Taxonomy & naming
Paracanthocobitis urophthalma was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1868. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone loaches — the largest family of loaches by species count and the group that also holds Schistura, Barbatula, Triplophysa and Oxynoemacheilus. The genus Acanthocobitis is a smaller South and Southeast Asian lineage within that family.
The species has at times been shuffled among the historically broad and messy nemacheilid genera, and older literature and some trade listings may still carry it under a different combination. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid name, and this article follows Paracanthocobitis urophthalma as recorded there. In the hobby it circulates under several common names — sand loach, banded mountain loach and ocellated loach among them — none of which is a precise translation of the scientific name.
This fish was long listed as Acanthocobitis urophthalmus; Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes places the species in Paracanthocobitis, and the current combination Paracanthocobitis urophthalma is followed here.
Morphology
This is a small, slender, cylindrical loach reaching only around 1.6 in in total length, among the more diminutive fish in this section. Like other nemacheilids it has a pointed, somewhat flattened head, small barbels around the mouth for feeling out food on the substrate, and a mottled, sandy-brown patterning broken by darker bands and blotches that gives good camouflage against pebbles and gravel — the basis for both the "banded" and "sand loach" names.
Stone loaches in this family typically carry a small erectile spine beneath the eye and very reduced, deeply embedded scales, leaving the skin close to naked; this is consistent across Nemacheilidae and worth keeping in mind for handling and medicating this genus, though it is far less prominent a feature than the large suborbital spine of the botiid loaches. Data on fine anatomical detail specific to this species is otherwise sparse, and much of what is known comes from regional survey and aquarium literature rather than a dedicated anatomical study.
Habitat
Paracanthocobitis urophthalma is endemic to a narrow stretch of southwestern Sri Lanka, recorded from the Kelani River south to the Nilwala River. It lives in shallow, flowing water — riffles and small brooks rather than steep, torrential mountain streams — over a pebble substrate, where current keeps the water well oxygenated and the bottom clear of silt.
It is a strictly freshwater, tropical-to-warm-temperate stream fish: reported temperatures in the wild and in captivity run from about 64–79 °F, and it favours soft to moderately hard water at a near-neutral pH of roughly 6.0–7.5. This is cooler, faster and clearer water than the still, warm blackwater many aquarium loaches are drawn from, and replicating that flow and oxygenation is central to keeping it well.
Feeding
This is a bottom-dwelling micro-predator, foraging over pebbles and sand for small aquatic invertebrates and detritus. Its barbels let it feel out prey items hidden among the gravel of fast-flowing riffles, a foraging style shared across the stone loaches.
In the aquarium it adapts readily to prepared foods, taking sinking pellets and wafers alongside live and frozen bloodworm and brine shrimp. As with most bottom-feeding loaches, food needs to actually reach the substrate — it is not a fish that competes well for food in the water column, so sinking foods and feeding after other tankmates have settled help it get its share.
Mating
No reliable account of sexual dimorphism or courtship behaviour for this species appears in the sources consulted; the trade and hobby literature note simply that no successful captive breeding has been documented. As in most nemacheilid stone loaches, spawning in the wild is presumed to be tied to the fast, well-oxygenated riffle water the species lives in, but there is no published description of pairing or spawning behaviour for Paracanthocobitis urophthalma specifically, and this is honestly data-sparse.
Breeding
Paracanthocobitis urophthalma is not known to have been bred in the home aquarium. Stone and brook loaches of this family typically scatter eggs over gravel in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward, and this species is presumed to follow that same pattern, but no documented spawning — captive or closely observed in the wild — has been recorded in the sources available here. Replicating the strong flow, high oxygenation and seasonal cues of its native riffles is thought to be the main obstacle, much as it is for other stream-adapted nemacheilids. The fish sold in the trade are wild-collected rather than farmed.
In the aquarium
Paracanthocobitis urophthalma is a small, peaceful, hardy loach that has long been a modest favourite for planted and community stream-style tanks, and its main requirement is faithfully recreating the shallow, fast, well-oxygenated riffle it comes from — not a warm, still tank. A gravel or pebble substrate, strong water movement, and good aeration matter more for this fish than tank size; a 23.6 in tank comfortably suits a group given adequate flow.
It is social and does best kept in a group of four to six or more, which also reduces stress and encourages natural foraging behaviour. Like other loaches with reduced scalation, it should be treated cautiously with medications and copper-based treatments, dosed conservatively rather than at full strength. It accepts a varied diet of sinking pellets, live and frozen foods, and is otherwise undemanding provided the water stays cool-to-moderate, clean and oxygen-rich. Reported captive lifespan is modest, around two to three years with good care.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Paracanthocobitis urophthalma as Endangered, in an assessment dated 7 August 2019. As a stream endemic restricted to a single river system in southwestern Sri Lanka — from the Kelani River south to the Nilwala River — it has an inherently narrow range, and the assessment cites habitat loss and degradation of that stream habitat alongside collection for the aquarium trade as pressures on the population.
Because no captive-breeding programme supplies the trade, aquarium specimens are understood to be wild-collected, which adds direct collection pressure on top of habitat threats to an already narrow-range endemic. Anyone keeping this species should treat it as a fish whose entire global population lives in a small, vulnerable stretch of Sri Lankan river.
