Cobitis longicorpus is a small, coldwater spined loach known only from a handful of river systems in southern Korea. It belongs to the family Cobitidae — the true spined and pond loaches — and like its relatives carries an erectile spine tucked in a groove beneath the eye, ready to flick out if a predator (or a careless net) closes in. It is a specialist of slow-moving, sandy streams, spending its days half-buried in the substrate and sieving small invertebrates from the grain, and it has essentially no history in the hobby: almost nothing is documented about keeping it, and it has never been bred in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis longicorpus was described in 1976 by Kim, Choi & Nalbant as part of the wave of taxonomic work that separated Korea's endemic spined loaches from the broader Old-World genus Cobitis and, later, from the once-inclusive Niwaella and Kichulchoia complex. The genus Iksookimia was itself erected to house a cluster of Korean and East Asian species with distinctive body proportions and colour patterning, and the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — retains Cobitis longicorpus in that genus and in family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches.

A 2025 peer-reviewed study (Choi et al., published in Zoosystematics and Evolution) revisited the group and confirmed C. longicorpus as the sister species to the more recently described Iksookimia hugowolfeldi, with the two separated by paleo-drainage history and river-capture events across the southern Korean Peninsula. That work reinforces the species' narrow endemism rather than revising its name, so the combination used here — Cobitis longicorpus — stands as currently valid.

Morphology

Like every member of Cobitidae, Cobitis longicorpus carries the family's signature feature: an erectile suborbital spine, folded into a groove beneath the eye and flicked out when the fish is threatened or handled. Its skin is effectively naked, covered only in tiny, deeply embedded scales, which makes it — like other true loaches — sensitive to skin damage and to strong medications.

The species reaches a modest maximum length, reported at roughly 4.3–5.1 in depending on whether standard or total length is measured. It has the elongate, sub-cylindrical body typical of sand-dwelling Cobitidae, an underslung mouth ringed with barbels for probing the substrate, and cryptic mottled patterning that blends into a sandy stream bed — camouflage rather than display colouration, in keeping with a fish that spends much of its life partly buried.

Habitat

This is a Korean endemic, known from the Seomjin River (its type locality) and the Nakdong River system, along with other streams of the southeastern Korean Peninsula. It occupies slow-moving stretches of these rivers over soft, sandy substrates, where it can bury and sift rather than fight a strong current.

Critically, Cobitis longicorpus is a coldwater species, not a tropical one. It is documented living and thriving at 64–72 °F (64–72°F) — temperate river temperatures that track the Korean Peninsula's seasonal climate — over sandy bottoms in moderately hard, near-neutral water (around pH 7.0–7.7). This places it firmly alongside other temperate Cobitidae such as Cobitis and the dojo loach Misgurnus, and well outside the warm, soft-acid range that suits tropical Southeast Asian loaches.

Feeding

Cobitis longicorpus is a sand-sifting benthic micropredator. In the wild it forages through soft sediment for chironomid (midge) larvae and other small benthic invertebrates, using its barbeled snout to probe the grain and its slender body to bury in when resting or hiding.

Where it has been kept, it has accepted a varied diet of sinking dried foods alongside live and frozen fare such as Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm — all standard fare for a small invertebrate-feeding loach. As with any obligate sand-sifter, a soft substrate is not optional: without fine sand to work through, this species cannot feed or behave naturally.

Mating

Little to nothing has been documented about courtship or spawning behaviour in Cobitis longicorpus specifically. Data on this narrowly endemic, little-studied species is sparse outside of taxonomic and distributional papers, and no aquarium or field account of its reproductive behaviour appears to exist in the available literature.

Breeding

As a member of the spined & pond loach family Cobitidae, C. longicorpus would be expected to scatter adhesive eggs among plants or vegetation, typically in spring — the pattern documented in several of its temperate relatives, including Cobitis, Sabanejewia, and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus, some of which have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers. There is no parental care in this breeding style.

However, Cobitis longicorpus itself has not been bred in captivity, and its specific breeding requirements are unknown. This is an honest gap rather than an oversight: the species has very limited documentation in the hobby, and no verified spawning — home or commercial — has been recorded.

In the aquarium

Cobitis longicorpus is a specialist fish with almost no track record in the hobby, and what little is known points to a coldwater, sand-substrate setup rather than a standard tropical community tank. Water in the 64–72 °F (64–72°F) range, near-neutral pH (roughly 7.0–7.7) and moderate hardness (up to about 12 dH) reflects its native Korean streams; heating it into tropical territory would be a mismatch for a fish adapted to temperate rivers.

A soft sand substrate is essential, both for natural sifting behaviour and for comfort — this is a burrowing fish, and coarse gravel would be a poor substitute. Dim lighting, good filtration and moderate water movement mimic the slow-flowing, sandy stretches it comes from. Like other true loaches it is scaleless and sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dose. Given the near-total absence of hobby history, this is a fish for the specialist keeper prepared to work from first principles rather than an established care sheet.

Conservation

Cobitis longicorpus has not been assessed on the global IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. Its narrow endemism — restricted to the Seomjin River system and neighbouring streams of southeastern Korea — is itself a conservation-relevant fact even without a formal category: single-river-system endemics are inherently vulnerable to local habitat change, damming, and water-quality decline.

Congeneric Korean species, including Iksookimia koreensis, have been flagged as threatened in Korean domestic research, suggesting the genus as a whole faces real pressure even where global assessments are absent. No IUCN status should be read as "secure" for this species — rather, it reflects a gap in global assessment coverage for a poorly documented regional endemic.
