The big-tailed lampeye is a small, schooling killifish endemic to the Cuanza (Kwanza) River system and adjacent drainages of Angola, including the historic locality of Lake Sarmento (Marimba). Like all lampeyes it carries the iridescent blue-green supraorbital light organ that gives the group its name, and it reproduces as a continuous egg-layer on fine plants and roots — a non-annual resident of permanent freshwater rather than the seasonal, diapause-dependent annual killifish of drier savannas. Its range is restricted to a corner of west-central Africa that remains under-surveyed, and its relationship to a sister lineage in the Lualaba (Congo) system hints at a richer biogeographic history than the sparse literature yet captures.

Taxonomy & naming

Micropanchax macrurus was described by the Belgian–British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1906, based on material from the Kwanza River system of Angola; the authority is presented in parentheses because the species has since been moved from Boulenger's original genus placement. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong, CAS) records the valid combination as Micropanchax macrurus (Boulenger, 1906).

The genus Lacustricola was erected for a grade of small African lampeye killifish within the family Procatopodidae (African lampeyes, order Cyprinodontiformes). Bragança et al. (2020) reviewed the diversity of southern African Lacustricola and identified M. macrurus as an Angolan endemic of the Kwanza/adjacent Lake Sarmento drainage, noting a sister species in the Lualaba River of the Congo system — a biogeographic link suggesting the Kwanza–Congo watershed was less of a barrier to dispersal in earlier geological periods than it appears today.

The species has been assigned the AKA code and is recognised as a non-seasonal (non-annual) oviparous killifish, placing it in the lampeye ecological guild rather than among the annual soil-spawners that dominate much of the killifish hobby.

This fish was long listed as Lacustricola macrurus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Micropanchax, and the current combination Micropanchax macrurus is followed here.

Morphology

The big-tailed lampeye is a slender, laterally compressed killifish reaching a maximum recorded length of 2 in total length (FishBase). The body plan is typical of the Lacustricola lampeyes: an elongated, fusiform profile, a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface or mid-water feeding, and moderately large scales. The caudal fin is relatively broad and well-developed for the body size — the specific epithet macrurus (Greek: makros, large; oura, tail) explicitly references this trait.

The defining feature shared with all procatopodid lampeyes is the iridescent supraorbital light organ — a patch of specialised tissue above each eye that reflects blue-green or turquoise light, visible even in ordinary room illumination and conspicuous when a school turns in sunlight. Sexual dichromatism is typical for the group: males display more intense iridescence and brighter body colouration than females, which are generally plainer and more rounded in the belly when gravid.

Habitat

Micropanchax macrurus is a freshwater fish of permanent water bodies in west-central Angola. Confirmed localities include the Cuanza (Kwanza) River and minor rivers of the Atlantic slope, Lake Sarmento at Marimba, Vila da Ponte, Kossa, and Lake Quipemba; FishBase also lists possible but unconfirmed occurrences in the Cunene River system and the upper Kasai. The Bragança et al. (2020) review places the type locality firmly in the Kwanza system, draining westward to the Atlantic.

Habitat is described as small rivers, brooks, swamps, and the shallow margins of larger rivers and lakes — broadly benthopelagic and non-migratory. Like other members of the genus, M. macrurus associates with marginal vegetation, riverbanks, and swampy ground within arid to semi-arid savanna landscapes. The AKA profile records typical water chemistry near pH 7 and temperature around 77 °F, consistent with the neutral, warm conditions of Angolan lowland waters.

Being a permanent-water species, it does not experience the seasonal desiccation that drives the diapause cycle of annual killifish in the same region. It inhabits clear, well-oxygenated freshwater rather than the oxygen-depleted, tannin-stained pools in which many annual species breed.

Feeding

The big-tailed lampeye is a micro-predator feeding primarily on small invertebrates. In the wild, lampeyes of this size and build typically target zooplankton, small aquatic insects and their larvae, and other tiny invertebrates at or near the water surface and in mid-water. The upturned mouth is adapted for snatching items at or just below the surface film.

