Schistura scitula is a small hillstream loach described in 2026 by Maurice Kottelat from headwater creeks of the Nam Gnouang, a branch of the Nam Kading in central Laos that ultimately drains to the Mekong. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loach family, in the sprawling genus Schistura, which supplies most of Southeast Asia's small, boldly patterned hillstream loaches. It stands out among Mekong-drainage Schistura for a dorsal fin set unusually far back on the body and an irregular, almost mesh-like pattern of 13–18 body bars — striking enough that Kottelat named it scitulus, Latin for handsome or elegant.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura scitula was described in 2026 by Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in the Revue Suisse de Zoologie, from material collected in 2018 from small forest streams in the headwaters of the Nam Gnouang, a major branch of the Nam Kading in Bolikhamsai Province, central Laos — part of the Mekong drainage. The area had gone unsurveyed for Schistura before this brief expedition, despite reasonably thorough earlier work on the lower Nam Gnouang and neighboring Nam Theun in connection with the Nam Theun 2 hydropower project.

It sits in Schistura s.l. ("sensu lato"), the largest genus of Nemacheilidae with roughly 240 valid species concentrated in Southeast Asia. Kottelat is explicit in the description that Schistura as currently defined is not a natural, monophyletic group — recent molecular work on the whole family found the roughly 90 sampled Schistura species did not form a single lineage — so all species, including this one, are retained under the name pending a full generic revision still in progress.

Morphology

Schistura scitula is a small, elongate loach, with the largest recorded specimen (a paratype) reaching 2.04 in standard length; the holotype measures 1.96 in SL. Body depth increases gradually toward the dorsal-fin origin and stays roughly uniform from there to the caudal-fin base; the head is depressed with a flat interorbital area, and the snout is pointed with a blunt tip. There is no dorsal or ventral adipose crest or keel on the caudal peduncle, unlike the cave-adapted Troglonectes of southern China.

The fin formula is diagnostic: 4 unbranched plus 7½–8½ branched dorsal rays (origin set unusually far back, above pelvic-fin rays 2–7, a key character separating this species from most Mekong-drainage Schistura), 8–9 branched pectoral rays, 6–7 branched pelvic rays, 5½ branched anal rays, and 9+8 branched caudal rays with an emarginate (shallowly notched) fin. The lateral line is complete, running 80–97 pores along the body, which is fully scaled except on the anterior predorsal area and belly in the smallest specimens. The lower jaw carries a deep median notch, and the mouth is markedly arched — in the largest specimens the cheeks become swollen and the gape widens further, a size-related change rather than a fixed sex difference. Coloration in preserved specimens is pale yellowish-brown with 13–18 narrow, irregularly shaped and irregularly spaced dark bars; anteriorly the bars tend to fuse into an indistinct blotch, while further back some bars meet their opposite-side partner across the dorsal midline. In the predorsal area the bars do not meet across the midline but connect at their upper ends with neighboring bars, forming stripes, chains or a mesh-like pattern that often leaves a pale mid-dorsal band — a color pattern the original description calls unique among Mekong-drainage Schistura. A broad, regular black bar crosses the caudal-fin base without reaching the dorsal or ventral midline, separated from the last body bar by a pale gap; some specimens show an orange-to-red blotch on the base of the upper caudal-fin rays. No sexual dimorphism was observed — males lack the suborbital flap, modified pectoral rays, or breeding tubercles seen in some other Schistura, and only ripe females appear visibly deeper-bodied from egg development.

Habitat

Schistura scitula is known only from the immediate area of its type locality: the Nam Nong (also spelled Nam Heung), an upper tributary of the Nam Gnouang, part of the Nam Kading watershed that drains to the Mekong, in Bolikhamsai Province, central Laos, at an elevation of roughly 1775–1952 ft. The largest sample came from a small forest creek flowing over a stone bottom at 3.9–11.8 in depth; a second sample came from an even shallower, 2–3.9 in forest creek, and a single specimen was taken from a larger stream nearby.

All of this points to a small, shallow, forested headwater-stream specialist rather than a fish of larger rivers. The species had not turned up in earlier surveys of the lower Nam Gnouang between 1996 and 2002, suggesting it may be restricted to these upper headwater tributaries specifically rather than being simply overlooked lower down the system.

Feeding

The original description reports on the stomach contents of one dissected female (1.76 in SL): remains of insect larvae roughly 0.12 in long. This single data point is consistent with the standard diet documented across Schistura and Nemacheilidae generally — a benthic micro-predator picking small invertebrates, chiefly aquatic insect larvae, from the stream bed of clear, fast-flowing water.

No aquarium feeding data exists for this recently described species. Were it ever kept, small sinking live or frozen invertebrate foods, delivered near the substrate, would suit it far better than surface-feeding flake, in keeping with its wild diet and its bottom-oriented body plan.

Mating

The one dissected female (CMK 27781, 1.76 in SL) carried ovaries with eggs at various stages of development, the largest about 0.06–0.07 in in diameter — evidence that the population sampled in March 2018 included fish approaching spawning condition, but no courtship or spawning event was actually observed. The original description notes no sexual dimorphism: no suborbital flap, no modified or tuberculate pectoral-fin rays in males, with only body depth in ripe, egg-laden females offering any external clue to sex.

Based on the wider pattern documented across Nemacheilidae, courtship in this species, if any exists beyond loose aggregation over suitable substrate, is presumed to be minimal — but this is inference from the family rather than an observation of S. scitula itself.

Breeding

Breeding has not been documented for Schistura scitula, in the wild or in captivity. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches as a group are typically egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel and stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care, and S. scitula is presumed to follow this pattern based on family biology and on the ripe ova recorded in one dissected female — but this has not actually been observed or recorded as a spawning event.

The species has never been kept or bred in the aquarium hobby; as a fish described from a handful of specimens taken from remote central-Laos headwater creeks, it has no history in the trade at all.

In the aquarium

Schistura scitula is not an aquarium fish — it has no history in the hobby and was described too recently, from too small and remote a range, to have entered the trade. Any care guidance has to be extrapolated cautiously from its genus and family rather than from direct experience with this species.

Were it ever kept, its documented habitat — small, shallow, forested headwater creeks running over stone at 1775–1952 ft elevation — points toward cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated water with strong flow and a stone or gravel substrate, in keeping with hillstream Schistura generally. As a scaled but still fine-skinned nemacheilid, it would warrant the same caution around copper and full-strength medications that applies broadly across the loach family. All of this is inference from habitat and genus, not documented fact for this species.

Conservation

Schistura scitula has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; as a species described only in 2026 from a handful of specimens at a single small area of headwater creeks, it has simply not yet been assessed, and should be treated as data-deficient in practice.

The type locality lies within the Nam Chouane – Nam Xang Biodiversity Offset Site, an area set aside in connection with the Nam Ngiep 1 hydropower project, which suggests at least some habitat protection is already in place. More broadly, small-range Mekong-basin headwater endemics like this one face pressures from forest clearance, stream sedimentation, and hydropower development across Laos's uplands, but no population trend or threat data specific to this species exists. There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this fish.
