Micropanchax mediolateralis was originally described as Procatopus mediolateralis by Julius Ansorge in 1915, based on specimens from German ichthyological collections gathered in the Guinea–Sierra Leone region of West Africa in the early twentieth century. The authority is conventionally written in parentheses — (Ansorge, 1915) — indicating that the species has since been transferred to a different genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid name as Micropanchax mediolateralis (Ansorge, 1915), placing it within the genus Lacustricola Poll, 1971, in the family Procatopodidae — the African lampeyes.
The family Procatopodidae comprises the African lampeyes, a group of small, schooling, non-annual killifishes found across sub-Saharan Africa from West and Central Africa to the East African Rift lakes. Lacustricola is one of several genera within the family and encompasses a number of diminutive, stream-dwelling species. The specific epithet mediolateralis is Latin, from medius ('middle') and lateralis ('of the side'), likely describing a mid-lateral stripe or colour marking observed in the type series.
The generic name Lacustricola is derived from Latin lacus ('lake') and cola ('inhabitant'), though many members of the genus — including this species — inhabit streams and swamp margins rather than lakes proper. This disconnect between name and ecology is common in taxa described before modern field observation became systematic. No subspecies are currently recognised.
This fish was long listed as Lacustricola mediolateralis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Micropanchax, and the current combination Micropanchax mediolateralis is followed here.
Morphology
Micropanchax mediolateralis is a slender, laterally compressed fish reaching approximately 0.6–0.8 in standard length, making it one of the smallest representatives of the lampeye family. The body form is typical of the procatopodid lampeyes: elongated and torpedo-shaped, with a slightly upturned mouth adapted for feeding at or near the water surface, and a rounded caudal fin. Scales are small and cycloid.
The defining character of the genus and family is the supraorbital photophore — a patch of iridescent, light-reflecting tissue positioned directly above the eye. In Micropanchax mediolateralis this patch glows with a blue-green iridescence that is highly conspicuous in lateral view, especially under directional lighting. The remainder of the body colouration is comparatively cryptic: a translucent olive to straw ground colour, the flanks occasionally showing faint mid-lateral pigmentation consistent with the species epithet. Males tend to show slightly more intense colouration and a more pronounced photophore sheen than females.
Sexual dimorphism is modest. Females are typically fuller-bodied in the abdominal region, particularly when gravid, while males may show faintly more intense fin colouration and a somewhat slimmer silhouette. The difference is subtle compared with many killifish genera and can be difficult to assess in juveniles or fish maintained in suboptimal conditions.
Habitat
Micropanchax mediolateralis inhabits the permanent forest streams, small rivers, and swamp margins of the Guinea–Sierra Leone region of West Africa. This is a zone of lowland tropical moist forest and coastal swamp, characterised by year-round rainfall and the absence of pronounced dry seasons — an environment that supports non-annual killifishes rather than the seasonal puddle and savannah habitats associated with annual egg-laying.
The water in these forest streams tends to be clear to lightly tannin-stained, slow to moderately flowing, with soft to moderately hard chemistry. The cache notes pH 6–7 and temperatures of 64–75 °F — notably cool for a tropical West African lampeye, reflecting the influence of shaded forest canopy, elevation, and upland stream origin. The substrate is typically leaf litter, sand, and fine silt, with dense marginal and submerged vegetation including fine-leaved aquatic and semi-aquatic plants and trailing root masses that provide spawning substrate and refuge.
Little detailed field data has been published on this species specifically; habitat inferences are drawn from conditions recorded for the type locality region and from the ecology of closely related procatopodid species in similar West African forest-stream systems.
Feeding
In the wild, Micropanchax mediolateralis is a micro-predator feeding primarily on small invertebrates in the water column and at the surface film. The diet of lampeyes in comparable forest-stream habitats consists mainly of microcrustaceans (copepods, cladocerans), insect larvae, infusoria, and other zooplankton, with some surface-fallen insects taken opportunistically. The small gape of this species restricts it to correspondingly small prey items.
In captivity the fish accepts a range of fine live and frozen foods: Artemia nauplii, micro-worms, vinegar eels, Daphnia, and cyclops are all suitable. Fine granular or powdered prepared foods formulated for small surface-feeding fishes may be taken, but live and frozen foods are preferred and maintain better condition and colouration. Feeding little and often — two or three small portions per day — suits the species' metabolism better than a single large meal.
