma; it is more gracile and generalised than any of these. The genuinely important confusion, though, is nomenclatural, not morphological: hobbyists regularly mix up Reganochromis calliurus with the unrelated shell-dwelling lamprologine often sold as "Neolamprologus calliurus" (a name historically applied to the brevis/multifasciatus group). They share an epithet by coincidence only — the Reganochromis is a foot-long open-water mouthbrooder, the lamprologine a tiny snail-shell cave spawner. Always check the genus.

Range & habitat

Reganochromis calliurus is endemic to Lake Tanganyika and, within it, is genuinely lake-wide: collections and the aquarium trade record it from the far south (the type locality at Kalambo, plus Zambian sites such as Chituta Bay and Kalalangabo) up the Tanzanian and Congolese coasts to the north. The recurring note in the literature, repeated by tanganyika.si and by the Cichlid Room Companion, is that it is "common throughout the lake but never found in great numbers" — a thin, even distribution rather than the dense localised populations of the rock-dwelling mbuna-equivalents.

The biotope is the coastal soft-bottom slope. FishBase records it over sand at least to 197 ft; field summaries extend the band to roughly 50–330 ft (49–328 ft) and add that it is also taken over mud. This is the deep, structurally monotonous habitat that defines the Limnochromini, and it shapes everything else about the fish. The in-situ chemistry is that of Tanganyika generally: hard, alkaline, oxygen-rich surface water with a stable pH around 8.6–9.2 and conductivity reflecting the lake's high mineral load. FishBase's husbandry-derived envelope (pH 7.0–8.5, 73–82 °F / 73–82 °F) understates the field pH but captures the warm, stable thermal regime; the deep slope itself is cooler and more thermally constant than the wave-washed littoral, which is part of why these fish so rarely stray shallow.

Ecology & diet

Reganochromis is a deepwater carnivore, and its trophic niche is the connecting thread of the whole genus. FishBase classes it as omnivorous "but feeds mainly on shrimp," and assigns it a trophic level of about 3.6 — squarely predatory. Field-derived diet notes (tanganyika.si) describe it taking various invertebrates including shrimps and small crabs, plus small fishes, hunting over and just above the sand and mud rather than sifting the substrate the way a true sand-sifter (e.g. Xenotilapia) does. Tellingly, keepers report it does not dig for food even when housed over a mud floor, which fits a picker-and-chaser of mobile prey rather than a substrate processor.

What makes the genus ecologically interesting is the radiation it belongs to. Duftner et al. (2005) argued that the Limnochromini diversified relatively recently and almost simultaneously, around 2.9–3.5 million years ago, coinciding with an East African aridification phase ~2.5–3 Ma. Crucially, they proposed that because the deepwater habitat is structurally uniform and resource-poor, and because these fishes lack the geographic colour morphs that drive speciation in rock cichlids, the Limnochromini radiation was powered by competition and resource partitioning — different trophic specialisations carving up a thin food supply — rather than the allopatric, habitat-island model of the littoral flocks. Reganochromis's role in that community is the mid-water invertebrate-and-small-fish predator, distinct from the lip-scooping Gnathochromis permaxillaris or the detritus-and-diatom feeding Triglachromis nearby.

Behaviour & breeding

Socially, Reganochromis is the antithesis of an mbuna. Across the hobby literature it is described as fairly peaceful and pair-oriented, only mildly aggressive toward its own kind and chiefly when a pair has formed and claimed a spawning site (Seriously Fish; tanganyika.si). It is the breeding biology, however, that is the genus's signature, because it is a member of the Limnochromini — the tribe of biparental mouthbrooders — and R. calliurus shows that mode in a particularly well-documented form.

