Balitora tiandengensis was described by You Nong, Yuan Fang, Jin-Yue Li, Qiu-Jun Wei, Chuan-Gui Xu and Gui-Yuan Wei — researchers affiliated chiefly with the Guangxi Institute of Chinese Medicine & Pharmaceutical Science — in a 2026 paper in ZooKeys (issue 1267, pages 373–390, published 30 January 2026); the Catalog of Fishes credits the species-level authorship to Nong & Wei within that larger author list. The description rests on both morphological and molecular evidence: phylogenetic trees built from 70 sequences spanning two mitochondrial genes (COI, cytochrome b) and three nuclear genes (RAG1, IRBP, EGR2B) recover the new species as an independent evolutionary lineage separate from other members of the genus.
The genus Balitora was established by J.E. Gray in 1830 and now contains more than 30 valid species across South and Southeast Asia, placed in the family Balitoridae, the hillstream or river loaches. This description is notable for another reason: the paper's own reference list cites two other recently described cave-dwelling Balitora — B. anlongensis (Luo et al. 2023), described as "the first cavefish species of the genus Balitora" from Guizhou Province, and B. dehouensis (Lei et al. 2025a), from a cave system in the upper Red River of southwestern China — suggesting that karst-cave Balitora diversity across southern China is only now being uncovered by targeted field survey, with B. tiandengensis as the latest addition to that emerging pattern. The Catalog of Fishes lists the species as valid, with a holotype (GXMI WGY2024121901) and four paratypes (GXMI WGY2024121902–905) from the type cave.
Morphology
Balitora tiandengensis is diagnosed from other members of its genus by a specific set of fin-ray counts: a dorsal fin of iii-9, an anal fin of i-6, a pectoral fin of v-12, and nineteen branched caudal-fin rays. Its lips are relatively thin and simple, lacking the complex folding or thickening seen in some congeners; the upper and lower lips connect at the corner of the mouth, the upper lip bears a row of inconspicuous papillae, and the lower lip is thin. Fin proportions, expressed as a percentage of standard length, further separate it: a long dorsal fin (16.7–19.4% SL); a short anal fin (15.0–16.7% SL) with a truncated distal margin, positioned close to the anus and well forward of the caudal-fin base; a pectoral fin at 18.4–20.5% SL; and a moderately developed, rounded pelvic fin at 15.1–16.7% SL. The anus sits 72.5–73.3% of the distance from the rear of the pelvic-fin base to the anal-fin origin.
No absolute body length in millimetres was accessible in the portion of the description consulted here — only these proportional and meristic characters. Notably, the accessible abstract does not report any reduction of the eyes or loss of pigmentation, the classic troglomorphic adaptations seen in many obligate cave fish; on the evidence available, this reads as a cave-associated species rather than a confirmed troglobite, though that distinction was not addressed directly in the material consulted. Habitat
The type locality — and, as far as the Catalog of Fishes records, the species' entire known distribution — is a karst cave near Duoru Village, Dukang Town, Tiandeng County, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of southern China, at 1788 ft elevation. The Catalog of Fishes records its habitat simply as freshwater; no description of the cave's water flow, temperature, light regime or substrate was accessible in the sources consulted for this article.
The paper's reference list cites a general text on cave biology (Culver & Pipan, The Biology of Caves and Other Subterranean Habitats), consistent with the authors situating this species within the broader ecology of karst subterranean streams — environments typically characterized by constant darkness, stable year-round temperature and groundwater-fed flow. Whether B. tiandengensis is restricted to this single cave system or occurs more widely in the surrounding karst is not documented.
Feeding

Balitora species in open streams are generally aufwuchs and biofilm grazers, rasping algae and diatoms from rock surfaces — but algae and diatoms depend on light to grow, and a population confined to a lightless cave interior would not have access to that food source in the way a surface-stream relative does. Beyond its formal taxonomic diagnosis, essentially nothing about its ecology or reproductive biology has been published, which is unsurprising for a species known only from a handful of type specimens collected from a single cave.

Balitoridae as a family are typically egg-scatterers, releasing eggs among stones and gravel in flowing water with no parental care, and B. tiandengensis is presumed to follow this general family pattern — but this is inference, not observation, and it has not been confirmed for this species or its cave habitat specifically.
In the aquarium
Balitora tiandengensis has no history in the aquarium trade and, given its apparent restriction to a single karst cave system, is not the kind of species likely to enter the hobby. Even the general hillstream-loach care template — cool, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water over smooth cobbles, with a mature biofilm surface to graze — applies with less confidence here than for most Balitora, since a cave population may rely on very different water conditions and food sources than the surface streams that template describes. Honest guidance for this species stops at: nothing about its husbandry needs is documented, and it should not be assumed to be a straightforward hillstream-tank fish.
Conservation
Balitora tiandengensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status beyond Not Evaluated, typical for a species described only in 2026. Its documented range is a single karst cave system near Duoru Village in Tiandeng County, Guangxi — an inherently high-risk pattern for any species, since single-cave endemics are exceptionally vulnerable to groundwater pollution, cave tourism disturbance, quarrying and local hydrological change, even before any formal population assessment exists.