Mating
Micropanchax mediolateralis is a non-annual, continuous egg-layer typical of the procatopodid lampeyes. Unlike the annual killifishes of seasonal pools, this species lives in permanent water and spawns repeatedly throughout the year rather than in a single all-or-nothing reproductive event timed to the drying of a pool. The photophore above the eye plays a central role in conspecific recognition and courtship: males display laterally to females, exhibiting the glowing supraorbital patch alongside fin-spreading and body shimmering in a sequence characteristic of the family.
Mating takes place in open water among fine vegetation, roots, or leaf litter. The male courts an individual female, and after a brief display the pair press together momentarily as a small number of eggs and sperm are released simultaneously. Procatopodid lampeyes typically deposit only a few eggs at a time in each spawning event, repeating the act many times over days and weeks — a strategy of low-investment, continuous reproduction rather than mass spawning. This trickle-spawning mode is well suited to permanent-stream habitats where fry survival does not depend on racing against seasonal desiccation.
Breeding
Fertilised eggs are adhesive and small, attached individually to fine-leaved plants, moss, roots, or fibrous substrate. The incubation period at temperatures in the 68–75 °F range is typically 10–14 days for procatopodid lampeyes of similar size, after which miniature fry hatch and begin swimming immediately, requiring first foods of the smallest available size — infusoria, rotifers (Brachionus), or commercial fry powder — before graduating to Artemia nauplii after one to two weeks.
In a densely planted aquarium adults will spawn continuously with little intervention; a portion of eggs and fry survive if adequate plant cover is provided. For deliberate breeding, the recommended approach is to condition a small group of adults with varied live foods, then transfer them to a separate, heavily planted breeding tank. Eggs may be collected on spawning mops or java moss clumps and incubated separately to protect them from predation. Fry grow slowly at first and must be kept in warm, clean, well-oxygenated water free of larger tankmates. The species does not practise parental care of any kind and will consume eggs and small fry if given the opportunity.
In the aquarium
Micropanchax mediolateralis is a specialist fish, rarely available outside killifish association networks, and best suited to experienced hobbyists comfortable with the requirements of small procatopodid lampeyes. It should be kept as a group — a minimum of eight to ten individuals allows natural schooling behaviour and reduces individual stress — in a mature, heavily planted aquarium of 11–16 US gal or more. The tank must be tightly covered; like most small killifishes it is an accomplished jumper.
Water conditions should replicate the cool, clean forest-stream environment: temperature 68–75 °F, pH 6.0–7.0, soft to moderately hard, and well filtered without strong currents. Good oxygenation and regular partial water changes are important; the species is intolerant of accumulated organic waste. Tankmates, if any, must be small, peaceful, and comparable in size — nano fish such as small rasboras, pygmy corydoras, or other micro-killifishes are appropriate; larger or boisterous species will stress or outcompete this tiny fish for food.
The iridescent photophore is best appreciated under moderate, slightly angled lighting in a well-planted tank with a dark substrate. Colouration intensifies in settled, comfortable fish and fades rapidly under stress. Because of its rarity in the trade and its small size, it does not appear in mainstream retail channels; acquisition is typically through killifish society members, studbook exchanges, or specialist breeders.
Conservation
Micropanchax mediolateralis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This gap in assessment data is itself a conservation concern: the species is a narrow-range West African endemic, known from the Guinea–Sierra Leone region, in a zone that has experienced substantial forest loss and watershed degradation over the past half-century. The Upper Guinea forest block — one of the world's most biodiverse freshwater regions — has been severely reduced by logging, agricultural conversion, and charcoal production, with the streams and swamp margins that support forest-dependent killifishes directly affected by siltation, temperature rise, and reduced dry-season flow.
The fish's very small size and restricted range make it potentially vulnerable to localised extinction without the event ever being detected. No dedicated population surveys have been published, and occurrence records in global biodiversity databases remain sparse. In the absence of an IUCN assessment, conservation planners cannot easily flag the species for targeted protection.
In practice, the best insurance for taxa like this is the specialist killifish hobby: dedicated breeders maintain captive populations of obscure West African lampeyes that would otherwise disappear from human knowledge entirely. Killifish associations in Europe and North America have historically served as an unofficial ark for rare procatopodids, and Micropanchax mediolateralis, if it persists in any collection, is likely held through exactly such networks. Formal survey work in Guinea and Sierra Leone stream systems, combined with IUCN assessment, is needed to establish whether wild populations remain viable.
