Taxonomy & naming
Kapuasia falaris was described by Kottelat, Tan and Hasan in 2024, from Desa Pipitak Jaya in Tapin Regency, Barito basin, Kalimantan Selatan. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name. The genus Kapuasia is placed in Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches.
Morphology
FishBase gives a maximum of 2.5 in SL. Other morphological details and the diagnostic characters are in the original description, which the atlas has not compiled.
Habitat
The type locality is in the Barito drainage of southeastern Borneo. FishBase lists the species as freshwater and benthopelagic, known from Indonesia. Stone loaches usually live in flowing water over gravel and rock, and no habitat detail specific to this species has been published.
Feeding
The diet has not been described. Stone loaches generally pick small invertebrates from gravel and rock.
Mating
Courtship has not been described for this species.
Breeding
Spawning has not been described, in the wild or in captivity.
In the aquarium
Husbandry has not been documented for this species. Nemacheilid loaches in general do best in clean, well-oxygenated water with a gravel or sand floor, rocks for cover and a few companions of their own kind, but that is a general statement about the family.
Conservation
Kapuasia falaris has not been assessed by the IUCN. It is known only from the Barito basin of South Kalimantan, so it should be treated as a locally restricted fish with an undocumented status. Wild-collected animals in the trade should be viewed with that in mind.
