Taxonomy & naming
Lepidocephalichthys longipinnis was formally described by the Indian ichthyologist A. G. K. Menon in 1992. The original description was based on specimens from South Asia, and the name references the notably elongated pectoral fins that distinguish this form. The genus Pangio was itself long known under the name Acanthophthalmus — a combination still found in much older literature and some trade materials — until Kottelat's 1987 revision synonymised Acanthophthalmus under Pangio. Specimens that would now be assigned to Lepidocephalichthys longipinnis were therefore once labelled Acanthophthalmus longipinnis, and before that Acanthocobitis longipinnis.
Modern molecular and morphological work has raised a significant taxonomic question: the Seriously Fish database and a 2012 molecular phylogeny (Šlechtová et al.) treat Lepidocephalichthys longipinnis as a synonym of Lepidocephalichthys berdmorei (Blyth, 1860), a much older and more widespread spined loach distributed across Bangladesh, northeastern India, Myanmar, Thailand and Laos. If this synonymy is upheld by the Catalog of Fishes, the valid name becomes Lepidocephalichthys berdmorei and Lepidocephalichthys longipinnis is a junior synonym. For the purposes of this article the Menon combination is retained as the slug and search entry; keepers searching for the fish by trade name or older references will find it here regardless.
The family is Cobitidae, the true loaches, within the superfamily Cobitoidea. Lepidocephalichthys is a genus of bottom-oriented, burrowing cobitids distinct from the more familiar Pangio kuhli in body shape — stouter and more rounded in cross-section than the classic eel-like kuhli — though the ecology is broadly similar.
This fish was long listed as Pangio longipinnis; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Lepidocephalichthys, and the current combination Lepidocephalichthys longipinnis is followed here.
Morphology
Like other cobitid loaches in its range, Lepidocephalichthys longipinnis (as described) is an elongated, cylindrical fish with a subterminal mouth bearing three pairs of barbels and the characteristic erectile suborbital spine tucked in a groove beneath each eye. This spine can be flicked outward when the fish is alarmed; it catches nets and can puncture skin, so these loaches should be moved in a cup or container rather than a mesh net. The body is effectively scaleless: the scales are minute and deeply embedded, giving the skin a smooth, naked feel that has direct consequences for disease sensitivity and medication.
The feature the name was coined for — longipinnis, long-finned — is the elongated pectoral fin compared with related forms. Coloration is typically a pale yellowish-brown to tan ground with a series of darker blotches or a broken lateral stripe; the exact pattern can vary with collection locality and condition. Maximum recorded size is approximately 3.15–3.94 in standard length, with larger individuals occasionally reported in the trade, putting the fish in the range of similar cobitid loaches from the same region.
Habitat
The native range documented from collection records spans the Brahmaputra and Ganges drainages of northeastern India (including West Bengal, Assam and Manipur), Bangladesh, and the river systems of Myanmar including the Indawgyi Lake basin. If the synonymy with Lepidocephalichthys berdmorei is accepted, the range extends further into Thailand and Laos. These are lowland and foothill rivers and their tributary streams: shallow, often slow to moderately flowing waters with fine sand and silt substrates, aquatic and marginal vegetation, and abundant leaf litter. The water is typically warm, soft and slightly acidic to neutral — conditions common to the monsoon-influenced, forested drainages of this part of South and mainland Southeast Asia.
This is not a hillstream or high-flow specialist. It inhabits the calmer, shaded margins of rivers and forest streams, often burrowing into soft substrate by day and emerging to forage at night. Unlike the cool, fast-water hillstream loaches of the Balitoridae, it needs warm temperatures in the 68–77 °F range and does not require strong current or high dissolved oxygen. It is a benthic fish associated with structure — roots, leaf litter, woody debris — rather than open water.
Feeding
Lepidocephalichthys longipinnis is a micropredator that works the substrate at night, probing soft sand and leaf litter with its barbels for small invertebrates: worms, insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other benthic organisms. It is not a surface feeder and will not reliably compete for flake food that drifts in the water column. In the aquarium this means that sinking foods must be used and must be offered after lights-out, when the fish is active and able to forage without competition from diurnal species.