Spawning takes place inside a narrow, dark rocky cave rather than over an open pit, and the pair do not excavate. Male and female enter the cave alternately, releasing eggs and milt; the relatively large eggs (about 0.5 in) are first gathered by the female, then transferred to the male roughly a day later. Through the first week, eggs and larvae are passed back and forth between both parents; in the second week it is mostly the male that broods the developing larvae and fry. Fry are first released at about 19 days and then taken back into the mouth for roughly another 16 days, with broods reported up to about 60 young (tanganyika.si). This shared, alternating mouthbrooding — both sexes carrying, sometimes simultaneously when a brood is large (Seriously Fish) — is exactly the biparental pattern that defines the tribe and contrasts sharply with the female-only maternal mouthbrooding of the lake's haplochromine-derived groups and the substrate/cave spawning of the lamprologines.

In the aquarium

Reganochromis calliurus is a rewarding but uncommon aquarium fish, and the honest hobbyist verdict is "easy to keep, harder to find, and easy to misjudge." Keepers who have it (American Cichlid Association and other Tanganyikan groups) consistently call it peaceful, attractive, flexible on parameters and relatively straightforward to breed once a pair forms — but it is rarely seen in the trade because its deepwater lifestyle makes collection awkward (Seriously Fish). A realistic footprint is a 4 ft / 55–65 US gal tank for a single pair, with more space needed for additional pairs because settled pairs do become territorial around their cave.

Set-up should reflect the biotope: a fine sand floor, open swimming space, and a few rocks arranged to create the narrow, shaded caves the fish spawns in. Water should be hard and alkaline (pH around 8.0–9.0), warm (about 75–81 °F / 75–81 °F), and — this is the part casual keepers underestimate — pristine, because deepwater Tanganyikans are intolerant of accumulated nitrogenous waste and unstable chemistry. The classic mistakes are predictable: housing it with boisterous mbuna or other fish with clashing diets and temperaments (Seriously Fish suggests calm, non-competing tankmates such as Gnathochromis permaxillaris and Cyphotilapia frontosa); feeding a vegetable-heavy diet to what is a strict invertebrate-and-fish carnivore; and buying a single random pair rather than growing on a group of six to eight and letting a pair self-select. It is a fish for an intermediate-to-advanced Tanganyikan keeper — not because it is delicate day-to-day, but because sourcing healthy stock, getting the chemistry right, and giving it tankmates it actually tolerates all take some experience. Note, finally, the recurring naming trap: a buyer chasing "calliurus" can easily end up with the unrelated shell-dwelling lamprologine instead.

Conservation

At the species level the picture is reassuringly stable: the IUCN Red List assessed Reganochromis calliurus as Least Concern (assessment dated 2006), on the explicit grounds that it is widespread across Lake Tanganyika, so localised threats are unlikely to affect the population as a whole. Because the genus is monotypic, that single Least Concern listing is the whole genus-level status — there is no spread of categories to report. Collection pressure is light: the fish is a minor, occasional aquarium export rather than a trade staple, and FishBase rates its fishing vulnerability as low.

The honest caveat is at the scale of the lake, not the species. Lake Tanganyika is under real and documented strain. O'Reilly et al. (2003, Nature) linked twentieth-century warming and reduced vertical mixing to roughly a 20% decline in primary productivity, which thins the base of the food web that a mid-level predator like Reganochromis ultimately depends on. Cohen et al. (2016, PNAS) reconstructed an estimated ~38% loss of oxygenated benthic habitat as the oxygenated layer shoaled — directly relevant to a fish whose whole genus is committed to the deep benthic slope. Sedimentation from deforested catchments continues to degrade the littoral, and the lake supports an enormous pelagic fishery of clupeids (dagaa/ndagala) and the predatory Lates that feeds four nations — Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Zambia — now governed jointly through the Lake Tanganyika Authority (established 2008, FAO). None of this is targeted at Reganochromis, and the species remains Least Concern; but a deepwater specialist is exactly the kind of fish whose long-term prospects are tied to whether the lake's deep oxygenated habitat and productivity hold up. The accurate summary is: the species is fine today, the habitat it lives in is not unstressed.