In the aquarium, the species accepts small live and frozen foods readily — daphnia, artemia nauplii, micro-worms, and fine-grade frozen cyclops are appropriate staples. Dry foods of suitable size (micro-pellets, quality flake crushed fine) are taken by most individuals once acclimated. Because the fish is small and the mouth gape modest, food particle size matters; large-formula prepared foods are unsuitable.

Mating

Micropanchax macrurus is a non-annual, continuous egg-layer — its mating system is fundamentally different from the boom-and-bust, die-and-hatch cycle of annual killifish. In permanent-water lampeyes, there is no single discrete spawning season; instead, reproductively ready pairs or small groups spawn opportunistically throughout the year, placing small numbers of adhesive eggs at each encounter.

Male lampeyes use the iridescent supraorbital patch as a visual signal during courtship: a displaying male orients toward the female and manoeuvres to maximise the flash of the light organ, often circling or quivering alongside her. Females are receptive over an extended period. Spawning is pair-based, with the male pressing alongside the female as one to a few eggs are fertilised and deposited at a time — a trickle-spawning strategy common across the procatopodid lampeyes.

Breeding

Breeding follows the continuous plant-spawner model characteristic of procatopodid lampeyes. Fertilised eggs are small, adhesive, and attached individually to fine-leaved aquatic plants, floating roots, or mops of fine synthetic yarn in captivity. The incubation period at typical ambient temperatures (around 75–79 °F) is several weeks; eggs are not prone to diapause and do not require a drying or storage phase.

In the aquarium, a densely planted breeding tank or one furnished with spawning mops allows eggs to be collected periodically before adults consume them. Adults will eat both eggs and fry if given the opportunity, so eggs removed to a small hatching container develop undisturbed. Fry hatch at a small but free-swimming size and can accept infusoria, vinegar eels, or paramecia immediately; they graduate to baby brine shrimp nauplii within the first week. Growth is steady and relatively rapid compared to annual species, and the fish reach sexual maturity at a small fraction of their maximum size.

In the aquarium

The big-tailed lampeye is considered straightforward to maintain relative to many killifish — the AKA profile notes that non-seasonal species like this one are less demanding than annuals, which require replicating a dry-season diapause. A small school of five to ten individuals suits a planted aquarium of 11 US gal or more, with fine-leaved vegetation (Ceratopteris, Myriophyllum, Java moss) providing both cover and spawning substrate. The tank should be tightly covered, as killifish are capable jumpers.

Water parameters of approximately pH 7 and 75–79 °F are a reliable starting point based on the AKA profile; soft to moderately hard, well-filtered, clean water suits the species best. A gentle current from a small sponge or hang-on filter keeps the water oxygenated without stressing these relatively calm-water fish. Tankmates should be chosen carefully — small, peaceful species of similar size work well; fin-nipping barbs or aggressive cichlids are incompatible.

The species remains rare in the hobby compared to more widely distributed lampeyes, reflecting the restricted collecting access to Angola. Hobbyists who do keep it often maintain it in species-only setups to preserve lineage integrity and support breeding programs.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List has not evaluated Micropanchax macrurus as of this writing — the AKA profile records its status as Not Evaluated (NE), while FishBase cross-references a Least Concern assessment from earlier collation efforts. The species' range is tightly circumscribed: it is known from the Cuanza River drainage and a handful of specific lakes and rivers in west-central Angola, with the Bragança et al. (2020) systematic review confirming its endemic status in that basin.

Angola's freshwater fish fauna has been surveyed sporadically due to decades of civil conflict and limited research infrastructure, and many species in the country's Atlantic drainages lack modern population assessments. The general threats facing freshwater fish in Angolan lowland systems — habitat degradation through agricultural land conversion, deforestation of riparian zones, and extraction of water for irrigation — are relevant to M. macrurus even in the absence of species-specific data. The related sister lineage identified in the Lualaba/Congo system underscores that the Kwanza population may represent a genetically distinct, isolated unit deserving separate conservation attention.
