Taxonomy & naming
Paraschistura pakistanica was described by Mirza and Bănărescu in 1969, originally placed in the genus Noemacheilus — the broad, now largely dismantled genus that once held most of Asia's stone loaches. It was subsequently moved into Schistura as that genus was built up through the twentieth-century revision of the Nemacheilidae, and it is under that name that the species appears in FishBase and in the hobby literature.
The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority on valid fish names, currently lists the species as Paraschistura pakistanica, reflecting a further generic split carved out of Schistura for a group of Middle Eastern and South-Central Asian stream loaches. That revision has not been widely adopted outside specialist taxonomic literature, and the species is still referred to as Paraschistura pakistanica in the sources this article draws on; this article keeps that combination for consistency with the rest of the section. The type locality is Hindubaugh, in the Zhob River drainage of Pakistan, and the species belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, and one still being actively revised species by species.

Morphology
Paraschistura pakistanica is a small, slender loach reaching a maximum recorded length of about 3.2 in standard length, in keeping with the modest size typical of the genus. As a nemacheilid it has the characteristic stone-loach build: an elongated, sub-cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to holding station on the streambed, and a small, downward-facing mouth surrounded by barbels used to probe the substrate for food.
Detailed morphological description for this particular species is sparse in the available literature — much of what is documented comes from the original 1969 description and subsequent taxonomic treatments rather than a hobbyist-facing account. In common with other Schistura it very likely carries the small, erectile suborbital spine typical of the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and like other nemacheilids it is effectively scaleless or bears only tiny, deeply embedded scales, which matters for how it should be handled and medicated. Colour pattern and fine-scale diagnostic detail are not covered by the sources consulted here, and are best left unstated rather than guessed at.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Pakistan, known from the Zhob River drainage in the country's northwest — part of the Indus system that drains the mountainous borderlands toward Afghanistan. As a freshwater benthopelagic nemacheilid from this region, it fits the pattern of its relatives: a stream-dwelling fish of cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water running over stone, gravel and sand.
Detailed habitat data specific to P. pakistanica — exact temperature range, substrate composition, seasonal flow variation — has not been located in the available literature, and it should not be assumed to mirror lowland tropical conditions. What can be said with confidence, from its family and its montane Zhob River origin, is that this is a fast-water, well-oxygenated stream fish rather than a warm, still, blackwater species.
Feeding
Nemacheilid stone loaches are, as a rule, bottom-foraging micro-predators, working over gravel and stone in current to take small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other benthic prey — using their barbelled snouts to probe crevices between substrate particles. Mating

Like most Schistura, it is essentially unknown in the hobby, and any keeper attempting to breed it would be working from the general nemacheilid pattern rather than from any species-specific account. Paraschistura pakistanica is not established in the aquarium hobby, and no husbandry account for the species specific to captive care was found. Its modest size — a maximum of roughly 3.2 in — and its status as a fast-water nemacheilid suggest that, were it to be kept, it would need the same conditions its relatives require: cool-to-moderate, clear, strongly oxygenated, flowing water over a stone or gravel substrate, rather than a warm, still community tank.
A general caution applies to nemacheilid and other loaches as a group: their near-scaleless skin makes them unusually sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength treatments, so any fish of this type should be dosed cautiously and watched closely for early signs of disease such as ich. Because this species is a narrow-range Pakistani endemic with no documented trade history, it should not be assumed to be available, and any specimen encountered would warrant particular care given how little is recorded about its needs.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Paraschistura pakistanica as Vulnerable, an assessment recorded via FishBase as dated 27 February 2020. FishBase further characterises the species as having medium population resilience (estimated doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years) and low vulnerability to fishing pressure, but a Vulnerable rating for a single-country endemic known from a specific river drainage points to a genuinely restricted range as the underlying concern.
As an endemic of the Zhob River drainage in Pakistan, the species' fortunes are tied to the health of that one system — water extraction, pollution, damming and habitat alteration in the wider Indus basin are the general pressures facing small-range South Asian stream fish, though no source consulted here documents a specific threat assessment narrative for this species beyond its Red List category. There is no evidence of an aquarium trade in this species; its conservation concerns, such as they are recorded, are about habitat rather than collection.
