A diminutive, jewel-coloured killifish from the far southwest of Sierra Leone, Scriptaphyosemion fredrodi is one of the least-known members of a genus of non-annual West African plant-spawners. Described in 1980 by Vandersmissen, Etzel, and Berkenkamp, it is endemic to a narrow coastal corner of the country and is known from shallow, seasonally fluctuating pools and swampy creek margins in the lowland forest and savanna transition zone. Like other members of Scriptaphyosemion, it deposits adhesive eggs on plant material and submerged mops rather than burying eggs in substrate; unlike annual killifishes, its eggs develop without diapause and the fish are relatively long-lived. The IUCN assessed the species as Data Deficient in 2019, a status reflecting the near-total absence of survey data from its restricted native range rather than any confidence in its security.

Scriptaphyosemion fredrodi was described in 1980 by Vandersmissen, Etzel, and Berkenkamp; the authority appears in parentheses, indicating the species has been moved from the genus in which it was originally placed. FishBase (Froese & Pauly, eds.) records the current valid combination as Scriptaphyosemion fredrodi (Vandersmissen, Etzel & Berkenkamp, 1980). The species is sometimes encountered in older literature and hobbyist records under an alternative spelling, fredrici, but the FishBase-treated name fredrodi is the form recognised in the most recent database literature.

The genus Scriptaphyosemion was erected by Radda & Pürzl in 1987 to accommodate a cluster of small, non-annual West African killifishes that had previously been lumped within the broadly defined genus Aphyosemion. The genus name combines the Latin scripta (written, marked) with Aphyosemion, the parent genus name derived from the Greek aphyē (small fish) and sēmeion (mark, sign) — a reference to the elaborate reticulate markings that characterise the males of most species in the group. The genus ranges from Guinea south through Sierra Leone and Liberia into Côte d'Ivoire, its species inhabiting coastal lowland forest streams and associated seasonal wetlands.

The specific epithet fredrodi honours Fred Wright and Rod Roberts, British aquarists and collectors who were active in West African killifish exploration during the 1970s — a common naming convention in the killifish world, where field collectors who bring material back for scientific description are frequently commemorated in the species names they help establish.

Morphology

Scriptaphyosemion fredrodi is a small killifish; FishBase records a maximum standard length of 1.7 in for males, placing it among the smaller species of the genus. The body form follows the typical Scriptaphyosemion plan: moderately slender and laterally compressed, with a slightly upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding. The dorsal profile is gently arched; the ventral line is nearly straight.

Sexual dichromatism is strongly marked, as in other members of the genus. Males carry an intricate pattern of reddish-orange to violet spots and streaks on a blue-green or olive-grey ground colour, with the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins extending and intensifying this colouration into bordered, patterned extensions; dominant, well-conditioned males are among the most vivid of West African killifishes. Females, as is typical throughout Scriptaphyosemion, are cryptically coloured — plain olive-brown or yellowish with largely clear or lightly spotted fins — and are generally somewhat smaller than males.

The fins of males are rounded to pointed, with the caudal fin often showing distinct edge colouration. No described morphological characters distinguish S. fredrodi sharply from all congeners in prose; detailed meristic and colouration data from the original 1980 description and subsequent killifish literature are the reference for formal identification.

Habitat

Scriptaphyosemion fredrodi is endemic to southwestern Sierra Leone — a narrow coastal band at the southernmost extension of the Upper Guinean rainforest and its transition into the Guinea savanna zone. FishBase records the species from temporary pools in dry riverbeds and swampy areas with small creeks, confirming that the habitat is seasonally variable: water bodies that may be substantially reduced or structurally altered by dry-season drawdown, even if they do not desiccate entirely. This distinguishes it ecologically from purely permanent-water forest-stream killies, but the species is nonetheless treated as a non-annual, since its reproductive biology (plant-spawning with water-incubated eggs) is incompatible with a true annual strategy requiring full desiccation.

Water chemistry recorded for the species and its habitat is slightly acidic and soft: FishBase gives pH 6.3–6.5 and temperatures of 75–81 °F in field conditions, with aquarium recommendations of 73–81 °F. These parameters are consistent with the laterite and forest-soil drainage typical of coastal Sierra Leone, where streams and pools tend to be low in dissolved salts and modestly tannin-stained from the leaf litter of the surrounding vegetation. The shallow, vegetated margins of small creeks and swampy pools provide the fine-leaved plant material and surface-film habitat that the species uses for spawning and cover.

Feeding

Scriptaphyosemion fredrodi is a micro-predator, consistent with all members of the genus. In its natural habitat it hunts the small invertebrates available at the surface and in the water column of shallow forest pools and creek margins: small aquatic insects and their larvae, microcrustaceans such as Daphnia and Cyclops, fallen terrestrial invertebrates, and other zooplankton. The slightly upturned mouth is a typical killi adaptation for surface-film feeding, allowing efficient capture of insects caught on or near the water surface.

