Taxonomy & naming
Rhyacoschistura manipurensis was described by the Indian zoologist Bhaduri Lal Chaudhuri in 1912, hence the parenthetical authority. Chaudhuri's original description placed the species in an older catch-all genus for South and Southeast Asian stream loaches — a common pattern for this period, when what is now recognised as Schistura, Nemacheilus and Triplophysa were not yet clearly separated. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid names, currently lists it as Rhyacoschistura manipurensis in the family Nemacheilidae, and no valid combination change is documented for it here.
Schistura is by far the largest genus of true loaches, with several hundred described species spread across South, Southeast and East Asia, and new species are still routinely described from poorly surveyed hill streams. R. manipurensis belongs to a regional cluster of Schistura endemic to the Manipur Valley and its surrounding hills, an area that has produced many range-restricted stone loaches known from only one or a few drainages.
