Melanorivulus crixas is a diminutive South American rivuline reaching barely 2.7 cm standard length, endemic to the Crixás Açu River drainage of the upper Araguaia basin in Goiás state, Brazil. It inhabits the shallowest reaches of small forest streams dominated by buriti palms, threading through dense aquatic vegetation over orange clay substrates in clear, mildly acidic water. The IUCN assesses it as Vulnerable under criterion D2, reflecting the species' extremely restricted range and the ongoing degradation of the Cerrado-edge wetlands it depends on. In the specialist killifish hobby it is prized as a compact, peaceful non-annual mop-spawner well suited to small dedicated breeding set-ups.

Taxonomy & naming

Melanorivulus crixas was described by Wilson J. E. M. Costa in 2007 as one of five new rivuline species from the middle Araguaia River basin. The original authority is enclosed in parentheses because the combination is presented under Melanorivulus, a genus erected by Costa in 2006 and later treated as a subgenus of Rivulus by Huber (2012) on phylogenetic grounds. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes records the valid name as Melanorivulus crixas (Costa, 2007), placing it in the family Rivulidae within the order Cyprinodontiformes.

Costa placed M. crixas in the R. zygonectes species group, diagnosing it by a diffuse dark grey stripe running from behind the eye to the base of the caudal fin — a character shared with close relatives but expressed in a distinctive pattern in this species. The genus Melanorivulus encompasses roughly 35–48 species spread across the central Brazilian plateau, the Amazon basin, Paraguay, and northern Argentina, all sharing the non-annual life strategy of living in permanent or near-permanent watercourses.

This fish was long listed as Melanorivulus crixasensis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Melanorivulus, and the current combination Melanorivulus crixas is followed here.

Morphology

M. crixas is a miniature rivuline: FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.1 in in males and 1 in in females, placing it among the smaller members of its genus. The body is slender and moderately compressed, with the rounded caudal fin and slightly upturned mouth typical of surface-associated rivulines. Scales are moderate in size and cycloid.

The most distinctive marking is the diffuse dark grey postorbital stripe that runs horizontally from behind the orbit to the base of the caudal fin — the character Costa used to assign the species to the R. zygonectes group. Ground coloration in males is brownish to tan on the dorsum, paling to cream or white on the ventral surface; the flanks often show a faint iridescent sheen under angled light. Females are typically plainer, with reduced markings. Sexual dimorphism in colour is present but subtle compared with many other rivulines, consistent with the species' modest size.

Habitat

The species is confined to the Crixás Açu River drainage within the Araguaia basin, Goiás state, central Brazil — a region where the Cerrado savanna meets gallery forest along permanent watercourses. Known collection localities cluster around Rio Crixas Mirim, Araguapaz, Jussara, and Nova Crixás, all in Goiás state.

FishBase describes the habitat as the shallowest parts of small streams, typically only 3.9–7.9 in deep, with dense aquatic vegetation and an orange clay substrate. The associated palm community is buriti (Mauritia flexuosa), forming the distinctive vereda or buritizal gallery riparian ecosystem of the central Brazilian plateau. Water is clear and mildly acidic: a pH of 5.3 was recorded at collection sites. Depth is rarely more than 3 ft, and the fish are primarily benthopelagic in the surface and mid-water column among plant stems and leaf litter. These are permanent streams rather than seasonal pools, confirming the non-annual life strategy.

Feeding

Like most small rivulines, M. crixas is a micro-predator in the wild, feeding on small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, and zooplankton encountered in and around the dense marginal vegetation of its home streams. Its upturned mouth is adapted to picking prey from the water surface and from the underside of floating plant material.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of small live and frozen foods readily — Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, Daphnia, and finely chopped bloodworm are suitable staples. Good-quality dried micropellets are accepted by established individuals. Frequent small meals suit the species better than single large feedings, maintaining condition and sustaining the regular spawning activity that characterises healthy pairs.

