Taxonomy & naming
Heterophallus echeagarayi was described by the Mexican ichthyologist José Álvarez del Villar in 1952, from material collected in the Río Michol in the state of Chiapas, in south-eastern Mexico. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the species as valid within the genus Gambusia, in the family Poeciliidae and subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers that also include the guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails. The original combination is conventionally cited with the describing authority in parentheses, reflecting later generic placement, and the species sits among the large radiation of small Central American and southern Mexican mosquitofishes.
The genus Gambusia is a large, taxonomically difficult group of small toothcarps distributed across the southern United States, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Many of its members are narrowly endemic to single rivers, springs or drainage systems, and H. echeagarayi is one of these restricted-range forms, recorded essentially from the Michol system of Chiapas. The species honours Luis Echeagaray Bablot (died 1984), a water-resources manager for south-eastern Mexico who facilitated Álvarez's field collecting; the genus name derives from the Cuban word gambusino, an expression from the phrase "fishing for gambusinos" — meaning to catch nothing — a wry comment on the diminutive size of these fishes.
This fish was long listed as Gambusia echeagarayi; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Heterophallus, and the current combination Heterophallus echeagarayi is followed here.
Morphology
Heterophallus echeagarayi is a very small fish, in keeping with its genus. Published figures give a maximum total length of roughly 1.1 in for males and unsexed specimens, with females reaching somewhat larger sizes, to about 1.4 in — the same female-larger pattern seen throughout the livebearing poeciliids. The body is the typical mosquitofish shape: elongate but compact, with an upturned mouth suited to feeding at and just below the surface, and modest, rounded fins. Detailed published descriptions of its pigmentation and meristics are sparse, and much of what can be said draws on the general morphology of small Gambusia.
As in all Gambusia, the sexes differ in a way that is diagnostic of the family rather than gaudy. Males are smaller and slimmer and carry a gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin, used to deliver sperm to the female. Females are larger and deeper-bodied, lack the gonopodium, and when carrying young show a darkened gravid region toward the rear of the abdomen. Colour in this group tends to be subdued — silvery to olive or grey, sometimes with faint markings — rather than the bright spotting of a guppy, so the species is recognised more by its range and gonopodial structure than by any showy livery.
Habitat
The species is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of running waters, recorded from the Río Michol and adjacent streams in Chiapas, in south-eastern Mexico — a narrow distribution within a single river system that makes it, on present evidence, endemic to that part of the country. It is a fish of warm tropical lowland streams rather than of lakes or large rivers, occupying the kind of small-water habitat favoured by mosquitofishes generally.
The water it inhabits is warm and moderately hard, neutral to slightly alkaline. Recorded conditions span roughly 75–81 °F, a pH of about 7.2 to 7.8, and a hardness in the range of about 8 to 20 dH. These are typical of the spring-fed and stream habitats of the region. Because the published ecological record for the species is thin, its precise habitat preferences — substrate, flow, vegetation, seasonal change — are not well documented, and this gap is part of why its conservation status remains unresolved. What can be said is that it is a small surface-oriented fish of warm, neutral-to-alkaline Chiapas streams with a strikingly limited known range.
Feeding
Heterophallus echeagarayi is a small omnivorous micro-predator, sitting at a trophic level of about 3.2 — the level of a fish that takes mostly small animal prey while also consuming some plant and detrital material. Like its congeners it would be expected to feed on small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae (mosquitofishes are named for their appetite for mosquito larvae), micro-crustaceans, and incidental algae and detritus taken from the surface film and the upper water column, where its upturned mouth is best suited to feed.
No detailed diet study specific to this species appears in the accessible literature, so its feeding is described here from genus-level biology rather than from direct observation of H. echeagarayi itself. In broad terms it is an opportunistic feeder that takes whatever suitably sized prey is available, with the balance between animal and plant matter shifting according to season and habitat. This generalist, surface-feeding habit is one of the traits that makes mosquitofishes so successful in small, variable waters.
Mating
Reproduction in Heterophallus echeagarayi is internal and viviparous, as in all members of the genus and the wider poeciliid family. Fertilisation takes place inside the female: the male uses his gonopodium, the modified anal fin, to transfer sperm during brief copulation. Gambusia males typically rely less on elaborate courtship than the showier poeciliids and more on persistent pursuit and rapid copulation attempts, and females of many Gambusia species can store viable sperm internally, allowing successive broods to be produced from a single mating.
Species-specific behavioural data for H. echeagarayi are not available in the published record, so its mating system is inferred from genus-level biology rather than directly observed. What is firmly established is the mechanism — internal fertilisation via the gonopodium, with no egg-laying — which is the defining reproductive feature of the livebearers and the trait that distinguishes mosquitofishes from the egg-scattering toothcarps with which they are sometimes confused.
Breeding
Heterophallus echeagarayi is a livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. Published figures indicate a gestation of about 28 days, after which the female produces a brood of roughly 5 to 20 young. The developing embryos are lecithotrophic — nourished by yolk rather than by a true placenta — which is the typical pattern for Gambusia and contrasts with the matrotrophic, placenta-like provisioning and superfetation seen in some other poeciliid lineages. There is no published evidence of superfetation (the simultaneous carrying of broods at different stages) in this species.
The newborn fry emerge as fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed immediately. As in mosquitofishes generally, there is no parental care, and adults — including the mother — will readily prey on their own young, so in nature the fry depend on cover and dense microhabitat to survive. The species is rated as having high resilience with a population doubling time of under fifteen months, reflecting the rapid maturation and steady, repeated brood production characteristic of small Gambusia. This combination of live birth, frequent broods and quick growth is exactly what allows these fishes to maintain populations in small, fluctuating waters.
In the aquarium
Heterophallus echeagarayi is essentially absent from the ornamental aquarium trade. It is a small, plainly coloured, narrowly distributed Mexican mosquitofish of interest chiefly to specialist livebearer keepers and conservation-minded hobbyists rather than to the general fishkeeper, and reliable husbandry accounts specific to the species are not available. Any keeping notes therefore rest on the general requirements of small Gambusia rather than on documented experience with this fish.
On that genus-level basis, a species like this would be expected to be hardy and undemanding, suited to a well-planted aquarium with gentle flow and the warm, neutral-to-alkaline, moderately hard water of its native Chiapas streams — broadly 75–81 °F, pH around 7.2 to 7.8, and moderate hardness. As with most Gambusia, males can harass females and one another, so a group with females outnumbering males reduces stress, and dense planting gives fry a chance to survive. Given the species' restricted wild range and Data Deficient status, the responsible course for any keeper who encounters it is to treat it as a fish of conservation value — maintained in dedicated, well-documented lines and never released into local waters.
Conservation
Heterophallus echeagarayi is assessed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 28 August 2018. The Data Deficient category means that the available information on the species' population size, distribution and trends is insufficient to judge its risk of extinction — it is neither a confirmation that the fish is secure nor a finding that it is threatened, but a statement that the evidence base is too thin to decide. The species is recorded as endemic to Mexico, in the state of Chiapas.
For a narrowly distributed, single-system endemic, that uncertainty is itself a concern. Small-range freshwater fishes of southern Mexico are vulnerable to the same pressures that affect their habitats — water extraction, pollution, land-use change and the introduction of non-native species — and a fish known from essentially one river has little margin if its stream is degraded. The appropriate response is targeted field survey to establish where the species still occurs and in what numbers, the information that would allow a future reassessment to move it out of the Data Deficient category one way or the other. Until then, H. echeagarayi remains a reminder of how much basic natural-history work is still outstanding for the smaller, less glamorous livebearers.
