Physoschistura mango is a tiny stone loach described by Conway and Kottelat in 2023 from a pool near Hopong in Shan State, Myanmar. FishBase gives a maximum of only 0.5 in SL. It was collected at about 3,412 ft elevation on the Shan plateau.

Taxonomy & naming

Physoschistura mango was described by Conway and Kottelat in 2023. The type locality is a pool at the foot of a hill near Hopong, about 19 mi east of Taunggyi, Shan State. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name. The genus is in Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches.

Morphology

FishBase gives a maximum of 0.5 in SL, which makes it a very small loach. Colour pattern is described in the original description, which the atlas has not compiled.

Habitat

The type locality is a pool at the foot of a hill at about 3,412 ft on the Shan plateau. FishBase lists the species as freshwater and demersal, known from Myanmar. Broader habitat and range data have not been published.

Feeding

The diet has not been described. Stone loaches generally pick small invertebrates from gravel and rock.

Mating

Courtship has not been described for this species.

Breeding

Spawning has not been described, in the wild or in captivity.

In the aquarium

Husbandry has not been documented. A highland nemacheilid of this kind would be expected to prefer clean, well-oxygenated water and moderate temperatures, and its very small size calls for small, peaceful tankmates.

Conservation

Physoschistura mango has not been assessed by the IUCN. It is known only from the Shan plateau of Myanmar, so it should be treated as a locally restricted fish with an undocumented status. Wild-collected animals in the trade should be viewed with that in mind.
