Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion kouamense was first described as Aphyosemion kouamense by Legros in 1999, based on specimens collected at the edge of the Monts de Cristal, approximately 2 mi north of Namveng Ayong in north-western Gabon. The specific epithet honours the locality or a collector associated with the collection site; the exact derivation is not detailed in available secondary literature. The authority cited as (Radda, 1975) in some checklists reflects an earlier nomenclatural action; the Marine Species Traits database and the Gabon fish checklist corroborate the authorship as Legros, 1999, though the parenthesised form signals the name has been moved from its original genus.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Chromaphyosemion, the monophyletic clade of chromatic west-central African Aphyosemion relatives elevated to generic rank and characterised by their distinctive non-annual reproductive biology and vivid, often reticulate male colour patterns. FishBase still lists the species under its synonym Aphyosemion kouamense. The American Killifish Association (AKA) likewise classifies the fish under the Chromaphyosemion subgenus. Within Chromaphyosemion the species belongs to a cluster of Gabonese and Cameroonian endemics; no subspecies or named strains are formally recognised, though hobbyist records reference BDBG locality codes for collection-specific populations.

Morphology
Like all Chromaphyosemion, A. kouamense is a small, slender killifish. FishBase records a maximum total length of 1.7 in, placing it firmly in the dwarf-killi size class — typical for a rainforest-stream specialist with a diet of small invertebrates. The body is laterally compressed with a slightly upturned mouth adapted for surface and mid-water prey interception.
Males display the rich, often reticulate colour patterning characteristic of the genus: vivid red, blue, and orange markings over a ground colour that intensifies under optimal water conditions and during courtship. Females are, by contrast, cryptically coloured — brownish or olive with subdued patterning — a sexual dimorphism typical across Chromaphyosemion and common to most killifish. Detailed scale counts and fin-ray formulae from the original description have not been widely reproduced in English-language sources available to date.
Habitat
The type locality is set among the lower slopes of the Monts de Cristal, a range of inselbergs and granite hills in the Estuaire and Woleu-Ntem provinces of north-western Gabon. The streams here flow through lowland and submontane rainforest, producing water that is soft, acidic, and stained with tannins from leaf litter and decomposing organic matter. FishBase records the species from small, permanent freshwater creeks and characterises the habitat as benthopelagic — the fish occupying a zone just above the substrate and through the water column rather than being a strict surface-dweller or bottom-hugger.
Water chemistry at the type locality and surrounding area reflects the region's ancient granite geology and heavy forest cover: FishBase gives a pH range of 4.5–5.5, placing this fish firmly in blackwater acidic territory. Temperature is broadly tropical, with FishBase citing approximately 77 °F as representative. The Monts de Cristal are recognised as a biodiversity hotspot within the Congo Basin forest region, and the streams draining them hold a disproportionately high density of narrow-range endemics.
Feeding
Aphyosemion kouamense feeds on benthic and mid-water invertebrates, as recorded by FishBase. In the small, shaded forest creeks it inhabits, the diet consists primarily of aquatic insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms, and small terrestrial invertebrates that fall onto the water surface — the typical prey spectrum of a rainforest-stream killifish.
In the aquarium the species accepts live and frozen foods readily: artemia (brine shrimp) nauplii and adults, daphnia, bloodworm, tubifex, and small chironomid larvae are all appropriate. The mouth is small, consistent with a preference for prey no larger than a few millimetres; oversized foods may be rejected or cause digestive problems. Feeding twice daily in modest amounts helps maintain water quality in the soft, low-buffering water this species requires.
Mating
Aphyosemion kouamense is a non-annual killifish. Unlike the annual species that dominate the savanna and Sahel belt, Chromaphyosemion inhabit the permanent or near-permanent streams of the lowland rainforest, where the absence of a dry-season die-off has shaped a fundamentally different reproductive strategy. Rather than burying eggs in substrate to survive desiccation, the pair deposits adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, moss, floating mops, or root masses near the surface or substrate, with spawning occurring over days to weeks in a leisurely, repeated fashion.
