Anatolichthys chantrei is a small, hardy toothcarp native to the Tigris drainage of southeastern Turkey, northern Iraq, and western Iran — one of the more easterly representatives of a genus that ranges from the Iberian Peninsula to Pakistan along the Old World arid belt. Like its Anatolian congeners it is adapted to hard, alkaline water, and it tolerates modest salinity, but studies of fry growth show it performs best at low rather than high salt concentrations, pointing to a core freshwater-to-lightly-brackish niche. It has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN, yet the pressures that have pushed so many Aphanius to the brink — spring-water extraction, agricultural drainage, and competition from introduced mosquitofish — threaten its basin-endemic populations as surely as they do assessed species.

Taxonomy & naming

Anatolichthys chantrei was described by the French naturalist Gaillard in 1895, with the type locality lying in the border zone between southeastern Turkey (then the Ottoman province of Mesopotamia) and the Tigris headwaters region. The authority appears in parentheses in the current combination because the name has been moved from its original genus placement since description. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name; FishBase notes a synonymization with Aphanius danfordi under some treatments, and the taxonomy of this eastern Anatolian group has been periodically revised. Two subspecies have been described — venustus Kosswig & Sözer, 1945 and obrukensis Akşiray, 1948 — reflecting the geographical fragmentation of populations across the Tigris system.

The genus Aphanius is placed in the family Aphaniidae, segregated from the broader Cyprinodontidae in modern molecular classifications. Aphaniidae encompasses the Old World toothcarps of the Mediterranean rim, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Iranian Plateau, all sharing an adaptation to warm, often chemically extreme waters that larger fishes cannot exploit. Within Aphaniidae, Aphanius is the most speciose genus, with species distributed from the Iberian coast through North Africa, the Levant, Anatolia, and east to Pakistan.

This fish was long listed as Aphanius chantrei; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Anatolichthys, and the current combination Anatolichthys chantrei is followed here.

Morphology

Anatolichthys chantrei reaches a maximum of 2.8 in total length (FishBase), making it a moderately sized member of a genus in which most species stay under 2–2.4 in. The body plan is typical of the genus: a stocky, laterally compressed profile with a bluntly rounded snout, a relatively large upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, and a single dorsal fin set well back toward the caudal peduncle.

Sexual dichromatism is pronounced in Aphanius, and A. chantrei follows the family pattern. Males display a boldly patterned livery of alternating light and dark vertical bars or blotches on a silver-blue to greenish base, with the pattern intensifying in breeding condition. Females are drabber — brownish or olive with a more reticulated or spotted pattern and a rounder abdomen — a difference so marked that the two sexes were historically sometimes described as separate species. Finnage in males is more elaborately coloured, with dark-edged unpaired fins.

Habitat

The native range of Anatolichthys chantrei spans the Tigris drainage across southeastern Turkey, northern Iraq, and western Iran — the heart of the Old World arid belt where Aphanius reaches its eastern distribution. In Turkey the species is associated with the freshwater and low-salinity springs, streams, and lake margins of the upper Tigris catchment; in Iraq and Iran it occupies corresponding lowland waters draining toward the Mesopotamian alluvial plain.

Like all Anatolian Aphanius, A. chantrei inhabits hard, alkaline water. Congeners from the same region (such as A. asquamatus, profiled by Seriously Fish) are recorded at pH 8.3–9.2, hardness 268–625 ppm, and temperatures of 54–82 °F — parameters that reflect the mineral-rich spring water typical of Anatolian limestone country. Anatolichthys chantrei shares this general template, with FishBase recording a subtropical temperature range of 61–75 °F and a freshwater to lightly brackish tolerance. Yıldırım et al. (2008) showed that fry growth is optimised at low salinity (around 4 ‰) rather than in purely fresh water, suggesting the species benefits from trace mineral enrichment but is not a halophile in the manner of some coastal congeners.

Microhabitats used by Anatolian Aphanius include shallow, sun-warmed margins of springs, irrigation channels, and slow streams, often with algal mats and emergent vegetation that provide spawning surfaces and food.

Feeding

Anatolichthys chantrei is a micropredatory omnivore in the mould of its genus. Congener data from Seriously Fish describes the diet as small crustaceans, insect larvae, zooplankton, and algae — a combination that reflects both the surface-oriented, upturned mouth of Aphanius and the algae-rich, sun-exposed spring habitats the fish occupies.

In the aquarium A. chantrei accepts a wide range of small live and frozen foods: Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Cyclops, Chironomid larvae (bloodworm), and mosquito larvae are all eagerly taken. A component of vegetable or algae-based food helps maintain condition. The upturned mouth makes surface feeding efficient, and the fish patrol open water as well as picking invertebrates from algal surfaces. Frequent small meals replicate the continuous opportunistic foraging of wild fish more closely than infrequent large feeds.

