Taxonomy & naming
Eonemachilus yangzonghaiensis was described by Cao Wenxuan and Zhu Songquan in 1989, with a type locality of Yangzong Lake (Yangzonghai) in Yunnan Province, China — the lake the species name commemorates. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family of true loaches and one built almost entirely from small, superficially similar species distributed across streams, springs and lakes of Eurasia.
More recent phylogenetic work on the genus notes that Kottelat (2012) proposed moving E. yangzonghaiensis, along with other members of the Y. nigromaculatus species group, into the genus Eonemachilus on the basis of its terminal (rather than subterminal) mouth and its colour pattern. That reassignment has not been adopted here; this article follows the Catalog of Fishes combination and keeps the species in Yunnanilus, the genus under which it was described and is still most widely catalogued. Yunnanilus itself is concentrated in the karst regions of southwestern China, Myanmar and Vietnam, a hotspot of small, narrow-range loach species.
This fish was long listed as Yunnanilus yangzonghaiensis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Eonemachilus, and the current combination Eonemachilus yangzonghaiensis is followed here.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, E. yangzonghaiensis has the family's typical build: an elongated, cylindrical-to-slightly-compressed body, a small subterminal-to-terminal mouth, and paired barbels around the mouth used to feel and taste the substrate. FishBase records 12–14 dorsal soft rays and 8 anal soft rays for the species. Like other nemacheilids it carries an erectile suborbital spine in a groove beneath the eye and has minute, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin functionally naked — a feature that matters for disease sensitivity in any loach, though this species is not known to be kept in aquaria.
No maximum length has been published for E. yangzonghaiensis in the sources reviewed here. Congeners in the Yunnanilus nigromaculatus group, and the genus generally, run small — typically a few centimetres — and there is no reason from the available record to expect this species to differ substantially, but a specific figure cannot be given without guessing.
Habitat
The species is known from Yangzong Lake in Yunnan, a lake set within the karst topography of southwestern China's Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, and is treated as endemic to China. Congeneric Yunnanilus species from the same region are typically found in clear, cool-to-mild, flowing or lake-margin water over sand, gravel or cobble substrate — the kind of clear karst water typical of the plateau — though no site-specific temperature, pH or flow data has been published for E. yangzonghaiensis itself.
Given the total absence of published water-chemistry data for this species, no numeric range is given here beyond the general expectation, shared across the genus and the wider stone-loach family, of cool, clear, well-oxygenated fresh water rather than warm, still or blackwater conditions.
Feeding
No diet study specific to E. yangzonghaiensis has been located. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group, including other Yunnanilus species, are bottom-foraging micro-predators that pick small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates — off gravel, sand and cobble substrate, and this is the reasonable expectation for the species' natural diet, though it is not confirmed by a direct study.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for E. yangzonghaiensis. Related Yunnanilus species show breeding tubercles on males in spawning condition and, in the studied congener Y. chuanheensis, ripe adults are found over clear, slow-flowing stream stretches with sand and cobble substrate — a plausible general pattern for the genus, but not a confirmed account for this particular species.
Breeding
As with the rest of Nemacheilidae, the expected mode for Yunnanilus is egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in flowing water, with no parental care afterward. Yunnanilus species in general are only rarely spawned in captivity, in mature, densely planted or heavily furnished tanks, and there is no record of E. yangzonghaiensis having been bred or even kept in an aquarium setting. Data for this species specifically is sparse to the point of absence, and nothing here should be read as more than the genus-level pattern.
In the aquarium
Eonemachilus yangzonghaiensis is not established in the aquarium hobby and no husbandry record for it exists in the sources reviewed. Other Yunnanilus species kept by specialist loach keepers are treated as highly gregarious, needing a group of eight to ten or more, sensitive to poor water quality on import, and best suited to a mature, densely planted tank with ample hiding places and gentle-to-moderate flow — points worth noting for the genus generally, but not a substitute for actual data on this species. Anyone encountering this fish should treat it, provisionally, as a cool-to-mild, clear-water stone loach and avoid extrapolating a warm, still-water setup.
Conservation
Eonemachilus yangzonghaiensis has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. It is known only from Yangzong Lake in Yunnan, China, which — if the species is genuinely restricted to that single lake system — would make it a narrow-range endemic of the kind common throughout the karst-region Yunnanilus, several of whose congeners carry threatened IUCN categories (Critically Endangered and Vulnerable have been documented in related species). No population trend or specific threat data has been published for this species, but single-lake endemism in this region is generally associated with vulnerability to water pollution, drainage and habitat modification.