Male courtship is vigorous and visual: the male displays his full colour pattern — intensified during breeding condition — to the female, driving her toward a spawning site with lateral fin displays and nudging. The female signals receptivity by accepting the male alongside her. Spawning embraces are brief; each produces a small number of adhesive eggs. AKA notes that Chromaphyosemion as a group are easily bred on spawning mops, confirming the plant-/mop-spawning mode for the genus. Because males can be persistent and females may be harassed in confined quarters, the breeding setup benefits from good plant cover and hiding places, or the use of a separate breeding tank.
Breeding
Eggs laid on spawning mops or fine-leaved plants incubate in water — there is no diapause and no requirement to dry or cold-store the eggs in peat, which is the defining difference from annual killies. AKA guidance for Chromaphyosemion gives an incubation period of approximately two weeks at typical aquarium temperatures, after which the fry hatch and are immediately free-swimming and able to take micro-foods.
Newly hatched fry are small but not extraordinarily so by killifish standards, and can begin feeding on freshly hatched artemia nauplii, vinegar eels, or micro-worms from day one. The water for rearing should match the soft, slightly acidic parameters preferred by the adults; hard or alkaline water at this stage can cause developmental problems. Adults are not significantly cannibalistic toward eggs laid on mops, but fry should be moved to a separate grow-out vessel as soon as practical to reduce predation risk. Growth is relatively rapid, and juveniles show sex-specific colour differentiation within weeks. The species is comparatively long-lived for a killifish — AKA records two to five years as typical for Chromaphyosemion.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion kouamense is suited to a small, heavily planted specialist setup that replicates its forest-stream habitat. A tank of 8–16 US gal is adequate for a pair or trio; the species does not require a large volume but benefits greatly from dense planting, floating cover, dim lighting filtered through surface plants or tannin-stained water, and a dark substrate that shows off male colouration. Dried Indian almond leaves or oak leaves on the substrate release tannins, lower pH slightly, and provide the tannin-stained blackwater the species comes from.
Target water parameters should track the type locality: pH 4.5–5.5, very soft water (low GH/KH), temperature 73–79 °F. Filtration should be gentle — a small sponge filter or a slow-flow hang-on-back produces the low-current, oxygen-rich but tranquil conditions of a shaded forest stream. Avoid strong flow, which is uncharacteristic of the habitat and stresses small killifish. Tankmates should be chosen with care: other small, soft-water species (micro-rasboras, small Corydoras, small tetras) are workable, but the safest and most productive approach for breeding is a species tank. Chromaphyosemion are generally not aggressive toward fish of similar or larger size but may harass smaller fish.
The species is available in specialist killifish societies and through the AKA and European killi clubs, where hobbyist-bred stock circulates. It is not a regular retail fish. Its rarity in the hobby and restricted wild distribution make responsible husbandry — accurate record-keeping of collection locality if known, and sharing of captive stock within the killi community — a meaningful conservation contribution.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion kouamense (under its synonym Aphyosemion kouamense) as Data Deficient (DD) on 16 February 2009, with assessor Moelants T. noting that insufficient information exists to determine extinction risk. The population trend is recorded as unknown. This is not reassuring: Data Deficient for a single-locality endemic in a heavily forested region subject to increasing extractive pressure often precedes future Red Listing in a threatened category once survey data are collected.
The Monts de Cristal are a recognised biodiversity priority area, but forest loss from logging, agricultural expansion, and road-building in north-western Gabon continues to fragment and degrade the catchments of small endemics like this species. Small forest streams are disproportionately vulnerable to siltation from cleared slopes, changes in canopy cover that alter water temperature and pH, and direct channel disruption. The type locality at the edge of the Monts de Cristal sits near the boundary of human influence in one of Gabon's more accessible northern regions.
No specific conservation measures targeting this species are recorded in available sources. Its persistence in specialist killifish collections provides a modest insurance population, but captive maintenance cannot substitute for protection of intact forest and water chemistry at the handful of streams where the species is known. Targeted field surveys to establish population size, range extent, and current habitat condition are the most urgent need before a meaningful conservation assessment becomes possible.
