Taxonomy & naming
The dwarf loach was described by Kim and Lee in 1995 and placed in its own monotypic genus, Kichulchoia, within the family Cobitidae — the spined and pond loaches. It has no close aquarium-trade relatives sharing its genus; Kichulchoia is endemic in the fullest sense, both taxonomically and geographically, existing as a single species restricted to a tiny corner of South Korea.
Genetic work on the species (mitochondrial genome sequencing and population-genetics studies) has confirmed its distinct, endemic status and found notably high genetic diversity for a fish with such a small range — a combination that is scientifically striking but does not lessen its conservation vulnerability.