Mating

Anatolichthys chantrei is a non-annual killifish and breeds as a continuous or seasonally extended plant spawner rather than as an annual soil-burier. Based on congener data from Seriously Fish (A. asquamatus), females in Anatolian Aphanius deposit eggs on a near-continuous basis across the warmer months — typically April through September — releasing eggs singly or in small batches attached to algal mats, fine-leaved plants, or spawning mops via adhesive filaments.

Males are territorial during the breeding season, setting up and defending small patches from which they court passing females with lateral displays that show off the barred or blotched breeding colouration. There is no bubble-nest construction or mouthbrooding — egg care is nil after spawning. The pair hover side by side during each brief spawning act; multiple events occur daily throughout the season, distributing eggs across available plant surfaces rather than concentrating them in a single mass spawn.

Breeding

Eggs of Anatolian Aphanius are small, adhesive, and attached to plants or algal mats by sticky filaments. Incubation in warm water takes approximately 12–17 days (congener A. asquamatus data, Seriously Fish); there is no diapause and no requirement for a dry period — the eggs develop directly in water, confirming the non-annual, plant-spawner reproductive mode. Fry are tiny at hatching and require infusoria or commercial fry powder as first foods before progressing to Artemia nauplii.

In an aquarium setting, the easiest approach is to provide dense clumps of Java moss or synthetic spawning mops and remove the eggs or fry regularly to a separate rearing vessel, since adults will predate fry given the chance. A slightly saline water (1–2 g/L marine salt) during rearing may mirror the lightly brackish conditions that Yıldırım et al. found beneficial for fry growth, though fry can also be raised in hard, alkaline fresh water. Water temperature in the mid-range of the species' tolerance (64–72 °F) during rearing is appropriate; excessively warm water accelerates development but reduces dissolved oxygen, which is unfavourable for small fry in dense cultures.

In the aquarium

Anatolichthys chantrei is not commonly encountered in the ornamental trade but is maintained by specialist killifish hobbyists, particularly those interested in the Anatolian and Middle Eastern fauna. Its care needs map closely to those of other hard-water Aphanius: a small aquarium (23.6–31.5 in sufficient for a group) with hard, alkaline, well-oxygenated water, a secure lid, and ample open swimming space punctuated by algal mats or fine-leaved plants for spawning and cover.

The species is active, relatively bold, and visually rewarding once males display their full barred colouration. A species tank or a setup shared only with other hard-water killifish or small, fast, similarly-sized companions avoids the aggression and predation risks that arise in mixed community settings. Soft or acidic water must be avoided — this is not a blackwater killie but a fish of limestone springs. A small addition of marine salt (1–2 g/L) can be beneficial, particularly for fry, but is not obligatory for adults in properly hard water. Temperature management matters: Anatolian springs can be cool in winter (54–59 °F) and warm in summer (up to 82 °F), and the natural thermal cycle can be replicated to stimulate seasonal breeding behaviour.

FishBase notes that the species is easy to maintain in the aquarium — a straightforward statement that reflects Aphanius generally: these are tough, adaptable fish within their chemical parameter window, provided the hobbyist respects the hard-alkaline requirement and avoids the soft-water setups that suit many other killies.

Conservation

Anatolichthys chantrei has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List — it carries the default Not Evaluated (NE) status — yet the conservation context for Anatolian Aphanius is sobering. The genus as a whole contains some of the most endangered freshwater fishes in the Old World; Seriously Fish documents that many Anatolian Aphanius species stand on the verge of extinction driven by a combination of spring-water abstraction for agriculture and municipal supply, drainage and canalization of the shallow margins the fish depend on, and competition from introduced Gambusia (mosquitofish), which are voracious egg and fry predators released across Turkey in ill-conceived mosquito-control programmes.

Anatolichthys chantrei occupies a geographically fragmented range in the politically complex border zone of southeastern Turkey, northern Iraq, and western Iran — a region where long-running agricultural intensification in the Tigris basin has drastically reduced the spring and wetland habitats that Aphanius requires. The two described subspecies (venustus and obrukensis) indicate that historical populations were already genetically isolated across restricted localities, making each subpopulation potentially irreplaceable. The species' tolerance of low salinity and its FishBase classification under Turkish distribution suggest the Turkish populations are the best-documented; Iraqi and Iranian populations may be even more poorly surveyed and at greater immediate risk from regional water infrastructure projects. A formal IUCN assessment is overdue and would almost certainly reveal that some or all population units qualify for threatened status.
