Taxonomy & naming
Brachyhypopomus diazi was described by Agustín Fernández-Yépez in 1972 and belongs to the family Hypopomidae, the bluntnose knifefishes, within the order Gymnotiformes — the New-World electric knifefishes. Like every gymnotiform, it is a bony fish but an unusual one: the order is defined by an electric organ and a long ribbon-like anal fin rather than by the fins and body plan of a typical aquarium fish, and it is only distantly related to the rest of the freshwater fish sold in the hobby. The Asian featherback and clown knifefishes (Chitala, Notopterus) share the common name "knifefish" but belong to an entirely different order and are not close relatives; the resemblance is convergent body shape, not kinship.
The species epithet honours María Isabel "Betty" Diaz, Fernández-Yépez's secretary at the time of the description. Brachyhypopomus is a large genus of small, cryptically coloured pulse-type electric fish, and several of its species — B. diazi among them — are little studied outside the original description and subsequent museum-based taxonomic work. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name.
This fish was long listed as Brachyhypopomus diazae; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes now treats that name as a synonym of Brachyhypopomus diazi, the valid name followed here.
Morphology
Brachyhypopomus diazi is a small, soft-bodied fish reaching about 6.9 in in total length, modest even by the standards of the bluntnose knifefishes. Like other Hypopomidae it lacks a dorsal fin and a distinct tail fin; the body tapers to a blunt, rounded snout rather than the long probing snout of the sand knifefishes (Rhamphichthys, Gymnorhamphichthys), and propulsion comes from undulations of a long anal fin running along most of the underside, letting the fish move forward or backward with equal ease. The skin is scaleless and the colouring is cryptic — subdued mottled tones suited to hiding among leaf litter and roots rather than to display.
Running the length of the body is the electric organ, paired with rows of tuberous electroreceptors across the skin that read the field it generates. Brachyhypopomus produces a pulsed, biphasic electric organ discharge: a brief headward current (P1, head positive) immediately followed by a tailward current (P2, tail positive), repeated as a train of clicks rather than a continuous wave. Across the genus, discharge amplitude tracks body length in both sexes and discharge duration tracks reproductive condition in males, so the signal itself carries information about the individual producing it.
Habitat
Brachyhypopomus diazi is known from a narrow range in northwestern Venezuela — the Tocuyo River to the Alpargatón River, in the northern Llanos of the Orinoco basin. This is a single-drainage endemic rather than a widely distributed species, and its range should be treated as limited and specific rather than continental.
Bluntnose knifefishes as a group favour lentic and slow-flowing habitats — streams, swamps and seasonal floodplains — rather than fast open channels, sheltering by day among leaf litter, roots and submerged vegetation and becoming active as cryptically pigmented nocturnal hunters after dark. That darkness, and the general murk of floodplain and swamp water, is exactly the environment in which an electric sense outperforms eyesight, and the pulsed discharge of B. diazi and its relatives is built for electrolocation and electrocommunication in low-visibility water rather than for open, well-lit habitats.
Feeding
As with other Hypopomidae, Brachyhypopomus diazi is presumed to be a nocturnal predator of small aquatic invertebrates, hunting by electrolocation in the dark among leaf litter and root tangles rather than by sight. Species-specific feeding data for B. diazi itself is not documented in the available literature, but the genus as a whole is characterised as taking insect larvae and other small invertebrates from sediment and cover, detected by the way they distort the fish's weak electric field.
In the aquarium, bluntnose knifefishes of this kind should be offered small meaty foods after dark — bloodworm, blackworm and similarly sized frozen fare — reflecting their nocturnal, soft-prey diet in the wild; there is no basis in the sourced material for feeding them anything larger or more specific.
Mating
Courtship in Brachyhypopomus, as in other pulse-type gymnotiforms, is thought to run substantially through the electric organ discharge rather than visual display: discharge amplitude and duration shift with reproductive state and are modulated during social encounters, including interactions with dominant individuals and, in related genera, during courtship and spawning. For B. diazi specifically no courtship behaviour has been documented, and this should be read as an inference from the genus and family rather than an observed account of this species.
Breeding
Breeding in the Hypopomidae is poorly documented across the family, and Brachyhypopomus diazi is no exception — its breeding biology is data sparse. Where breeding has been recorded in the family, these are small egg-layers that scatter or deposit eggs among leaf litter, roots or sand, generally around the wet season, with little or no parental care afterwards. There is no aquarium breeding record for B. diazi to draw on, and nothing here should be read as a protocol; it is a species that has, as far as the sourced literature shows, never been reliably spawned in captivity.
In the aquarium
Brachyhypopomus diazi is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever seen in the trade, so the following follows from its biology and from the care needs of bluntnose knifefishes generally rather than from a body of hobbyist experience with this species. Being scaleless, it would need great care with medications — no copper-based treatments, and other doses reduced — and would be sensitive to ammonia and nitrate, requiring mature, stable filtration. As a small, soft-bodied, nocturnal fish it would need a dim, quiet tank with a soft substrate and generous cover of leaf litter, roots or fine plants to shelter in by day, plus tankmates too large to be preyed on and not aggressive enough to harass a delicate, retiring fish.
Given the total absence of an aquarium track record and its status as a narrow-range wild endemic, any specimen reaching the hobby is best regarded as a fish for a specialist prepared to replicate soft, warm, dim Llanos floodplain water rather than a beginner's community fish.
Conservation
Brachyhypopomus diazi is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, last evaluated in 2020. That assessment sits alongside a genuinely narrow known range — the Tocuyo to Alpargatón river system in the northern Llanos of Venezuela — so the Least Concern status reflects the absence of documented decline rather than a wide, resilient distribution; single-basin endemics of this kind are generally the ones most exposed to habitat change, water abstraction and pollution within their limited range, even where no specific threat has yet been quantified for this species.
