Ivindomyrus opdenboschi is a little-known member of the mormyrids, the weakly electric African fishes that make up one of the four surviving continental branches of the Osteoglossiformes — the bonytongues, among the oldest living lineages of teleost fish, named for a toothed bone on the tongue that bites against the roof of the mouth. This particular mormyrid is a narrow-range endemic of the Ivindo River in Gabon, described in 1975 and now assessed as Vulnerable, and it is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade: what little is documented about it comes from museum specimens and range surveys rather than fishkeeping experience.

Taxonomy & naming

Ivindomyrus opdenboschi belongs to the order Osteoglossiformes, the bonytongues — an ancient, scattered radiation of freshwater fishes found today on four continents (South America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australasia) and united by a toothed bone on the floor of the mouth that bites against toothed plates on the roof. Within that order it sits in the family Mormyridae, the elephantnoses and mormyrids, an entirely African family of weakly electric fish.

The species was described by the Belgian ichthyologists Léon Taverne and Gaston Géry in 1975 from the Ivindo River near Makokou in northeastern Gabon; the holotype (MRAC 80-15-P-6) is held at the Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale in Tervuren, Belgium. The genus name Ivindomyrus pairs the river's name, Ivindo, with a mormyrid-family suffix echoing Mormyrus, marking it as a mormyrid first characterized from that river system. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Ivindomyrus opdenboschi as a valid taxon.

The species epithet opdenboschi honors Armand Opdenbosch (1929–1977), a technician and taxidermist at the Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale, recognizing his technical work supporting the museum's mormyrid systematics research — a common convention in ichthyology of naming species for the preparators whose specimen work underpins the taxonomy.

Morphology

Like other mormyrids, Ivindomyrus opdenboschi has the family's characteristic build: an elongated, laterally compressed body, a small mouth, a single long-based dorsal fin set well back on the body opposite a similarly long anal fin, and a deeply forked caudal fin attached to a slender caudal peduncle that houses the electric organ near the tail base. The best-documented measurement is size — FishBase records a maximum total length of about 10.8 in, making it a mid-sized mormyrid, larger than diminutive genera such as Petrocephalus but well short of the largest members of the family.

As in all mormyrids, an electric organ in the caudal peduncle produces a weak, species-specific pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD), used to electrolocate in dark, sediment- and tannin-stained river water where vision is of limited use, and very likely for communication between individuals — EOD-based courtship and dominance signaling is documented across the family. Mormyrids are also known for having among the highest brain-to-body mass ratios of any fish, built around an unusually large, foliated cerebellum that processes the constant stream of electrosensory input; this "thinking fish" reputation belongs to the family as a whole, though I. opdenboschi's own brain has not been specifically studied. Beyond FishBase's size record, detailed external description of this species is sparse.

Habitat

Ivindomyrus opdenboschi is a narrow-range endemic of the Ivindo River, a major tributary of the Ogooué in northeastern Gabon, West-Central Africa — the rainforest drainage that runs past Makokou, the species' type locality, and through what is now Ivindo National Park. It is recorded as a freshwater, demersal species, associated with the river bottom rather than open water.

Detailed water-chemistry data have not been published for this species. The Ivindo is a tropical, forest-shaded river typical of the wider Ogooué basin — generally warm, and, like many Central African blackwater rivers, on the soft and acidic-to-neutral side, often tannin-stained by decaying leaf litter, conditions in which an electric sense outperforms vision. Any specific temperature or pH figures here should be read as inferred from that regional pattern rather than measured directly for I. opdenboschi, which the primary sources do not report.

Feeding

No species-specific diet study has been published for Ivindomyrus opdenboschi. As with other mormyrids, it almost certainly forages over the riverbed for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and similar benthic prey — located by electrolocation rather than sight. Mormyrids typically feed mainly after dark, when their electric sense gives them an advantage that vision-dependent competitors and predators lack, but this behavior has not been directly documented in this species and should be treated as inference from the family rather than a confirmed fact.

Mating

Mormyrid courtship and spawning are poorly understood even in well-studied genera, and nothing species-specific has been documented for Ivindomyrus opdenboschi. Across the family, wild mormyrids are believed to be seasonal spawners whose reproduction is cued to the flood pulse of their rivers, and the electric organ discharge is thought to play a role in courtship and species recognition — allowing individuals to identify potential mates by their pulse pattern in murky, low-visibility water. The fine detail of how this plays out for any single mormyrid species, including this one, remains largely unrecorded.

Breeding

Ivindomyrus opdenboschi has essentially no breeding record, in captivity or in the wild. Mormyrids as a group are rarely, if ever, bred by aquarists, and the biology behind their reproduction is thin even in the scientific literature; some species are thought to scatter or deposit eggs among vegetation and offer some form of guarding, but this has not been confirmed for I. opdenboschi specifically. No aquarium spawning of this species has been reported, and none should be assumed possible without further study.

In the aquarium

Ivindomyrus opdenboschi is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — hobby literature searched for this account turned up no mentions of it in the trade, and it should be treated as effectively unavailable and unstudied outside museum collections and range surveys. Anyone who does encounter a genuine specimen should apply general mormyrid care as a starting point: soft, dim, tannin-tinted water with subdued lighting and cover (roots, driftwood, leaf litter) to mimic its home river, a tight-fitting lid, and a mature, well-cycled tank, since mormyrids are notoriously sensitive to ammonia, nitrite and poor water quality.

A few family-wide cautions matter here specifically because so little else is known about this species: mormyrids can be aggressive toward their own kind in confined spaces, so any group needs generous room and hiding places to break lines of sight; and their electroreceptive skin makes them unusually sensitive to copper-based and some other medications, so any treatment should be dosed conservatively and only when necessary. At a maximum size around 10.6 in, this is not a nano-tank fish even before its near-total absence from the trade is taken into account.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Ivindomyrus opdenboschi as Vulnerable, an assessment dated 16 February 2009 under criterion B2ab(iii) — a rating driven by its very restricted geographic range, confined to the Ivindo River system in Gabon, combined with an inferred decline in the quality of its habitat.

Because the species is known only from this single river drainage, it has no buffer against localized pressures such as deforestation, sedimentation, or other habitat degradation within the Ivindo/Ogooué basin. Part of its range falls within or near Ivindo National Park, but detailed, up-to-date population data are not available, and its conservation status should be considered current only as of the 2009 assessment.