In captivity the species responds well to a varied diet of live and frozen invertebrate foods. Daphnia, Cyclops, Artemia nauplii, bloodworm (Chironomus), and micro-worm are all appropriate; high-quality small dried foods may be accepted by well-settled individuals. As with other small killies, nutritional variety — particularly the regular inclusion of live or frozen prey — maintains colouration and reproductive conditioning better than dried food alone.

Mating

Scriptaphyosemion fredrodi is a non-annual, plant-spawning killifish. It deposits adhesive eggs on fine-leaved aquatic plants, submerged roots, and the fibres of floating spawning mops rather than burying eggs in the substrate, and its eggs develop in water without entering diapause. This mode is consistent with the genus as a whole: the British Killifish Association notes that congener S. roloffi — among the most-studied species in the genus — spawns on floating mops or peat bottom-carpeting, with adhesive eggs that hatch in the water without any drying phase. The pattern holds across Scriptaphyosemion: these are permanent- or near-permanent-water fish whose reproduction runs on continuous incubation rather than the diapausing strategy of annual killifishes.

Spawning is pair-based and extended over time. Males display laterally to females, spreading their fins to exhibit their colouration; when a female responds, the pair align alongside a plant stem or mop fibre and deposit one to a few adhesive eggs per embrace. Multiple embraces over days and weeks gradually accumulate a clutch. Eggs are small, transparent, and adhesive, clinging to the spawning substrate where they are left without parental attention.

Breeding

In the aquarium, Scriptaphyosemion fredrodi is bred using the same technique standard for non-annual West African killies: a pair or small group (one male, two or more females) is conditioned on live and frozen foods in a small, densely planted or mop-furnished aquarium with soft, slightly acidic water at 73–79 °F. Java moss, fine-leaved plants, or nylon spawning mops provide the egg-deposition substrate. Eggs are collected every few days — either by removing the mop or by searching the plant material — and transferred to a shallow hatching container with similar water chemistry.

Unlike annual killifish eggs, which require a dry-storage interval, Scriptaphyosemion eggs must remain submerged throughout incubation. At the temperatures typical of the species' native range, hatching occurs within two to three weeks. The killi.co.uk profile for congener S. cauveti notes that the genus can be prolific when well-settled and that eggs are very small and easy to overlook in mops; careful inspection during collection is worthwhile. Fry require the smallest available live foods — infusoria or micro-worm — before graduating to newly hatched Artemia nauplii. Growth is steady, and fish reach sexual maturity within a few months. Adults are comparatively long-lived, as is normal for non-annual killies, with a captive lifespan considerably longer than that of annual species.

In the aquarium

Scriptaphyosemion fredrodi circulates primarily within specialist killifish societies and hobbyist networks rather than the general ornamental trade. A small aquarium of 8–13 US gal is adequate for a breeding pair or trio; the tank should be tightly covered — all killifishes are accomplished jumpers, and even a small gap at the surface is a potential escape route. Dense planting with fine-leaved species such as Java moss or Ceratophyllum, supplemented with floating mops, replicates the shallow, vegetated pool margins the species occupies in nature and provides both spawning substrate and line-of-sight cover.

Water should be kept soft and slightly acidic: pH 6.3–6.5, low hardness, temperature 73–81 °F, with regular small water changes to maintain freshness. These parameters closely match the field chemistry recorded by FishBase for this species' natural habitat. Filtration should be gentle — a small sponge filter is appropriate — as the species is not adapted to strong currents. Males are not reported as unusually aggressive, but keeping more females than males reduces competition. The species is best maintained in a species aquarium or with other small, non-aggressive fish sharing compatible water-chemistry requirements.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Scriptaphyosemion fredrodi as Data Deficient (DD) in 2019, with the assessment attributed to Philipe Lalèyè (University of Abomey-Calavi). The DD status is not reassuring: for a narrowly endemic fish from coastal southwestern Sierra Leone — a country whose coastal and forest wetlands have been heavily degraded by agricultural expansion, artisanal mining (particularly diamond and gold operations), and infrastructural development — the absence of data does not imply the absence of threats.

The species' known habitat of temporary pools and small swampy creeks in the Sierra Leone coastal zone places it squarely in the type of freshwater system most vulnerable to seasonal agriculture and drainage. Deforestation across the Upper Guinean forest belt has accelerated riparian degradation in exactly the zone where the species is distributed. Non-annual killies that depend on vegetated, chemically stable pool and stream margins — rather than burying eggs to bridge dry seasons — are particularly sensitive to habitat alteration, since a crash in the adult population cannot be buffered by a soil egg bank the way an annual killi's can. Targeted field surveys to establish the species' current distribution, population size, and the condition of its habitat are the necessary first step toward a meaningful reassessment. In the meantime, captive breeding within killifish society networks provides a modest but genuine insurance function.
