Cobitis pumila, the Puan spine loach, is a small Korean endemic from the Baek River drainage in the country's southwest. It is a member of the true-loach family Cobitidae — the group that gives its name to the erectile suborbital spine found in the loaches on this site — and it is a temperate, cool-water fish, not a tropical one, living in oxygen-rich streams that run cool for much of the year. Barely 6.5 cm long, near-scaleless, and restricted to a single small drainage, it is a specialist streambed forager that has never been established as an aquarium breeding project.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis pumila was described by Kim & Lee in 1987, initially treated as a subspecies of the Korean spine loach — Cobitis koreensis pumilus — before later work recognised it as a distinct species within the genus Iksookimia, one of several genera split from the old broad concept of Cobitis as the true-loach family Cobitidae was revised. The genus Iksookimia is named for Ik-Soo Kim, the Korean ichthyologist responsible for much of the taxonomic work on the country's spine loaches, and the species remains listed there in the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid names in this family.

The type locality is the Paikchon stream at Sangso-myon, Puan-gun, in Chollabuk-do (North Jeolla Province), South Korea — the source of its common name, the Puan spine loach. It belongs to family Cobitidae, the spined and pond loaches, alongside Cobitis, Sabanejewia and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus.

This fish was long listed as Iksookimia pumila; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Cobitis, and the current combination Cobitis pumila is followed here.

Morphology

Like other Cobitidae, Cobitis pumila carries the family's diagnostic feature: an erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out for defence. Its skin is effectively naked to casual inspection, the scales being tiny and deeply embedded rather than absent — a trait shared across the family and one that matters for how the fish should be handled and medicated.

This is a genuinely small loach, reaching only about 2.6 in in total length (roughly 2.36–3.15 in standard length), among the smallest species covered here. The body is slender and elongate, typical of a substrate-hugging spine loach built for working through gravel and sand rather than cruising open water.

Sexual dimorphism is present: males have an extended first pectoral fin ray, while females are heavier-bodied and grow slightly larger — a pattern consistent with other Iksookimia and Cobitis species.

Habitat

Cobitis pumila is endemic to South Korea, known from the Baek River drainage in the southwest of the country. It lives in small, shallow rivers and streams with moderate to fast current, over a substrate of rock and gravel, in oxygen-rich water — the classic profile of a temperate Asian stream loach rather than a still-water species.

Water in its native streams runs cool to mild rather than warm: reported temperatures sit in the 68–75 °F range, squarely temperate/subtropical rather than tropical, with a neutral-to-alkaline pH around 7.0–8.0 and moderately hard water (roughly 90–268 ppm). This is an important point for anyone keeping the species — it is not a heater-and-tropical-community fish.

Feeding

In the wild, Cobitis pumila is a micropredator working the streambed, taking chironomid (midge) larvae and other small benthic invertebrates sifted from gravel and sand. Like its Cobitidae relatives it needs a soft-enough substrate and settled detritus to forage naturally rather than a bare, scoured tank floor.

In the aquarium it takes readily to sinking foods — pellets and wafers formulated for bottom feeders — supplemented with Daphnia, Artemia (brine shrimp) and bloodworm. A varied, mostly meaty diet delivered at the substrate, where this small benthic forager actually feeds, is the standard approach.

Mating

Little is documented about courtship in Cobitis pumila specifically. The species is presumed, on the pattern seen across its relatives, to be a seasonal spawner in nature, likely cued by the same spring rises in flow and temperature that trigger breeding in other temperate Cobitidae such as Cobitis and the dojo loach Misgurnus. Sexes can be told apart by the male's longer first pectoral ray and the female's stockier, larger body, but no detailed account of pairing behaviour or spawning site selection in this species has been recorded here.

Breeding

Cobitis pumila is not known to have been bred in the home aquarium. The general pattern for spined and pond loaches (Cobitidae) is egg-scattering among plants or fine substrate, typically in spring, with no parental care afterward — and several temperate members of the family, notably Cobitis, Sabanejewia and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus, have been spawned in ponds or tanks by dedicated keepers. Cobitis pumila has not been reported as one of those successes; as a narrow-range Korean stream endemic it remains, honestly, an unbred species in the hobby, and any breeding would need to replicate its cool, flowing, oxygen-rich home water rather than a standard heated community setup.

In the aquarium

This is a small, peaceful loach that should be kept in a group — a common thread across Cobitidae, most of which do better with company of their own kind — and given a soft-enough sand or fine-gravel substrate to forage in, with rock and gravel mixed in to mirror its stream habitat. Being near-scaleless, it is sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, so gentler, reduced-dose treatments are the safer approach if disease treatment is needed.

The defining care point is temperature: with a native range of roughly 68–75 °F, this is a cool, temperate-leaning fish, not a heated tropical-community species, and it should not be kept alongside fish that need warm water. It is reported as peaceful with tankmates but may take eggs or fry if housed with breeding fish, so it suits a dedicated cool-water or unheated setup with clean, well-oxygenated, moving water over a natural substrate rather than a mixed tropical community.

Conservation

Cobitis pumila has not been evaluated on the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation category; we record it as Not Evaluated rather than guess at a status. As a species restricted to a single drainage — the Baek River system of southwestern Korea — it is, by nature of that narrow range, the kind of stream endemic where local habitat pressures (water quality, flow alteration, development) would matter disproportionately even without a formal assessment.
