About the genus

Ivindomyrus is a genus of African weakly electric fish in the elephantfish family (Mormyridae), restricted in the atlas to Gabon and named for the Ivindo River, a major tributary of the Ogooue draining the country's rainforest interior. Like other mormyrids, Ivindomyrus species generate a weak electric field from an organ near the tail and read distortions in that field through electroreceptors, letting them navigate and hunt for small invertebrates in murky, tannin-stained, or turbid water where vision is of limited use. The two species in the atlas run 7–11 in, within the typical size range for a mid-sized mormyrid.

Mormyrids as a group are mostly nocturnal, bottom-oriented fish, and Ivindomyrus is no exception - little published life-history detail exists beyond the taxonomic descriptions, and the genus has essentially no presence in the aquarium hobby, where African elephantfish in general are a minority interest handled mainly by specialists, owing to their electroreception, their need for soft, weakly mineralized water, and their reputation for being difficult in mixed community tanks. One of the genus's two species is assessed as Vulnerable, a status that fits a genus confined to a single Central African river system where habitat pressure from logging and development is a recognized regional concern.
