Taxonomy & naming
Mustura arenaria was described by Jian-Bing Lyu, Feng Lin, Thaung Naing Oo and Xiao-Yong Chen — researchers with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Kunming Institute of Zoology, and Myanmar's Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation — in a 2026 paper in Zoosystematics and Evolution (volume 102, issue 1, pages 107–117, published 12 January 2026); the Catalog of Fishes credits the species-level authorship to Lyu, Lin & Chen. The genus Mustura sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loach family, by far the largest of the loach families; Mustura itself was erected by Kottelat in 2018 for a group of loaches from northern Myanmar and related taxa.
The paper functions as more than a single species description: phylogenetic analysis combining cytochrome b and RAG1 sequence data recovers M. arenaria as an independent lineage but also shows that Mustura as currently defined is paraphyletic, and both the morphological and molecular evidence support transferring the congener Mustura shanensis to the genus Schistura. The authors state plainly that a fuller taxonomic revision of Mustura and related genera is still needed, since the genetic positions of several species conflict with their morphology-based classification — a reminder that Nemacheilidae generic boundaries across mainland Southeast Asia remain unsettled even as new species continue to be described within them. The Catalog of Fishes lists M. arenaria as valid, with a holotype (SEABRI 20164206) and paratypes (KIZ, SEABRI) plus additional non-type material, from Yaw stream, Yebya River drainage, Pakokku City, Magway Region, Myanmar, at 466 ft elevation.
Morphology
Mustura arenaria is diagnosed from its congeners by a combination of characters: 7–15 vertical lateral blotches alternating with 9–17 saddles, the blotches distinctly narrower than the pale interspaces between them and more rounded in males than in females; 8+8 branched caudal-fin rays; 8½ branched dorsal-fin rays; and a complete lateral line. Figured specimens in the description range from a 1.15 in SL male holotype to a 1.54–1.56 in SL female paratype, with other figured paratypes measuring 29.9, 34.4 and 1.4 in SL — suggesting a small fish topping out under about 1.6 in SL, with females possibly running larger than males, though the full size range of the type series was not accessible in the portion of the description consulted here.
Sexual dimorphism is well documented for this species: males carry a suborbital flap, a fleshy fold beneath the eye that is absent or much reduced in females, and males also show an expanded first branched pectoral-fin ray — both classic secondary sexual characters reported across Nemacheilidae. The body otherwise follows the family template: elongate and cylindrical, with a small, ventral, subterminal mouth suited to picking food off the streambed and reduced scaling that leaves the skin more exposed than in fully scaled fishes.
Habitat
The type locality is Yaw stream, in the Yebya River drainage near Pakokku City, Magway Region, Myanmar, at 466 ft elevation. The Catalog of Fishes records the species' broader distribution as the Chindwin–Irrawaddy River basin, including Indawgyi Lake, in central Myanmar, and lists additional non-type material beyond the formal type series — indicating the species has been documented at more than one site across this basin. One photographed habitat locality in the description is Myan Aww Stream, a tributary of the Chindwin River within Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park, Sagaing Region — a separate site from the Yaw stream type locality, illustrating a spread across several tributaries of the same basin rather than a single isolated stream.
No specific water-temperature or chemistry data for this species were accessible in the sources consulted. The species epithet arenaria, Latin for "sandy," plausibly points to a sand-influenced substrate at some part of its range, though the description's own account of that connection was not accessible here. Indawgyi Lake itself is one of Myanmar's largest lakes and a designated wildlife sanctuary and Ramsar wetland site, general regional context rather than a claim about this species' specific habitat within the lake's drainage.
Feeding

Whether M. arenaria uses these structures in that way has not been directly observed for this species — it is inference from the documented anatomy and from patterns reported in related Nemacheilidae, not a recorded behavior.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for Mustura arenaria, in the wild or in captivity. Nemacheilidae as a family are typically egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over sand or gravel in fast-flowing water with no parental care, and M. arenaria is presumed to follow this general pattern — but this is inference from the family, not direct observation.
The species has no history in the aquarium hobby, and given how recently it was described — and the taxonomic uncertainty the same paper documents surrounding Mustura as a genus — captive breeding data is unlikely to appear soon.
In the aquarium
Mustura arenaria is not an aquarium-trade species; it has no documented history in the hobby, so any care guidance is inference from its genus and family rather than tested experience. Were it ever kept, the general Nemacheilidae template would apply: cool-to-moderate, clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a sand, gravel or cobble substrate, with strong filtration to replicate a riffle habitat.
As with other Nemacheilidae, the reduced scaling typical of the family suggests sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, warranting caution with any dosing if this species were ever encountered. Given the total absence of husbandry data, restraint is the honest position: this is a fish known from a scientific type series, not one with any established care record.
Conservation
Mustura arenaria has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status beyond Not Evaluated, typical for a species described only in 2026. Unlike many newly described Nemacheilidae known from a single stream, M. arenaria's documented range spans multiple sites across the broader Chindwin–Irrawaddy basin — which, if that wider distribution holds up, may leave it somewhat less immediately exposed than a strict single-locality endemic, though this is a reasonable inference rather than a formal assessment; no population size or trend data have been published.
There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this species. As with much of Myanmar's freshwater fauna, broader threats to the Chindwin and Irrawaddy drainages — including habitat modification, water extraction and development pressure — are documented at the basin level, but no threat assessment specific to M. arenaria exists.
