Epiplatys roloffi was described in 1978 by Raymond Romand, a French aquarist and taxonomist who described numerous West African killifish species through the 1970s and 1980s. The specific epithet honours Erwin Roloff, whose name is also attached to Aphyosemion roloffi and other West African killifish collected or documented during the same era of intensive field and hobbyist interest in the region's Nothobranchiidae. Epiplatys is a genus of roughly forty described species distributed across West and Central Africa, generally referred to in the aquarium hobby by the vernacular name "panchax."
