Taxonomy & naming
Phalloptychus iheringii was described in 1889 by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger. The specific epithet honours Hermann von Ihering (1850–1930), the German-born naturalist who spent much of his career in Brazil and directed the Museu Paulista in São Paulo, playing a foundational role in the documentation of Brazilian zoology during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes lists Phalloptychus iheringii (Boulenger, 1889) as a valid species within the family Poeciliidae.
Phalloptychus is a small genus of two described species — this one and P. januarius — both restricted to coastal drainages of southeastern Brazil. The genus sits within the New World livebearing subfamily Poeciliinae, related to but distinct from the more familiar aquarium genera Poecilia and Phalloceros.
