Taxonomy & naming
Glossogobius flavipinnis was described in 1938 by the German ichthyologist Hans Josef Aurich, as part of the broader documentation of the highly endemic freshwater fauna of Sulawesi's ancient lake systems undertaken by European naturalists in the first half of the twentieth century. The specific epithet flavipinnis (Latin, "yellow-finned") refers to a yellow colouration in the fins noted in the original description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists Glossogobius flavipinnis (Aurich, 1938) as a valid species within the family Oxudercidae (the true gobies), genus Glossogobius.
Glossogobius is a widespread genus of generally larger, more generalist "tank gobies" or "river gobies" occurring in freshwater and brackish habitats from Africa through South and Southeast Asia to the western Pacific and Australia. Most Glossogobius species are wide-ranging and not of particular conservation concern; G. flavipinnis stands out as one of several range-restricted Glossogobius endemic to Sulawesi's isolated lake basins, alongside G. matanensis and G. intermedius.
Morphology
As with other Glossogobius, G. flavipinnis is expected to show the genus's characteristic elongate, cylindrical body, a large, somewhat flattened head and the fused pelvic-fin sucker disc typical of true gobies, though used in this genus more for resting on substrate than for the strong current-climbing behaviour seen in the amphidromous Sicydiinae gobies.
