Taxonomy & naming
Hypsolebias alternatus was first described in 1994 by Wilson J. E. M. Costa and G. C. Brasil as Cynolebias alternatus, published in the Revue française d'Aquariologie et d'Herpétologie (volume 21, nos. 1–2) alongside two other new annual killifish from the Rio São Francisco basin. The original type locality is a swamp close to the Rio Paracatú, a major tributary of the upper São Francisco, near the town of João Pinheiro in Minas Gerais state, at approximately 17°6'S 46°2'W. The authority is therefore rendered in parentheses — (Costa & Brasil, 1994) — because the species has since been transferred out of Cynolebias.
Costa's later taxonomic revisions reorganised South American annual killifish extensively. The species was moved to Simpsonichthys, a large genus erected to accommodate the diverse assemblage of Brazilian annual killies previously lumped under Cynolebias. Within Simpsonichthys, Costa recognised five subgenera; alternatus was assigned to the subgenus Hypsolebias, which groups species sharing particular meristic and colour characters. A 2006 revision by Costa recognised fifty valid species across the five subgenera of Simpsonichthys, confirming alternatus as a member of the Flammeus species group — an assemblage defined by the barred fin markings prominent in males. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, Fricke & van der Laan) records the valid combination as Hypsolebias alternatus.
Comparative morphology reported by Practical Fishkeeping notes that H. alternatus most closely resembles S. fasciatus and S. delucai, the three species sharing a rounded anal fin in males and a spatula-shaped anal fin in females — a configuration unusual within the Simpsonichthys radiation and useful for distinguishing this group from other Hypsolebias members.
This fish was long listed as Simpsonichthys alternatus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Hypsolebias, and the current combination Hypsolebias alternatus is followed here.
Morphology
Males of Hypsolebias alternatus reach a maximum of approximately 1.5 in standard length, with FishBase noting a maximum recorded size of 2 in. The body plan follows the compact, laterally compressed build typical of South American annual killies: a deep body, rounded head, upturned mouth adapted for surface or near-surface feeding, and large eyes positioned high and forward on the skull. Dorsal fin-ray counts average around 20 and anal fin-ray counts around 22, placing the species in the higher-rayed part of the Simpsonichthys spectrum.
Male colouration is the defining character of the Flammeus group: the body carries iridescent blue-green or greenish scaling overlain with a barred or reticulated pattern, and crucially the anal and caudal fins display a conspicuous red distal bar — the marking from which the species group takes its name. Females are cryptically coloured in brownish or olive tones with a mottled or banded pattern that provides camouflage in the leaf-litter substrate of their ephemeral pools. The rounded anal fin of males and the spatula-shaped anal fin of females are diagnostic characters that distinguish alternatus and its closest relatives from other members of Simpsonichthys.
Habitat
Hypsolebias alternatus is endemic to the upper Rio São Francisco drainage in Minas Gerais state, central Brazil. The type locality — a swamp near the Rio Paracatú tributary close to João Pinheiro — is representative of the species' habitat: shallow, temporary bodies of water that form on the Cerrado (Brazilian savanna) during the wet season, typically between November and March, and dry completely during the long dry season. These pools accumulate over laterite or clay soils and are often heavily shaded by emergent and riparian vegetation; the water is typically warm, soft, and dark with dissolved organic material from decaying plant matter.
The Cerrado is one of South America's most biodiverse and most threatened biomes, and the seasonal pool systems it harbours are highly dynamic. Water temperatures in these pools fluctuate substantially through the day and across the season, commonly ranging from around 68 °F in the cooler dry-edge months to 84 °F or higher at peak summer temperatures. pH tends toward the acidic to neutral range given the peat- and leaf-litter-rich substrate, but specific water chemistry data for H. alternatus pools have not been published in the accessible literature.
Feeding
Like all members of the Rivulidae, Hypsolebias alternatus is a carnivore whose wild diet consists primarily of small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans, zooplankton, and small worms — whatever the ephemeral pool offers in the brief wet season. The upturned mouth and forward-positioned eyes are characteristic of a fish that hunts at or near the water surface, targeting insects that fall onto the water or hover just above it, as well as invertebrates in the water column.