Mating

M. crixas is a non-annual killifish: it inhabits permanent streams and reproduces as a plant or substrate mop spawner rather than burying eggs in seasonal peat. Pairs position themselves among fine-leaved plants, roots, or the fibres of floating spawning mops to deposit small numbers of adhesive eggs, typically five to fifteen per day. Spawning is continuous through the adult reproductive life of healthy individuals rather than occurring in a single seasonal pulse.

The mating embrace is brief: the male courts the female with lateral displays, then aligns alongside her as she releases an egg, which is fertilised immediately and adheres to the nearest plant material or mop fibre. There is no bubble-nest construction, no mouthbrooding, and no territorial defense of a spawning site beyond mild inter-male rivalry. The spawning rate of five to fifteen eggs per day, sustained over weeks and months, produces a modest but steady output well suited to hobbyist rearing on a small scale.

Breeding

Eggs deposited on mops or fine-leaved plants can be collected daily or every few days and transferred to shallow hatching containers with slightly moist or submerged incubation. The IT Rains Fishes database records eggs as amber-coloured, approximately 0.06 in in diameter, with a development period of roughly 14 days in warm water before hatching. No diapause occurs — unlike annual rivulines whose embryos require a dry resting phase, the eggs of M. crixas develop continuously in water.

Fry are tiny at hatching and require appropriately sized first foods: freshly hatched Artemia nauplii are cited as suitable and the young feed readily from the outset. Growth is moderate; the fish reach sexual maturity at roughly four to five months of age. Lifespan in captivity extends to approximately three years under good conditions — considerably longer than annual killies. A 10-litre aquarium is sufficient for a breeding pair, but a tight-fitting cover is essential, as M. crixas, like most killies, will exploit any gap to escape.

In the aquarium

M. crixas is primarily a specialist hobbyist fish, maintained within the killifish-keeping community rather than the general ornamental trade. Its small size — under 1.2 in — means it can be kept and bred in very modest set-ups: a 10-litre species tank for a breeding pair, or a larger planted aquarium housing a small group. Males show mild rivalry but are not destructively aggressive; the species can be kept in mixed-sex groups if the aquarium provides adequate plant cover.

Water chemistry should reflect the mildly acidic, clear conditions of the Goiás streams: a temperature of approximately 72–79 °F, pH around 5.5–6.5, and soft to moderately soft water are appropriate targets. Floating spawning mops — traditional killifish wool mops — or fine-leaved plants such as Java moss provide spawning surfaces and can be checked and harvested every few days. The species is sensitive to poor water quality and benefits from regular small water changes. Because of its restricted range and Vulnerable conservation status, responsible hobbyists document provenance and share pure-line stock through killifish association networks rather than crossing populations.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Melanorivulus crixas as Vulnerable (VU D2) in a 2018 assessment attributed to the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio). The D2 criterion applies when a species' area of occupancy or the number of known locations is so small that it could become Critically Endangered or Extinct within a very short time if a specific threatening event occurs.

The immediate threat to this species is the condition of the vereda wetlands of Goiás. The buriti-palm gallery systems that characterise its habitat are under persistent pressure from agricultural expansion across the Cerrado, particularly soy cultivation and cattle ranching, which drain and degrade the shallow seasonal waterways and small permanent streams the fish requires. Changes to the local hydrology — altered flow regimes, siltation from deforested catchments, and direct stream impoundment — reduce or eliminate the dense aquatic vegetation and clear-water conditions on which M. crixas depends. Its known localities form a small cluster across just a handful of municipalities in Goiás, meaning any localised agricultural conversion event could eliminate a significant fraction of the global population at once.

In the specialist killifish hobby the species is maintained in captivity by collectors affiliated with associations such as the American Killifish Association (AKA), which represents a small but real ex-situ buffer against complete loss. Continued documentation of wild localities, protection of remnant vereda habitats within Goiás, and coordination between ICMBio and the hobby community represent the most realistic conservation pathway for this obscure but irreplaceable micro-endemic.
