Taxonomy & naming
Hedinichthys minuta was described in 1966 by Li Sizhen (S.-C. Li) together with T.-Y. Tai, S.-Y. Chang, K.-C. Ma, C.-W. Ho and S.-T. Kao, in a paper on a collection of fishes from North Sinkiang (Xinjiang), China. It was placed at the time in the broad genus Nemacheilus, which for decades served as a catch-all for Eurasian stone loaches before the family was progressively split.
Subsequent taxonomic work has moved this species to Hedinichthys, as Hedinichthys minutus (Li, 1966) — one of three species currently recognized in that genus, which has itself sometimes been treated as a subgenus of Triplophysa. That reflects the wider, ongoing reshuffling of Cobitoidea, where many species once lumped under Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have been redistributed into Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and related genera as the family is revised. This article keeps the species under Nemacheilus as directed, but readers researching it further should also search under Hedinichthys minutus and Triplophysa (Hedinichthys) minutus. Morphology
Hedinichthys minuta is a small loach even by the standards of its family: the holotype female measured 2.07 in standard length, with the type series ranging from 1.36–2.07 in SL. Its species epithet, minutus, was chosen specifically because it is shorter-bodied than Triplophysa stolickai, a related species it was compared against in the original description — this is a genuinely tiny stream loach, not a fish that will ever fill a display tank on size alone.
Beyond the type measurements, no aquarium-grade morphological account of coloration, fin shape or barbel pattern is available from the sources consulted here. Like other Nemacheilidae it can be expected to carry the family's typical near-scaleless, elongate, cylindrical body built for holding position on the bottom of fast water, but specific pattern detail for this species is not documented in the material reviewed and should not be guessed at.
Habitat