Suitable foods include sinking micro-pellets and wafers, frozen and live Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, and bloodworms (chironomid larvae). A varied diet keeps condition up in a fish that is easily underfed in a busy community tank simply because it eats when nobody is watching. Uneaten food should not be allowed to accumulate in the substrate; this loach is best kept in a lightly stocked tank with good filtration and regular small water changes.
Mating
Very little is documented about the reproductive biology of Lepidocephalichthys longipinnis specifically, and data for the broader Lepidocephalichthys berdmorei complex are thin. In related cobitid and small Pangio loaches, sexual dimorphism is slight and difficult to assess externally; females of similar kuhli-group species are reportedly plumper when ripe, but determining sex in a small, cryptic, nocturnal burrower outside the breeding season is unreliable. There is no useful account of courtship behaviour for this species in the available literature.
By analogy with related kuhli-group loaches and cobitids generally, spawning in nature is likely seasonal and tied to temperature and water-level changes associated with the monsoon. The fish is thought to scatter adhesive eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or floating plant roots; no detailed field account is available for this species specifically.
Breeding
Lepidocephalichthys longipinnis has not been bred in the aquarium in any documented account. It follows the general pattern of kuhli-group loaches: a seasonal egg-scatterer with no parental care that requires specific environmental triggers — changes in water depth, temperature, and chemistry associated with the monsoon — that are difficult to replicate at home. The fish in trade are wild-collected, and no farming operation for this species is known to exist.
For keepers hoping to attempt a spawn, the approach recommended for related Pangio species is a well-planted tank with fine-leaved floating plants such as Java moss or hornwort, a gradual reduction in temperature followed by a water change with slightly cooler, softer water to simulate seasonal rains, and a large group (six or more individuals) to improve the odds. Greenish adhesive eggs scattered among plant roots are reported for Pangio species generally. Fry, if produced, would be extremely small and require infusoria or similarly fine first foods. Success should not be expected; most keepers will keep this fish for its appearance and behaviour, not as a breeding project.
In the aquarium
The most important single decision in setting up for this fish is the substrate: fine, smooth sand is not optional. Lepidocephalichthys longipinnis and its cobitid relatives burrow constantly — it is how they hide, how they thermoregulate, and how they feel secure. Coarse gravel or sharp sand will abrade the delicate skin and damage the barbels over time, leading to infection and decline. A layer of fine-grade play sand or specialist aquarium sand, at least 1.2–2 in deep, is the starting point.
Like other kuhli-group loaches it does best in a small group of at least three to five individuals: kept singly it is a ghost, invisible and stressed. With companions it becomes more active, forages more openly, and shows the sociable behaviour typical of the genus. The tank should be furnished with cover — driftwood, smooth stones, terracotta tubes, dense planting — to give the fish dark retreats during the day. Lighting should be low or heavily shaded by surface plants.
Because the skin is effectively scaleless, this loach is sensitive to copper-based treatments and should never receive full-strength doses of most medications. It is frequently among the first fish in a tank to show ich (white spot disease) and can decline quickly if untreated; half-dose, copper-free or ich-specific treatments are the correct approach. Feeding must be deliberate: sinking food offered after lights-out, in a position where it reaches the bottom before other fish consume it. Temperature should be held in the range of 68–77 °F; pH 6.0–8.0 with soft to moderately hard water. A 16–21 US gal tank is adequate for a small group.
Conservation
Lepidocephalichthys longipinnis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries the status Not Evaluated. Given the taxonomic uncertainty — it may be synonymised under the more widespread Lepidocephalichthys berdmorei — a standalone assessment is unlikely in the near term. The species, or the berdmorei complex it may belong to, is distributed across lowland South and mainland Southeast Asian drainages that are subject to significant habitat pressure: deforestation, wetland conversion, sedimentation from agriculture and infrastructure, and flow modification from dams and irrigation all affect the shallow, sandy river systems these loaches inhabit.
The aquarium trade in Pangio and related small cobitids relies on wild collection, as no captive-bred supply exists for this species. Collection pressure is probably modest given the fish's limited profile in the hobby, but a clear picture of wild population status is absent. For keepers, supporting aquarists and researchers working to document the Lepidocephalichthys berdmorei complex — and choosing wild-caught fish from reputable, sustainably sourced suppliers — is the most meaningful action available.