In captivity the species presents no feeding difficulties. Live and frozen small invertebrates — Artemia nauplii, Daphnia, Cyclops, bloodworm (Chironomus larvae), and small white worms — are all eagerly accepted. The life span is short, growth is rapid, and the fish should be fed generously to support the fast maturation that characterises annual killies. Overfeeding with rich live foods accelerates conditioning for spawning.
Mating
The reproductive behaviour of Hypsolebias alternatus follows the annual killifish pattern: spawning occurs by diving, in mated pairs, into the soft substrate of the pool floor. The male courts the female at the surface with lateral displays that show off his barred fin markings and iridescent body colour — the red distal bar on the anal and caudal fins is thought to function as a species-recognition signal within the diverse Simpsonichthys assemblage, where multiple species may share the same pool system.
Once the female is receptive, the pair press together side by side and simultaneously plunge into the peat, mud, or detritus substrate, releasing and fertilising eggs at depth. The pair resurface and the process may be repeated many times in a single session. No nest is constructed and there is no parental care of any kind after the eggs are deposited. The entire above-water breeding season for wild fish may span only a few weeks before the pool begins to dry and the adults perish.
Breeding
The eggs of Hypsolebias alternatus are drought-resistant diapausing eggs that remain buried in the substrate through the dry season, sometimes for months, in a state of arrested development. The eggs undergo diapause — a programmed developmental pause — that protects the embryo from desiccation and synchronises hatching with the return of rains. According to data from It Rains Fishes, eggs develop over 8–10 weeks at 77–84 °F, more slowly at 70–75 °F. Hatching occurs 2–6 hours after the eggs are wetted at 64–68 °F, mimicking the flooding of the dry pool by seasonal rains.
In the hobby, the standard technique for annual killies mirrors the wild cycle. Eggs are collected from a peat or coir spawning medium placed on the tank floor, the wet medium is lightly dried, then stored in a sealed container or bag at room temperature for the appropriate incubation period. After 8–10 weeks (or longer if needed), the medium is flooded with soft, slightly acidic water at around 68 °F, and fry hatch within hours. Newly hatched fry are relatively large compared to those of non-annual killies and can be fed Artemia nauplii or Paramecium from day one. Captive fish typically live 10–12 months; wild fish survive only as long as their pool holds water, often 6–8 months.
In the aquarium
Hypsolebias alternatus is a specialist fish suited to killifish hobbyists familiar with annual species. The small size — males under 1.6 in — means a pair or trio can be maintained in a modest tank of 11.8–17.7 in, but the water quality and temperature stability requirements demand attentive husbandry. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 6.0–7.0) at 72–79 °F suits the species well; the tank should be heavily planted or furnished with leaf litter and floating plants to provide cover and to diffuse the light that females in particular prefer. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as all killies are accomplished jumpers.
For spawning, a layer of peat or coconut coir fibre on the tank floor — or a small spawning container filled with the medium — should be provided at all times. The substrate should be soft enough for the fish to dive into it comfortably. Pairs or a single male with two females work well; multiple males will fight. Because the lifespan is inherently short, obtaining eggs and initiating the storage-and-hatching cycle promptly is the priority — an adult pair in good condition and fed regularly on live and frozen foods will spawn continuously during their brief lives. The species is available through specialist killifish societies and hobbyist networks rather than the general trade.
Conservation
Hypsolebias alternatus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. The species is endemic to a restricted area of the upper Rio São Francisco basin in Minas Gerais, and its entire existence depends on temporary swamp habitats in the Cerrado biome — one of the world's most threatened tropical biomes, having lost more than half its original extent to agriculture, ranching, and infrastructure over the past half-century. The São Francisco basin in Minas Gerais is intensively farmed, with sugarcane, soy, and cattle operations converting seasonal wetlands to productive land and draining or channelling the ephemeral pools that annual killies require.
Simpsonichthys as a genus includes multiple range-restricted endemics facing comparable threats, and several species are considered vulnerable or critically endangered in Brazilian national assessments even without formal IUCN listings. For H. alternatus, the combination of a known single type locality, dependence on a disappearing habitat type, and the absence of monitoring data creates the conditions for a threatened status if the species were formally assessed. Killifish enthusiasts maintain ex-situ populations of annual killies through specialist clubs and egg-sharing networks, and for narrow endemics like H. alternatus this hobby-based conservation carries genuine value as insurance against local or regional extirpation.
